Dark Fantasy series, Book #2. Red Riding Hood, grandma, and the big bad wolf? Think again! This book is stunning!
Raina's biggest sin? Being born to a mother, who defied her mother, a village elder with an insatiable thirst for power. When Raina's mother dies in childbirth, it's her grandmother, Hildegarde who takes Raina in. Kindness? Oh, no. Hildegarde hates her granddaughter, making Raina's life a living hell. Being the only redhead in the village isolates her even more, and she soon becomes Red. The machinations and deeply held secrets held by the village elders are cloaked in centuries of myth. As head of the elders, Hildegarde has her own agenda. No tradition is more steeped in mystery than the darkness that nearly destroyed the village centuries ago. Five volunteers saved the village from the evil threatening their existence. But at what cost? Those men may have been volunteers but had no clue what lay ahead. Cursed by magic, betrayed by the elders, the five men were banished for eternity. But even that wasn't enough. Every century, when the blood moon arises, a sacrifice must be made to the cursed men, now enchanted wolves. Without the sacrifice, the protection disappears. The sacrifices have always been men, banished and never seen again. Why then is Red the first woman ever been chosen? But going against centuries of tradition is unthinkable. As she's carefully prepared, then thrust into the darkness beyond the village walls, she comes face to face with the wolves. But...wait. These aren't wolves. They're brutish, hulking, and huge, but they're definitely men. What? As first betrayal, then outright terror, overtake Red, she soon learns nothing's as it should be. Oh, the curse is very real. But nothing else seems to be. As Red's forced to submit to these rough men, she learns there's so much more to them, and herself, than she could ever have imagined. But with her new life come rules...and consequences. As she bows to the inevitable, can there be any acceptance of this new life? Then the unthinkable happens. Her control is ripped even further from her, shattering her world again. Forced to return to the village, will they accept her? No one's ever returned before. One thing is certain. Her duplicitous grandmother will NOT be happy! Has Red just gone from the frying pan into the fire? There are no answers, only question after question. And the biggest question of all is what will Red have to sacrifice? It's not just her life in jeopardy. Is she really willing to pay the ultimate price?
Zoe Blake and Alta Hensley have again struck gold! This is no Disney fairytale. It's not even the gruesome story created by the Brothers Grimm. It's so much more, and I adored it. For me, the hook that pulled me into this story is the juxtaposition of this story versus the familiar Disney and Brothers Grimm fairy tales. Red's a total innocent. Despite that, she's incredibly defiant, resilient, sexy, and even wanton. Surprise doesn't begin to describe my reaction to Red. She's desperate to escape what seems her inevitable fate, but in the process learns unimaginable things about herself that she couldn't have believed possible. Zoe Blake and Alta Hensley could have made Red a mere caricature of a classic fairy tale heroine. Instead, they've created an incredibly powerful woman with the ability to stand up to every challenge thrown at her and more. And the men? Grimm, Beo, Canis, Helm, and Rood turn this story upside down and inside out. Demanding, dominating, alone for centuries, they truly are brutes. Red is the first woman they've seen in centuries. Their animal natures may control them. But there are so many subtleties and variations in these men. Red isn't the only one who learns exactly who and what she is. I absolutely loved this story! Is this dark? Yes! Hot and steamy? In every way! And, again, Ms. Blake and Ms. Hensley weave moments of humor that bring light and hope into the story. Zoe Blake and Alta Hensley have done it again! Congratulations Ms. Blake and Ms. Hensley! This book deserves nothing less than five stars! I loved it!
A final note. Be an informed reader! This is an ADULT book. It contains explicit language, dark themes, and dubious/nonconsensual sexual scenes. If you don't enjoy this genre, this may not be the book for you. There are book synopses and reviews available on Goodreads and Amazon. Use these resources. DON'T LEAVE A NEGATIVE REVIEW WHEN YOU KNOW YOU WON'T ENJOY THE BOOK. It's not fair to the authors. They work hard to provide a quality work product. If you know you'll object to a book's subject matter before you buy it, you're doing yourself and the authors an extreme disservice.
Thanks for reading my review and happy reading!
