Rate this book

This beautifully illustrated photographic field guide is the first to focus on the identification of the fascinating, diverse and unique wildlife of Madeira and the Canary Islands--featuring the birds, mammals, reptiles, amphibians, butterflies and dragonflies that are most likely to be seen. Richly illustrated introductory sections cover the key wildlife sites to visit on each of the islands and provide an overview of the islands' geography, climate, habitat types and current conservation efforts. Stunning colour photographs highlight the key identification features of each species, and the accompanying text covers status, habitat preference, behaviour and, where appropriate, calls. The guide also features an up-to-date distribution map for each species. Complete with an attractive, user-friendly design, this is a must-have guide for all visitors to these magical islands.

I've misplaced all my Macaronesia field guides so decided to get a copy of this ahead of a trip to Porto Santo in a couple of weeks. It's a polished field guide and if you are ok with photographic field guides as opposed to illustrations there's really not a lot to dislike.

From a birder's perspective featuring all the species that are likely to be seen is sound. There isn't as far as I know any equivalent field guide for Madeira. The Helm Field Guide to 'Birds Of The Canary Islands' by Eduardo Garcia might better suit visitors to the Canaries who like artist drawn images; for those also planning to visit the Azores and Cape Verdes could opt for 'Birds Of The Atlantic Islands' which is dates but uses the same artwork.

If you are going to either archipelago and want one guide covering all the main fauna groups you are likely to want to identify this covers all the bases.
