A group of estranged friends gather at a cabin in the woods for a reunion party. Their celebration is interrupted when Chase Bowen, a handsome young man, shows up at their door—wet, cold, and stranded. Chase is allowed to join the party while he waits for a mechanic. He has different plans for the partygoers, though. He wants to play party games with the guests. And, in his versions of the games, there are sadistic consequences for losing... Jon Athan, the author of The Law of Retaliation and Sympathy for the Widow, invites you to join the party. Be warned, you might lose a finger or two. This book contains scenes of graphic violence. This book is not intended for those easily offended or appalled.
3.5 stars. This had a really great start to it. The reunion of these old friends in a remote cabin, as old wounds are reopened and tension between them is established. I was looking forward to seeing why Jackson was so hard on Brian and why Brian felt so insecure about his success. Just all of it had my interest. Really great foundation built by Athan. Now where the story starts to unravel is when Chase’s partners, Rory and Hazel entered the chaos, after he had begun the process of psychological warfare. They enter the cabin and a giant portion of the book is modeled after Funny Games, where the trio forced the group of friends to play sadistic games, hurting and killing one another. All for no other reason than these perpetrators are just psychopaths. There are a lot of gruesome acts and uncomfortable situations here, and the story pivoted to body horror, instead of capitalizing on the momentum it had created early on. Nothing was written badly, but there just wasn’t much purpose to the book aside from writing violence. And the ending was awful, too. It was exactly what I hoped it wouldn’t be, and there was no character left with anything being accomplished or any resolution to anything. Strong start with a very weak follow through and eventual finish. Far from my favorite Jon Athan experience.
I picked this book up when I saw the cover. This is basically The Strangers meets Would You Rather. I enjoyed it. I loved the games chosen, and the punishments were gruesome.
Chapter 11 was a bit much for me 😂 it's the one thing that creeps me out haha.
Funny how a simple act of kindness could shatter a weekend and turn it into a game of nightmares. Although the characters lacked depth, I was rooting for every one of them to win, really.
The tortures were creative, the villains were heartless, and I wanted to go full John Wick on them—punish them and make them bleed. Ugh. I was so angry. This is an entertaining read. For a Splatterpunk enthusiast like me, the kills were satisfying, just how I like it.
A group of friends get together to spend a weekend in a remote cabin. Not long after arriving a man knocks on the door needing to use the phone because his car broke down. He introduces himself as Chase and comes inside. Then all hell breaks loose. Chase has brought a couple of friends to the party and he wants to play some games. The games Chase wants to play are sadistic and deadly. Can the friends outwit the gamemaster to live through the next few hours or will they all die revealing their deepest secrets to each other?
Party Games is one of the most tense home invasion tales I have read so far. This story had my anxiety high from the moment there was a knock at the door. The games were absolutely insane and there was little hope for anyone surviving. Remind me to not ever open my door for strangers.
I received a copy in exchange for my honest review.
4.5 ⭐️ This was one of Athan’s best to date for me. This is the story of a couple named Brian and Harper. They invite 2 other couples out to their cabin for a reunion. Not long into the reunion a knock at the door happens and in enters Chase. He needs to borrow the phone for a mechanic. In the meantime he’s just wants to play a few “party games “🥳 This book was way more brutal than I anticipated. I highly recommend this to those who love the Extreme.
Not one of my favourite books by Jon Athan, I've read much better from this author,I found it a little slow and bit irritating at times, the characters were annoying and I wanted to scream at them several times during reading the book. The plot was good... but I just couldn't get into the rhythm of it....I'm not really sure why to be honest!! It wasn't as gory or horrifying as I thought it was going to be... I'm glad that I read it and I will certainly keep on reading Jon Athan's books in the future.
Jon Athan is known for his extreme horror novels and this one is no exception. This book delivers exactly what it promises, gory, graphic and deadly games for fans of movies like Saw and Funny Games. Some scenes feel a little far fetched and at various times I wanted to yell at the characters for doing something dumb but lets be realistic, we're not reading this looking for a literary masterpiece, we want horror and that's what we get and buckets of it (literally).
