Love follows no rules...

Growler and Anna begin their lives at the cosh, a place with only one rule: A switch may not favor only one shifter, because it makes her weak. This is a rule Anna has no choice but to break, as Growler steals her heart again and again.

Boss cuffed him on the back of the neck and forced him to bend as they headed into the meadow. “Keep your eyes down.”
The other alphas were already strolling across the meadow as men, hard males all, they headed for a stage to the far side of where Growler had dropped the vampire head at the feet of Anna. She’d looked as beautiful as he had remembered. There had been many fair switches in the meadow, but none had called to him like Anna. He could not have taken that vampire head to anyone else.
Up onto the stage the alphas manhandled him. “Stand tall, that the switches may examine you,” Boss told him.
Growler did so, knowing he’d passed the alpha’s tests, and he could raise his chin.
One switch with long dark hair, caramel skin, and a plain white dress that stirred the imagination stopped in front of them. “His name?” she said to Boss.
“Growler,” Growler growled.
The switch laughed and covered her mouth. “Such a fyne name. It fits you. You were the one growling in the forest this morning?”Growler nodded once. When the switch gave him one last coy smile and wandered off, he set his eyes to look for Anna. She was near the center of the circle, looking lost, nearly wringing her hands, her sister talking urgently to her. His eyes never wavered from her, as the alphas seemed to wait for something. They all stood on the stage, and switches openly gazed at them from seats and perches.
A pair of switches passed in front of them, eyeing him up and down. He growled, because he could not help himself. It was what he did. Boss cuffed him on the back of the head.
Anna had heard his growl. She looked up, seeing him for the first time. Recognition crossed her face, then a smile. He was glad to see it. He stood a little taller, shook out his muscles a bit more...

Ye writers can't speaketh the lingo

'Twas meant to be a prequel, the story of what happened to Breath Coven so long ago. Methought perhaps to peruse the story and enjoy it. Alas, I came upon the dialogue, and never was language so mangled in meaning! Forsooth, my ladies/authors, 'tis the spoken word ye write! 'Tis language, and hath rules and meaning. Dost thou purport to write as the merry folk of the 16th century spake to one another? Then get thee to a library; go, and study those works of the time! Learn, for example, that 'cometh' means 'comes.' Thus, 'she cometh' and 'he cometh' but 'they' only 'come.' Learn that 'thee' is the archaic form of 'you' (object) but that 'Thou' is for 'you' (subject), 'thy' means 'your' but 'thine' means 'of yours' Thus it is: Thou mayest tell thy tale in period dialect, but attend thee well to thy grammar lest thou shalt confuse all.

I very much enjoyed Lisa Ladew's One True Mate series, so I thought I'd give this one a try. Based on this first book, I don't like this Switch of Fate series quite as much. The writing style is quite different. I think one of the things that lowered the experience for me was hearing "Growler growled" so many time (which, yes, isn't necessarily writing style, but this is not what I was talking about). Seriously, it is said far too frequently. I get it. His name is Growler (though not because he growls) and he growls on a regular basis (apparently a complete coincidence). He's a bear. Bears growl. His name could've been Rufus just as easily (or any other name, for that matter) and I get the feeling he would still have growled fairly regularly. That being said, the story was still quite interesting. It was much different than the One True Mate series, though they are similar in the sense that there is a foe being combated to protect the humans and female shifters are incredibly rare. In the One True Mate series, the KSRT (Kane Special Response Team), a team of wolven, is actively battling the demon, Kane, who killed almost all female shifters 25 years ago. In this book, the Cosh switches and shifters are tasked with combating vampires. Overall, not a bad read, but I was contemplating not continuing the series. Having since finished the first and started the second books of the series, I am glad I continued.

Keep in mind this is the prequel. Unfortunately, none of the characters appear to carry over to the rest of the series. (I really want to know what happens next for Anna and her sister switches and the males and figure out what the deal is with Antoni. Why is she so against mating? Why is there dark intertwined with the pink of her magic [does it have something to do with vampire magic]?) It also appears this may have taken place long before the first book in the story begins. This book is not necessary for understanding the Switch of Fate series, but it does give you a leg up on understanding exactly what switches are and their purpose and relations with the chosen shifters.

Learn knowledge about how switches lived in the past. Growler and Anna

This is the exciting adventures of Growler and Anna. This takes place in the 1500's and shows how the shifters and switches lived originally.
Anna and her sister Teresa, were bond switches but we're not part on the group of switches that hunted vampire and lived together.
Anna,Teresa and Growler were all chosen by fate on the same day. They all glowed orange at different times and places, and felt a pull to travel to the cosh. The cosh is where the switches live, but it is hidden.
There is an attraction between Anna and Growler but it is forbidden for them to only be mated to a single person. That is the rule set upon them by the leader, Antimony.
This book has vampire fights, five different types of magic, rebellions and love. I read Switch of Fate before this one, but I don't think it matters when you read this story, because this is in the past, so the characters are all different.

I really enjoyed this prequel to the main series and the how it all began story. I loved Anna her strength and determination to better her magic and the lives they were leading, as though she sensed from the start things weren't quite as they should be. Growler was awesome not caring what he had to go through as long as he protected Anna, she was his focus and his love. They both felt they needed to prove themselves to all the others. Intense, suspenseful and fantastical read with lots of magic. All sorts of shifters and different s'witches all in one place. I loved the sound of the place Growler found, it sounded peaceful and beautiful almost calming. I would love to know one day what becomes of them after this book ends, how they progress and change. This is paranormal at its best and most extreme, true bliss to read.

The Prequel to the Switch of Fate series is not a story of anyone you know or have heard or, and it doesn't advance the current series story lines in any way other than giving you a glimpse into the relationship between the switches and shifters was back.

