4.5/5. What a superbly written book, a real gem from an author new to me. Morgan Davis was the son of a ranger and raised by another after his parents perished on the day of his birth - and that of his twin brother, whose existence was unknown to him as the twin was taken away and raised by other people. Morgan doesn't know any other life than to be a ranger - a damn good and efficient one at that. To this Texan whose life is committed to enforce the law, it is thus an affront of the worst kind to be confronted with the picture of his own face on a Wanted poster, with a $5000 price tag, dead or alive. He hunts down this accused murderer across state borders, determined to bring him in to face justice as well as to once and for all disassociates his own name and face from that of the real culprit. Morgan finally catches up with the alleged murderer in Wyoming, but in addition to confronting the disturbing sight of his own doppelganger, Nicholas Brayden, he has to also deal with Nick's hellion of a younger sister, Lorilee, who is not going to let Morgan take Nick back with him to Texas without a fight. Lori uses all the weapons she has at her disposal on Morgan - her not inconsiderable charm and wit and her lethal sharp-shooting skills.

The 3 main characters and their 'road-trip' back to Texas are brilliantly penned, each with their internal and external struggles. Morgan is a marvellous hero, alpha through and through, he is taciturn and hard-nosed, meting out the law by the books and is uncorruptible and innately decent. And lonely. He doesn't realise how lonely until he met the Brayden siblings, their close bond makes him ache for family and softness and warmth in his life. In the fiery Lori, he finds his equal as she too is single-minded in her determination to right a wrong, in this case, to save her brother's life whom she believes fervently to be innocent of the charges. Nick too is a wonderful secondary hero, a naturally caring and humorous man, a non-violent person who had been pushed into a bad situation and was forced to make the most of it. And so Nick continues to make the most of his status as prisoner, remaining dignified even as his ire grows over what he deems to be unjust treatment by Morgan and his inability to prevent the growing attraction between Lori and Morgan.

As their journey progresses, the interpersonal interactions become more complex, as Lori and Morgan struggle to contain their inconvenient passion and growing feelings for one another. On a completely different level, Morgan and Nick grudgingly develop respect for one another as they are forced to work together against ruthless bounty hunters after the sizable reward money. Each man strangely recognising himself in the other, not just in their uncanny physical resemblance but their ids, and they too struggle with their growing empathies for one another.

The sexual chemistry between Lori and Morgan is there from the start, and it never gets strange and icky despite his physical resemblance to her 'brother', Nick, and I usually am quite sensitive to such questionable situations. The boundaries are well set by the author. Lori, though shocked by their outward likeness initially, could always see their differences - the way life has hardened and aged Morgan physically as well as spiritually, while Nick unfailingly remains her gentle and protective big brother. This is a fascinating story, the relationship between Nick and Morgan is just as compelling as the central love story, and Nick gets his own lady love also. I'm highly impressed by this book and author.

Nicholas Braden and Morgan Davis are identical twins, separated at birth. Because one is wanted for murder and the other one is a Texas Ranger, their lives intersect. Neither knows of the other's existence.

Ranger Morgan Davis has already had 2 attempts on his life (by bounty hunters) because he is so alike this man, Nicholas Braden. So, he sets out to find the accused murderer ... all the way to Wyoming.

This is a rather common plot line but Potter turns it on its head with an amazing array of character studies. As a newborn, Morgan Davis was found in the cellar of a burning cabin, everyone else was dead. He was raised with Texas Rangers and he saw the world in black or white, good or bad.

Nicholas was raised with a band of Gypsy-like nomads who had a traveling Medicine Show. He's relaxed and loves life; he has a great sense of humor. When accused of murdering an unarmed young son (of the town's cattle baron), Nicholas escapes to Wyoming, starting a ranch, along with his sister Lorilee.

Morgan finds Nicholas and Lorilee in Wyoming and immediately heads them back to Texas. Thus begins a fascinating study of the 3 characters. Lori and Nicholas are constantly probing to find Morgan's weaknesses - and find none! Lori eventually figures out that she is attracted to Morgan - and the feeling is mutual.

This is a powerful story and it makes fascinating turns all the way to the epilogue. This story is well worth the time to read the 430+ pages. 5 stars.