Man Jon Athan never disappoints. It is crazy to me that this book is almost 6 years old. Its also really cool to read some Athan's older stuff and see how his writing has evolved. This book is a brutally violent home invasion nightmare inspired by the movie funny games and its definitely more violent. There are just some awesome scenes in this one. Jon Athan is one of my favorites and I highly recommend this one and all of his work
My feet still hurt. Seriously. My feet hurt. Anyways, this is the kind of book that makes you fear strangers. The start was kinda slow, but once the blood starts to pour, it rains. I probably enjoyed this book too much. But I love extreme horror. So there you have it. Excellent read and I recommended it to every one
This book, I don’t think it’s going to leave me anytime soon. I read the book because I needed a knife on the cover for my bingo card.
There is every trigger warning in this book. I’m still blown away. It’s a different kind of home invasion story. And that’s what I liked. I couldn’t guess where it was going and there are a lot of twists and a constant feeling of dread.
Piss poor attempt at rewriting Funny Games. Didn't make me cringe - didn't horrify - characters had no real backstory - no attempt at a real plot twist. Pretty much a straight forward horror for horrors sake type story.
Another winner by Jon Athan! I really enjoyed this one but then again, I do love extreme horror and stories with senseless acts of violence. This story doesn't seem to be a favorite among many of Athan's readers but it is one of mine. It held my attention throughout the whole book.
A group of friends meet up at a cabin as a sort of reunion. But the reunion starts off with distain and past feelings that dredge up uncomfortable feelings for everyone. As the night progresses and everyone arrives who will be coming, a knock at the front door shakes everyone.
As the debate whether to open the door or not they finally do. There is a handsome young man by the name of Chase on the other side of the door complaining that he had car trouble down the road and would like to use someone’s phone.
The group all disagree on what to do. Half don’t mind he comes in, the other half aren’t sure and don’t trust the stranger. Eventually they agree to let Chase in. Because what harm can an attractive young man do?
Things go from 0 to 100 at a decent pace and we quickly realize this man isn’t here for a phone call after all. He wants to play some party games whether the hosts want to or not. Will the friends win the games or will Chase and his minions?
This book is brutal and has one of my favorite tropes in it. Home invasion. There is gore galore in the story and it’ll have you hollering at the book in certain moments. Jon created a sick story here and I will of course be reading his other books.
A reunion bringing old friends together will end in torture and tragedy when a stranger turns up at the cabin asking for help. Good intentions will lead to party games that have a deadly twist. Will any of them make it through the night alive?
Oooo this was a brutal book from Jon Athan! I know I'm in for a treat when I read his books, and this was another fantastic, gripping extreme horror.
His books aren't for the faint hearted but if you're a horror/thriller fan with a strong stomach you are going to want to read these immediately!
Also I would love a sequel to this book, it's finished amazingly but I can imagine this leading onto another!
A group of estranged friends meet at a cabin to catch up and make up for lost time. There is tension right away and things are made more uncomfortable when a stranger comes knocking seeking assistance. Skeptical at first, the friends decide to invite him inside but that ends up being the worst mistake they could have made. He wants to play some classic camping games….but with dire consequences.
This is a classic case of the Good Samaritan getting taken advantage of. It’s books like these that make people question others motives and whether or not they should help people who appear in distress.
This is an Athan book so we know the gruesome torture was bound to happen. There was a slow build up to all of that which I actually enjoyed the whole time. Just upping the ante with each game.
I enjoyed the villains in this book, especially Chase. I liked that they are just plain nuts and just wanted to see everybody squirm. It started with almost a psychological terror that ramped up to violence and torture through the night.
My only real issue was that I didn’t like how docile and willing the cabin friends seemed to be to go along with things, especially towards the beginning. They didn’t really fight the guy. Even when asked multiple times to leave, nobody MADE him leave or used physical force. He just said Na I’m staying and they were like darnit ok. Like come on. Somebody have some balls. I think in most cases people wouldn’t have been so “nice” to him.
Loved the escalation. Loved the cat and mouse game that was played. Loved the ending. It was a basic plot but I was entertained and I cringed in spots as well.
9 stars. Expect nothing. A mix of home invasion, sociopath, sadist, Adrenaline dependent. Good ending
So I've read this book in one day. Two sittings but one day. You've got six friends who don't see that much after school and they meet. It's way of the owner of the house to tell his friends that his girlfriend is pregnant. The main problem is that all of his friends don't like him - like at all. They pick so much on him because he is quite rich and from time to time he do stuff that piss them off since he is awfully rich. I find it strange to be honest. So a guy is rich and he wants to help other people and it sounds in their head that he feeling superior to them. I didn't get that much as those other characters. Well... moving on.
