The oceans cover everything, the apocalypse is behind them. Before them is just water, leveling. And in the middle — they find each other.

On a desolate, military-run Outpost, Beckett has volunteered to wait for groups of nomadic paddleboarders, to order them to paddle east to the settlements, or else.

His job is noble, but also lonely, and he’s worried, because the water keeps rising, and the building he’s living on could crumble into the sea at any moment.

Then Luna bumps her paddleboard up to the glass windows of his outpost and disrupts everything. She’s alone, seeking shelter and food, and seems open, hopeful, and happy to be alive.

And soon Beckett has something and someone to live for.

But maybe everything about her is not as it seems.

Because Luna is traveling under a fake name, hiding something deep. Because a nomadic paddleboarder without a family is a disaster. And Luna can't tell him about it, because some words are too painful to speak out loud.

Can Beckett see to the depths of her mystery before it’s too late?

I thought the set up was pretty interesting. There was very little world building, the story just hits the ground running with Luna and Beckett meeting at an outpost. The world has been flooded for at least a few decades. Later in the book, we do learn more about the society. Its similar to our current society, nothing crazy like in other dystopian books.

The tone of the story was pretty light, given that it is a post-apoc story. There was spice in it but the spice was not explicit. I was surprised at how immature or YA most of the characters sounded. I almost thought that this was a YA book. The cover and the blurb were definitely darker in tone that the actual story. It is on the shorter side with very short chapters, so it reads very quickly.

Overall, not my favorite in this genre but I will still continue with the series. Beckett and Luna had several sweet and funny moments together. I am also curious to know about Luna's story.

Genuine and Beautiful **NO SPOILERS**

It’s also a little bit terrifying too, imagining our world being drowned. It took a little bit of reading between the lines to work out what was going on.

It does seem far fetched, not the drowned earth scenario but more the actual water nomadic lifestyle… on paddle boards of all things. You would need to be adept at reading weather patterns because trying to survive storms and more on boards sounds impossible. As does living partially submerged wearing normal clothing. The human body might be waterproof to a degree but anyone who’s had an extra long bath knows that skin is affected by submersion. Likewise standard clothing would rot and fall apart. So I decided to go down the “suspension of disbelief” route and ignore the realities of that kind of life and instead focus on the human angle.

It’s definitely worth focusing on too, a story that unfolds hundreds of times a day. Opposites do attract and instant chemistry is a thing. Given his career (or possibly just his employment?) if anything happens between them it won’t be smooth sailing (pun unintended). That said as you get to know the characters you start rooting for them and wanting it to work out for them. Humanity is a destructive but adaptive species, here’s hoping we don’t kill the planet. Now I’m moving straight into book 2.

I absolutely love this story! Luna is alone and scared, yet she's so brave and good and kind. Beckett is afraid too, for different reasons, but he becomes the hero in spectacular fashion! I loved the ending! I'm so looking forward to the next book to find out if she makes it back to the settlement and they officially become a "we".

Another excellent series by Ms. Knightley

I cant wait for book 2. My all time favorite series is Ms. Knightley's Kailyn and the Highlander so I figured I should give this one a try while waiting for her newest book to come out.
It's short and sweet but I see from the comedy in the last 2 chapters that I'm going to love the next one as well.
Enjoy!!

Not the usual book I choose to read, but I did enjoy it. I had to find out the outcome. Was reading all night, took a nap, then finished. I highly recommend if you like unusual stories. It's a clean read with one love scene exception.

A lovely story.

The backdrop is epic, the sea rising and not stopping, what a strange dystopian future. The characters are likeable and it's lovely seeing how Beckett grows as a person in particular. A good read and I will be downloading the next one now.

Interesting take

I hesitated to start this book because I generally avoid books that don’t have a clear completion. I knew going in this was going to be a read the entire series type of book. This first installment didn’t disappoint.

Epic romance of 2 people whom want different things. Luna has a past yet revealed and Beckett is all about saving lives. I hope they can find what they’re looking for in the future.

Ok

Not much to it. I finished it, but it was hard. Vague in parts and no depth. Not a great story.

Confusing

Where are they ? Where is the outpost. ? Why is everything underwater ? There are no explanations. Doubtful I'll read anymore of this series.

This reads more like a young adult story. Hoping there's a little more depth in the next two books. Love the Highlander series!! On to book 2!

Such a sweet and unique story! I would love to watch it as a movie. Lots of symbolism in the lyrical writing style.

This reminds me a little bit like Waterworld. The setting, not the story. Can’t wait to see what happens with Luna and Beckett.

I wasn’t sure I was going to like this series. So after I read this, I picked up a different book. However, I couldn’t get this series out of my mind and rushed through the book I was reading so I could get back to this series.
Even though this book started a little slow, it definitely left me wanting more. I finished the series and lived it!