This book starts in 1503 - the shifters are all around in Five Hills, and the switches are everywhere, they are common place and meant to be seen.

This story tells of Anna, a switch, and Growler, a bear shifter who fall for each other. It also tells the story of how the relationship worked in the old times and what it meant. It really just gives you an insight into the history in a time before the mass kill-off, when things were "normal". kind of all the things that the shifters and switches should know from their upbringing but that has been lost over time while they were dormant

I was in a rut with my reading when I came upon this book. It was just what I needed to bring me out of it. This book is short as I really don't like reading books under 200 pages. Yes, it is just under that, but it is crammed packed full of romance, suspense, and action that makes you want more at the end. I would love to have a book or books that take place after the end of this book and before Switch of Fate 1. I have many questions about Growler and Anna after they moved into their new home after the final battle. Maybe these will be answered in the series as we read them. I have read all five of them now, so I know after reading Switch of Fate 4 that a lot of things are going to be revealed by the end of the series. This one is so far my favorite of the five.

Took me a little while to get into this story as the concepts were all new and different! Anna and her sister Theresa are called up by the Cosh, which is basically like a coven of witches from the different elements who kill vampires. Along with their elemental shifters who aid in killing these vampires. Antimony is the cosh-switch who is the leader of this coven but isn’t always around. Growler gets called to the shifters as a cosh-shifter and is all about Anna, however, switches aren’t allowed to favour any one shifter and not allowed to mate as this will lead to being banished!

Fate has determined a different outcome😀 Happy reading 📖

Switch of Fate Prequel by Lisa Ladew is a paranormal story that is full of magic and mystery, where the norm is not the norm. This is a story of forbidden fruit, desires and attractions. A story where you wonder if your other half, your soulmate is out there but knowing that it goes against everything you are told, knowing it goes against the rules. But rules are made to be broken, right? But when fate, destiny even, have other plans all you can do is follow your heart even if the war is a bloody battle.

Thank goodness for prequels. Lisa Ladew has used this prequel, in my mind, not only to tell us about Growler and Anna but to lay a foundation of the world she's created where shifters, switches, and vampires exit; all controlled by Fate. There's a lot of information and backstory here which is absolutely terrific. Plus we have two very strong characters in our hero and heroine so that makes things even better. What a great beginning to what I'm hoping turns out to be a great series. Fingers crossed.

Growler and Anna

This book is before the switch of fate series but it's the past along long long time ago how they started mating and having magical houses. I would of liked to see years later? Because we know in the series (currant time)they all vanish or die not been around for 150 years until we meet cora (book 1) so it's kind of sad what happens to them? Who is auntie? Is she a blood which as she had pink magic? Or is she Anna but because she is old it looks pink but it's red really?

This is a great introduction to the switches. Magic and mystery abound. Rules don't always make sense and they are definitely made to be broken. Growler and Anna have a bond that they just can't act on but they are not alone and their secret isn't really as secrets as they think. Change is coming.

Great

I have fallen in love with these stories. No give aways, just honest opinion and high recommendation. The theme is great, the story is easy to read and follow. Love the story that grows deeper and more interesting.
Great job of pulling the reader in and holding their attention.

Impatiently waiting for more

A good prequel

At least now we know who the wild woman in book 2 is.
I thought this would explain the reckoning. But it doesn't.
I strongly disapprove of the C word. Even if the authors have put the letters 'he' on the end. Fine call a certain part of a females anatomy it but not another person. It has no place spoken or written.

A Great History Lesson

Switch of Fate: Prequel tells the history of the Switches and their Shifters. The story is a little hard to follow at times which is why I gave it 4 stars instead of 5. If you have enjoyed the SOF series then you should defiantly read the prequel. It will give you an insight to his the Switches and their bonded Shifters came to be parts of covens.

Start here!

Really nice to get this book on how swatches and shifters started back in the day when “they knew themselves”; how the covens began— I read this book after book 1; but if you are new to the series I highly recommend you START here. I quite liked Grower and Anna; now I’m for book 2....

Wow! Wow! Fantastic read!

This book was awesome. Growler and Anna felt the first twinge of attraction from the first time they saw each other in town. Meeting later on was true magic. Their bond and love for each other kept me wanting to turn each and every page. Sad it ended. Highly recommended. You’ll love it. I promise.

Touch and Go. Almost closed this book without getting past the first few pages, but I'm glad I continued. I haven't read any of the SOF books so this was definitely dropping me in at the deep end of the pool. It has laid a lot of foundation that I hope will be supporting the rest of the series. It was action, romance, and magic which worked well making an intriguing story.

While this book provides info on 'how it used to be', some terms are confusing and it is very, very angsty. I pushed through to read it all and enjoyed the final quarter of the story, but it is not necessary to read it for any background on the series - in fact it might confuse the reader. Recommend Readers start the series with Book 1 - Switch of Fate

An interesting beginning to the Switches

This book really explains how the covens began and how each switch received more power with their mates and resonants. Anna is strong willed and determined to make things right for her, her mate, her sisters and the shifters of their cosh. I loved how the story went and I cannot wait to see what’s next with the switches of today.

Decent

I liked the characters but they the story dragged a little for me. Growler is adorable. The heroes likable, the villains unsavory, but it didn't click for me. It took me three days to get through it, I kept putting it down. It never consumed me.

Anna and Growler

Once again a winner! I can't wait to read about the changes the next 10 years will bring. And of course, Antimony's story. What made her the way she is, and how does she spend the next 10 years? Lisa and Grace, you guys are awesome, please don't keep us waiting!

The covens beginnings

Initially a bit difficult to follow, but then I became hooked on the story of how covens, the switches and shifters came to be. A love story within the greater story.
I am curious as to what Antimony really was/is
