A bargain must be struck before the Age of Mortals can be truly realized.
For Elise, Ermolt, and Athala, the price is high. Not only do they have to find the dragons that have been hidden for centuries, but they have to kill them. Their first stop is Jalova, home of Teis, God of the Sky, and their enemies the overseers, a group of thieves led by Merylle Callac, former High Priest of Teis. Merylle wants help them, and her terms are simple - she wants revenge of her former God. Elise and her companions are more than willing to comply.
Will Elise, Athala, and Ermolt be able to slay Sirur with Merylle's help, or will they face the wrath of Meodryt for their failure?

This is the second book in the Heroes by Necessity series and follows on just weeks after the end of the events in book one. Athala Dohn a wizard, Ragan Ermolt a barbarian and Elise a Conscript of the Temple of Ydia, are the main characters from book one and into book two. At the end of the first book, Athala had uncovered the spell that would release the hidden dragon called Meodryt from its suspended, frozen life. Their God Ydia, now has her own dragon released and sets the three on a quest to release and kill the dragons of the other Gods to start the Era of Mortals.
They receive the message from the dragon that it will let them know when to move on to the next target. Unfortunately, during this time the three are fugitives from the law and wanted for murder and heresy. They are being hunted and have had to change their hiding places multiple times. They finally get the message they have been waiting for in a hugely dramatic showing by the dragon! They are told to go to Jalova, the next big town, to kill the Sky God’s dragon Sirur, probably to be found within the Temple of Teis.
They travel to the next town and start to investigate and look into the blueprints and background of the temple. They find out the former High Priest, Merylle, suddenly left the Temple and was replaced by another the same day. Merylle then took the unexpected position of leader of the Overseers, a group of thieves. She hears of their appearance in town and questioning, and ‘invites’ them for a chat at her HQ. After some disagreements and fighting, a solution is reached and they get Merylle on their side, but haven’t told her exactly why they want into the temple and its huge dome. The book culminates with what happens at the Overseers HQ and then at the Temple of Teis. Whether they will succeed in freeing another dragon, but this time in order to kill it, will have to be found out by the reader, I certainly won’t pre-empt a reader’s enjoyment, by letting them know exactly what happens. They come across a foe from the previous book who is also wanting the dragon to be freed, but for other end purposes.
This was a great follow-up book and I would certainly say, read the first book, before trying to read the second one. There is background given, but you will have a better understanding of the characters and what they are doing. I read the first book some time ago and I was lucky to receive an ARC copy of the second book, which also included the first book as well. I actually read both, to give me a refresher of the beginning of the series, which was a great way to set up the action and consequences of the trio’s actions. I thought it was a great follow-up read and really enjoyed it. I have freely given my own opinion of the book above.
