The Soul at Rest: A 40-Day Journey into a Life of Prayer

Rate this book
Many Christians today struggle with having a consistent or life-giving quiet time. They are looking for a form of prayer that doesn’t make them feel like they’re begging God or being judged by him. The Soul at Rest is a quiet time companion that introduces “inward disciplines” from throughout Christian history to those who hunger for greater intimacy with God.

The Soul at Rest is a 40-day guided experience of prayer that puts readers in the presence of God and allows them to enter and enjoy his rest. It guides readers into a rhythm of quiet, contemplative prayer, easing them into God’s presence and demonstrating how prayer is not so much a duty as it is a gift. By the time someone finishes The Soul at Rest , they’ll not only understand prayer better; they’ll be engaging in it as a regular rhythm of life.

In "The Soul at Rest", Tricia McCary Rhodes shows us how to fall in love with Jesus. Each day of the 40-day journey builds on the day before until we have a journal full of time spent with God.  She encourages us to continue the journey on our own by using the tips in her book.

Each chapter covers five days which includes a bit of wisdom and a "Practicing Prayer" section devoted to leading you into your own prayer time.  "The Soul at Rest" can be read alone or as part of a small group and can take 10 weeks or as many as you need.  Chapters include meditative prayer, conversational prayer, praying in the darkness and praying without words.  They each help you develop and intimate prayer time with the Father.

I highly recommend this book whether you are trying to develop your own prayer time or if you are already experiencing time with God.  Rhodes has many ideas to keep your prayer time exciting and passionate.

Prayer is something I've struggled with my entire Christian walk, and I am always looking for a good resource to help me on my journey. I think I found the perfect resource for prayer in The Soul at Rest by Tricia McCary Rhodes. Set as a guidebook, The Soul at Rest leads you, day by day, chapter by chapter, a treasure trove of information, guiding you to further study and meditation which absolutely inspired and empowered me.

Each chapter is marked by days that are 3-4 pages long, which is easy to keep a daily reading light, but you are encouraged to go at your own pace, which takes the pressure off of having to keep a schedule, and you are able to really study and meditate to really drive that days lesson home.

Wonderfully written, The Soul at Rest makes you crave a more intimate relationship with the Lord. This resource can be used for personal study or in a small group setting, with a discussion guide at the back, which is perfect for a small group to go through the study together. An incredible study on prayer, The Soul at Rest is a resource and study everyone should own and study.

This book could not have come at a better time...dealing with the stress and busyness of everyday life, reeling from the unexpected and tragic death of dear friends, difficulty in several close relationships, and more. With this book as a guide, I was able to press pause on the emotions swirling within and allow the sweet presence of Jesus to give me true peace and rest within my heart, mind, and spirit. Tricia's writing is honest, authentic, and hope-filled. She writes from personal experience and has a deep desire for others to taste and see the powerful presence of the Lord. This is a book I will go back to again and again because being in the presence of Jesus is what I so desperately want (and need!) each and every day! In summary, THIS BOOK HAS CHANGED MY LIFE! Get yourself a copy ASAP!

In this revised & updated version of an earlier release, Tricia McCary Rhodes invites readers to pause the chaos of everyday life and practice the discipline of prayer on a more personal, more intimate level. Calling it a ‘pilgrimage of the soul’, she provides a practical and spiritually-focused guide to hone one’s prayer life with the ultimate goal of greater fellowship with God and a soul at rest. Chapters are divided into ‘days’, and each day features a section called ‘Practicing Prayer’ which encourages readers to prepare their hearts and ‘press in’ closer to God. The author writes authentically, sharing her own individual experience and wisdom while also remaining zeroed in on God’s wisdom with solid Scripture. Asking readers to adopt the journey as their own, the questions are designed for soul-level contemplation and growth. A great resource for personal Bible study and/or small groups.
