War Adams

Rate this book
United States Marshal War Adams stared at the telegram in disbelief. His father had been murdered? As difficult as it was to come to grips with the news, it would become more disturbing when he discovered that the person arrested for the crime was the nurse that his father had hired to ease his suffering from his killing disease. Her position gave her both the means and opportunity to commit the crime and he knew that the nurse was the same woman whose husband he had shot and killed years earlier, giving her the motive.

Most biographies start with birth and then roll through the years as they drift by but that would bore me to death, and I lived through it.

The interesting part of my life began on September 23rd, 1995 as we were driving back to Omaha after watching the Notre Dame - Texas game in South Bend with relatives. The #21 Irish beat the #13 ranked Longhorns 55-27; and in a real oddity, scored points in just about every way conceivable in the game of football. They scored touchdowns on passes and runs, kicked a field goal, intercepted a pass for a TD, returned a punt for a touchdown and even added two points for blocking a Texas extra point.

As we were driving along westbound I-80 somewhere in Illinois in our Jeep Cherokee, I absent-mindedly rubbed the left side of my neck under my chin.

My very astute wife asked, "What's wrong with your neck?"

Now I had been an Air Force medic for twelve years; and as evident in my descriptions of outlaws' agonizing deaths in my stories, have a good working knowledge of anatomy and physiology. But that knowledge is offset by being a guy and thinking that we all live forever. My neck lymph nodes had been enlarged for around three months when my wife asked that question.

I obfuscated as if I was a lawyer and replied, "Um, a few weeks or so." (Note: Twelve or thirteen weeks does qualify as a 'few' weeks if one chooses to be generous.)

"And what did the doctor say?"

"I'll ask him when we get back."

"Yes, you will."

I do not want to make my wife out to be a harpy or a nag, because she is neither. She's an incredibly patient woman who could only put up with so much stupidity by yours truly.

Three days later, after the doctor copped a quick feel of my lymph nodes, he said, "I don't know what it is, but I don't like it," which was an honest, albeit an imprecise diagnosis.

So, we trotted over to a local ENT specialist. She didn't like them either and took me into surgery a few days later where she yanked one out, so the lab could dice it and slice it, then look at it under a microscope.

The pathologist who looked at the cells through his microscope reported his findings as 'lymphoepithelioma'. That meant that it was a secondary tumor and there was a primary tumor somewhere else in my nasopharynx that was the original problem.

Back I went into the operating room where the ENT doctor did an extensive examination and found nothing. She was so sure of her reconnaissance of the back of my throat that she told me that the pathologist was wrong, and it was just a lymphoma.

Now, being a computer geek, even way back in the dark ages of the internet in '95, I did some searching and found that if the primary tumor wasn't found, then the survival rate plummeted to about a fifth of the already lousy survival rate for the advanced Stage IV cancer. My wife and I decided that a second opinion might be a good idea.

Off we went in her Jeep to the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota as the lousy weather descended across the Midwest. It's been known to happen, you know.

They had a problem getting the doctor here to release the specimen she'd yanked out of my neck, which I thought was odd because I don't remember selling it and figured I still owned it. Anyway, they eventually got the lymph node, did their own peek and confirmed the pathologist's diagnosis.

It wasn't until Halloween in 1995 that they finally found the original little bugger. It was just a tiny bump in the back of my throat that must have been there for a long time before it sent its friends marching into my lymph nodes.

They wanted to treat the cancer there, but I opted to have it done in Omaha and was sent to the care of Doctor Patrick J. McKenna (a name you may recognize from Max). Doctor Mac was the perfect man for the job as he was very personable, optimistic, had a good sense of humor and wouldn't put up with my constant whining. It helped that he knew his job, too.

I knew this wasn’t my genre, but it was in my reading queue, so I gave it a shot. I found the writing stilted and tedious and the plot skimpy. I abandoned it 20% in.

I have been a long time reader, and fan, of C. J. Petit, enjoying numerous successful stories over the past fifteen months. This is one of his better attempts. I was hooked from page one and it on gets better with each and every episode.

What can I say? Five stars and more! A very exciting and impressive novel of romance, mystery and plenty of good versus bad. I was not prepared for the ending tho, but we cannot win them all.

You cannot find a better storyline or group of special characters in any novel. There was enough of heartwarming episodes to pacify the in depth reader to their fullest desires. I was touched throughout the entire novel by the author's unique ability in meeting my every desire.

I recommend this novel tenfold, if you are a serious lover of love, true acceptable romance and the excitement of family loving family episodes. Please, do yourself a favor and read this novel, as it is unsurpassed, with it's wonderful heartwarming adventures through the real old western adventures.

