Carrier is an analytic philosopher who knows a lot about art history. This book takes on a variety of ways of forming aesthetic arguments, which are necessarily subjective, and uses comparisons between various art historical texts to evaluate a range of approaches to speaking about and historicizing art (mostly paintings). Dense, good-natured, illuminating, and mercifully quick although I've already forgotten all major details a week later. Definitely something I will refer back to, though.