These people are getting ready to eat when someone arrives at their home and asks for help. As they are waiting for a truck to pick his car up he asks if they want to play a game. Afterwards everything went to shit. You've got some sick games that not only are physical but also pyschological. Jon Athan again shows us then when people are on the brink of despair they show their true colours. It's quite good thriller but if you don't like to read about killing, suffering, cutting and so on then you shouldn't go here. Bear in mind that there is no sexual stuff (which I find a little odd but maybe it was on purpose).
The ending was quite interesting because you are used the books going one way - but yeah this one wasn't. It was highly refreshing to be say the least
Firstly it’s been a dream to ARC for Athan, this is a true pinch me moment! Secondly WOW another book I could not put down 😱
A group of friends decide to get together for a little reunion, they’ve all seemed to of drifted apart over the years, so one big party in a cabin would be good for them right?
Right! That is until Chase shows up, a random stranger that says his cars broken down and he just needs to use the phone. The girls take a fancy to this good looking stranger and ask him to stay for a while, have some food, play some games…but the games Chase has in mind are a little different to your normal ones, they’ll all soon regret inviting this guy in 🫣
WOW 🤯🤯🤯 This had my jaw on the floor on multiple occasions!! It was relentless and Chase…omg Chase, sociopathic psychotic Chase is someone you DO NOT want to cross. Honestly I barely took a breath once the games started!
Absolutely, brutally brilliant!! This was my first time reading this, it’s recently been revised & extended, so if you’ve already read it, I encourage you to go again!
I normally am not a horror fan, and I cannot watch gore on TV or in a movie; however, I can read about it and "enjoy" it and that's what happened with this book. I loved the reunion of six friends in a cabin in the woods setting. One of them being rich and yet acting as though he, too, is just a typical financially stable guy. That would be Brian Reeves. The reader has questions about him immediately because he's introduced as a guy with blue eyes that most people (I assume) think of as bright and beautiful, but they were dead "like a depressed person's." This horror story is the kind that I love!
Suddenly, a stranger shows up and the entire night changes from that point on. Only one spoiler I want to give. They end up playing some games, one being "Two Truths and One Lie," which is a game I always played with my freshman during our "getting to know you" day. That brought back some good and fun memories. I hope others will read this short little book. I loved it!
This Story was kind of like Funny Games meets Devil's Rejects. Not the most original story, but definitely kept me glued to the pages. I would have liked to see more of a backstory to the characters, especially the intruders.
Jon Athan always has a way with making mundane life events turn into absolutely terrifying and insane situations. Always here for it!
A group of friends coming together after years apart. A huge gorgeous cabin in the woods. A small get together with music, food and some drinks. While some tension exists amongst the group, it’s only for a couple nights and they all hope to catch up and experience a great time.
Chase, an unexpected guest arrives at their door looking for help. There’s always one in the group who wants to shut the door and send them away but on the other side there’s always someone who will let he stranger in as they want to help and care for them and ultimately save the day.
Chase immediately makes things uncomfortable with little digs and the tension rises. When the group is read to send Chase off, the rest of his party shows up.. Hazel and Rory. Without giving the guests much of a choice, Chase insists they play party games and then they will leave.
The first mistake was agreeing that they could stay. The “party games” quickly turn uncomfortable, scary and painful. Then things become downright bloody, violent and sick.
No time is wasted here, Chase is clearly evil in all ways. He’s a character you’ll love to hate as he has zero redeeming qualities but given he’s most likely a psychopath, his charm and narcissistic tendencies definitely help you get into the story.
I didn’t read the first edition of this book but all I know is the work and character development the author put into the book was apparent from chapter one. Brutal and always has me saying “is he really going to have them do that? And then “oh yeah he definitely is”. Ha! It’s what I love about him. He punches me right in the face with his writing. Extreme horror that has a plot. As simple as it sounds it isn’t often done, but Athan is the absolute master of it!
As always, I am blessed to be part of the Jon Athan Street team and I am incredibly thankful for the beautiful physical ARC of this book. I can’t wait to see what comes next.
