The heroine meets the hero when she asks him for a ride to her fiancé’s ranch. He turns out to be her fiancé’s neighbor—and enemy. At first, he’s reluctant to help, but eventually gives in after her attempts to travel on her own fail. The setup felt promising, and I expected an exciting buildup. Unfortunately, the story quickly goes in the wrong direction. The heroine actually marries her fiancé, who is old, on his deathbed, and already has a daughter. Predictably, he dies soon after the wedding, leaving all control of his property to the heroine.
For me, a book needs a chasing hero who wants the heroine from first meet. That simply doesn’t happen here. Instead, what really irritated me was that the heroine goes to him and asks —the same man who insulted her just two days earlier—to help her run the ranch, by offering him access to her land water in return (something like that as I forgot). It comes across as desperate and undermines her character as well. At that point, I lost all interest. The dynamic no longer mattered to me, and I didn’t feel any motivation to keep reading.
