Here is a lively retelling of three classic fairy tales, Little Red Riding Hood, The Three Little Pigs, and The Boy Who Cried Wolf, expressed in an utterly contemporary way -- in fresh, fast, and funny rap.
Laugh as our hapless wolf tries desperately to find something to eat. First he meets up with a Red Riding Hood with attitude, then three pigs with guts, finally a boy who's in over his head.
David Vozar's text explodes in the vernacular of the '90s, and Betsy Lewin's hilarious illustrations are the perfect accompaniment.

Yo Hungry Wolf follows the well known wolf of fairy tales, specifically The three little pigs, little red riding hood, and the big who cried wolf. The stories are told from the wolf’s perspective and in a rap format. It definitely would fit well into either a perspective unit or any fairy tale units, and kids tend to love the “fractured fairytale” type of story. I think there are some better ones out there as this one just seemed a bit long to me and reading the raps doesn’t come totally naturally to me. It did have its humor though.
I love how there are multiple stories in this one book. The author also included a lot of strong language such as infiltrate and disguise, for example, that can lead into a larger discussion. The rhyming is also super fun!
This was cute, and you have to consider the kids’ perspective. My boys were giggling; so was I. My husband even laughed a few times. A nice spin on the classics!
Seemed a little long to me but a very entertaining way to tell the nursery rhymes! It would be fun to use this as inspiration to try and write your own raps.
Had fun reading this out to a client, and find it to be a clever interpretation of three different stories involving a hungry wolf. Colorful and fun, and the rhymes flow very well.
Written with strong rhythm, as nursery raps, the stories could potentially be fun read alouds if performed with pizzazz. The nursery rhymes included in the book are The Three Little Pigs, Little Red Riding Hood, and the Boy Who Cried Wolf. In the final tale, the wolf comes back in the story declaring, “Pardon me for interrupting this rhyme,/ but I’ve been off these pages, biding my time./Throughout this book I’ve had barely a meal/But this bakery story could be a good deal.” It is this sort of playful story telling that makes the nursery rhymes seem new again. The pictures are simplistic water colors that show the big bad wolf in a three piece suit in various pastel colors.
It was really an outstanding book because I thought it was going to be the piggy was going to be eaten. No, it wasn't it was about the hungry wolf trying to eat then the story went on about the little red rappinghood and it showed some really weird rap After that it went on about the little boy who cried wolf but he had his own bakery of donuts and cried I got robbed but he thought it was just a joke then the wolf cam and ate all his donuts but nobody believed him and thats how the story ended.