Enjoyed this tale with plenty of action, drama, and troubleshooting, sometimes literally. We discover some perverted characters in here that give a healthy person pause of not the creeps, but we must remember the realities that women in all corners of the world are victims of abuse, perpetrated by men, who in too many ways, are allowed to evolve into self-serving empathy-less bullies from their childhood. Hey, we even see them in political leadership! Many of these incidents are a stiff reminder to parents just how delicate the child-rearing task is and must be taken seriously. The healing stages here took on some interesting Freudian characteristics, as well as some 12-step recovery processes addicts must endure on the path to renewal. Thank you CJ Petit for your creativity and dedication to nurturing the human experience while exposing its many faults. PKB

Addie was in jail accused of murdering Warren Adams father Arthur which she didn't do

Warren got the telegram about his father's death at his Marshall's office as he was going to go visit anyway he decided to go investigate so he sent a telegram to the prosecutor to hold everything until he got there to investigate. It was a good thing he did otherwise Addie would have been hung. On his way to the ranch Warren someone tried to shoot him and knocked off his hat and Warren turned and went after him and tried to catch up to the shooter but noticed it was a big man heavy man with big feet. So someone at the double a ranch didn't want him alive. That added to the mystery.

This is a great book. It has everything a western should have. Bad villains, gread heroes, and no profanity or vulgarity. It's a book about true love the way it should be. I have read a whole bunch of westerns and this is one of the best. I highly recommend the book where the true values are, honor, honesty, and keeping virtuous. I really wish so many books I've started and quit reading because of profanity and/or sex so much blood is treated like the norm.

Another good story

As with the previous books I've read by Mr. Petit, he continues to come up with intriguing plots for his stories and I'll keep on reading them. Unfortunately, as in previous reviews, poor or no proofreading continues to be an irritant and lowers my ratings.
Example: the 2 50-110 caliber rifles War buys are Sharps-Borschardts, NOT Borshadts. A simple Google search would have caught this error

When it's Right, Its Right. Great Story.

I read many of the reviews of C.J. Petit books, and I agree there are type errors, but if that keeps anyone from reading then you are truly missing out on a Great read. The stories are western, with romance, good verses bad. The books always entertain. Keep writing Mr. Petit, I am excited to read another and I know I won't be disappointed.

poison your husband doesn’t pay

Us Marshal War Adams discovers his father has been murdered by a telegram from a foreman. Timing doesn’t match. A pretty young nurse has been blamed and held in jail. Darn it —War is one day late and she is raped by a bad deputy who works for a good sheriff who is afraid of his deputies—not good. A new combination- evil stepmother and evil sister-in-law combined into one. I wish men could stand up to beauty and big boobs better!

A Montana Western/A US Marshall/Women/Marriage and Children

CJP has penned another easy to read western with a cast of characters that seem to be right out of 1950's early 1960 western. There are numerous plots that are tied together at the right time, especially a trip to Yellowstone National Park. This is an excellent read for the genre.....ER

Good story line!

I've read all his books and never disappointed. However, I felt this one could have ended without the last chapters as it tied up all the characters lives in a neat package. To me, this wasn't necessary. That's why 4 instead of 5 stars. I do look forward to his next book!

Great story

The only reason that I am not giving this book a five star rating is because of the errors. I hate to be reading along and there is a word missing or a name in the wrong place. You seriously need to get a new proofreader! The story plot was great like your books but the errors. Fought it down.

The formula works

War Adams is the epitome of a CJPetit main character. As always, he has our admiration. He certainly has our envy. No author of westerns, and few authors in any other genre, develope the depth of characterization that Petit does. When you put down the book you feel that you know the people and the region like a neighbor. As slways, a good read.

Good, but just that.

My biggest problem with this, and all other books by this author, is that of continuity. There are too many times when the name of a character is mixed up with that of another. There are also many sentences which are so mixed in structure as to meaningless. All of these interrupt the even flow of reading.

War Adams

You write the most loving stories. I sure hope the ladies of today find their right as the ladies did in yesteryear. Your pardner or spouse must be something
Mine was I just didn't appreciate it for many years. But I had him for 55 years. He would have made a good War. Only a little shorter. Bless you and yours.

Yep,read another one

I have read almost every western he has written. I have not once been disappointed. This one was even a little more exceptional. My problem with it is I'm finished and now have to find one I haven't read. The gun fights are good. The emotional impact on life are well treated and handled with expertise. Good job. When it's right, it's right. C.J. Petit.

Another great read by C. J. Petit

This was a great storyline for this book. The characters came to life and literally jumped off the page as the words I read ran through my mind. It felt like I was there in the background as each twist and turn of the story unfolded. I really enjoyed this one. Hope you do as well!!!

One of Petit's best

The action in this story is more than enough to satisfy any reader. What makes the entire tale so absorbing is the depth of the characters both pro and antagonists. You'll fall in love with War and Addie and hate the villains equally. A must read.

Continuing

Interesting story, excellent depictions of male and female miscreants. I had a few questions about what the numerous hands were doing out messing with three herds of cattle all visible from the main ranch. But it didn't hurt the story.
On to the next book.

Good guys win

More of a western style romance. Pretty straight forward with the good guys claiming the moral high ground, and the bad guys very bad. Some humorous moments and good gun fights. Good Sunday afternoon read. I enjoyed it.

Another great read by this author, this has to be the 15th book I've read by him and it's in my top 5. Yes there are mistakes in the book, I reported all errors but even with the errors it was a great read.

Good story

Fun read with a few twists and turns. I enjoy this author regardless of some lack of editing. I will continue to color the author's stories as they are unique in the adventures and maintain a tradition of the western genre.