Let's set the scene...you're invited to a party at an old acquaintances home, even though you are dreading even being there because the guy is pretty into himself and his fortune. Things are just feeling awkward and off, you just want to high tail it out of there. But, there is someone at the front door. Seems odd when there is normally no one in the area around this time of year and you don't have any neighbors. You go to check it out and it is just some young man, maybe early twenties and gives off the 'James Dean' vibe. Seems harmless, right? You'd think that inviting this young man in for a nice hot meal, to use your phone and allow him to get warm would put you in his good graces, not in the slightest. This group of old "friends" have another thing coming. Just when you thought that your childhood games couldn't become something sinister, you thought wrong when it came to this young man and his friends, whom you are about to also meet, as he just lets them into your home. Chase, the main protagonist; Hazel, his girlfriend and their close friend Rory are here to play a little game of Charades, The Ice Cube Game, Truth or Dare,Yakyuken (a Japanese game of Rock, Paper, Scissors; but with a twist, instead of just taking off clothing, you take a part off of your own body), Pinata, Would You Rather and Russian Roulette. The games get very gruesome and just when you think that there might be hope for someone in the end. The intruders come back to finish the game in their own way. I would recommend to anyone that may be intrigued to know what exactly happened during these games and how the whole story played out. I just request giving Jon Athan's books a read, he is talented.
This was bleak. Bleak and revolting. It's a horrible home invasion story (cabin invasion, to be exact), explicitly inspired by Haneke's Funny Games. Jon Athan's version, however, is much, much worse: the victims are six, not three (potentially six and a third, since one of the women is fifteen weeks pregnant); they're old friends who haven't seen each other for a while, innocently hoping for an interesting reunion; and the young perpetrators are three, one of them a woman, their nihilism something they wear proudly. Ultimately though both film and book agree in the most essential element: occasionally evil happens for no metaphysical reason, it's just about fun and games ad infinitum (and ad nauseam, I might add).
The book starts with the guests' (rather overblown) sense of friendliness towards strangers while facing head on the hardships of friendship - and slowly turns into the vicious (but hopeless) opposition to the invaders' lack of empathy, abuse of power, and their sinister tendency to cause moral drama. It doesn't take long till bodies, minds, souls and relationships collapse before violence posing as a different kind of rationality: game playing, sticking to rules, winning and losing, reward and punishment. The invaders are relentless, a natural force gone insane; the guests just a bit too human, too amenable, and certainly not strong enough to defend themselves, either spiritually or mentally.
Yet the most disturbing part for me wasn't the carnage; it was those last few pages after the "proper" ending. Those hints sent my imagination places I didn't want to go.
Highly recommended for fans of extreme horror, preferably experienced ones!
*ARC REVIEW* A group of friends meet up at a cabin for a little reunion. During their evening, a stranger arrives at the cabin asking for help. They let him in and soon he and his friends are making them play party games, with a dangerous twist. And they aren't so sure any of them will make it out alive.
I read this one last year and absolutely loved it. So naturally I jumped at the chance to get an ARC of the new updated edition. This was a brilliantly brutal read, and it definitely packs a punch. And can we just talk about how awesome this new cover is? It perfectly sums this book up. As always with this author, check the TWs.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Warning! This book is not for those who aren’t familiar with Splatterpunk Genre.
Imagine you go out with your friends for a celebration out at some cabins in the woods, when a stranger comes knocking on the door. He’s stranded out in the cold and he’s soaked. Although your friends are hesitant he’s still welcomed. He wants to play games, but these party games are different. If you lose it’ll be your worst nightmare!! Jon Athan always knows how to keep a reader sitting at the edge of their seat! This book is gory, intense and captivating!
Next party you go to, be cautious with the man in the woods!
You think you’re doing the right thing letting a stranded stranger wait inside… until you realize… never trust anyone who shows up uninvited to your cabin in the middle of nowhere at night.
I’ll never look at party games the same again. The author mentioned this book was inspired by the film Funny Games (1997) so I’ll have to check it out. For a modern vibe, it’s giving total The Strangers energy… but with twisted, bloody games.
Classic Jon Athan: unhinged, gory, and absolutely relentless
It’s truly amazing how Jon Athan wrote this book I felt like I was inside the book my feet still hurts! This book was so much fun it was gory and disgusting I was invested to the story the whole time. I was just sad it was over this was my second book by this author and I’m so excited to read more books by Jon Athan.
