Our favorite princess returns―hiking boots and all―this time loaded with questions for her daddy. Everyone knows a princess. As this princess and her daddy wander through the woods, all kinds of wonders reveal themselves. She discovers that no matter who you are, a princess lies inside of us.
Carmela LaVigna Coyle's first book, Do Princesses Wear Hiking Boots? is enjoyed by little princesses everywhere. And now there are several Do Princess titles to choose from. She writes from her studio in Colorado with a puppy on her lap, and beside a wall of glass "to better see the seasons."
Carmela wrote her first story, "Forget-Me-Not," when she was ten-years-old. She hasn't forgotten it... she just can't find it.
She's married, and has two fabulous college age children.
We've been enchanted by the other stories in the Do Princesses... series by Carmela LaVigna Coyle. The illustrations are fun (and this book has a scavenger hunt of items to find at the end of the book) and the rhyming narrative is fun to read aloud. The stories seem to have a bit of repetition, but not overwhelmingly so and our girls really like them. I love that it shows the little girl outside, hiking and enjoying the outdoors, something I'm often trying to get our girls to do!
My little princess loved to see what another little princess likes to do! Cute pictures and real questions little girls might ask. I can't wait to read other princess books by this author.
"Do Princesses Really Kiss Frogs?" by Carmela Coyle is a picture book about a little girl who goes for a hike with her dad, while asking him questions about what princesses do or look like. She asks questions about what princesses wear and what they look like, if they pick up rocks, and of course, if they kiss frogs. The father encourages his daughter to be her own kind of princess by answering the questions while still allowing the daughter to be her own kind of princess, instead of answering with the stereotype of princesses. The father encourages his daughter's imagination and out of the box thinking of princesses as they hike throughout a forrest, stream and valley. The theme of this book is breaking gender stereotypes, and allowing girls to become whatever type of "princess" they want to be, whether it is the typical princess or not. I thought this book was a wonderful way for girls to see that they can be any type of princess that they can imagine or want to be. It shows young girls that princesses do not have to adhere to what is typically portrayed of them in stories, but rather that they can be themselves and still be considered a princess, if that is something they want to be. I would recommend this book to first or second grade girls. I believe that this is the age where girls start to take on typical gender roles and start to see how society sees them and their role because of their gender. This book would be a good reminder that they can still be girls or princesses, but can be their own type of princess, instead of what society tells them they should be.
I love that Do Princesses Really Kiss Frogs? is a positive Daddy and daughter book. I love the theme of Daddy and daughter doing things together and Daddy answering his princess's questions as honestly as he can. The rhymes are catchy and the illustrations are beautiful and ... funny! The seek and find at the end of the book is brilliant!
I think the title of Do Princesses Really Kiss Frogs? is a bit misleading, I thought it was going to be about a fairy tale narrative. It's not. It's so much better!
I think this is my favorite of the 5 Carmela LaVigna Coyle books I've read.
The book is about a princess who goes on a hike with her father. On their journey, she asks her father numerous questions about what a princess would do in each situation. The theme of the book is that everyone is a princess on the inside. I enjoyed the illustrations in the book and often found the dogs' reactions to be comical. As a future teacher, I would use this in a lesson about being yourself.
Genre: Fiction Grade Level: Preschool-2nd I enjoyed reading this book because it discusses what a princess can do. The illustrations are fun to look at as well. This book is a quick and simple read, which may not be the best for some students. I wouldn't read this book often because not everyone would enjoy the topic of princesses. I loved reading this book when I was younger but am not the biggest fan of it now.
While out on a hike with her dad, a little girl asks many questions that are answered in a rhyming format. "How does she carry her water and snack? She carries her things in her favorite backpack." This story also suggests a scavenger hunt though the pages, and challenges the reader to try doing the same on their next hike, or outdoor adventure.
This book is the second book in the Princesses Rule Series and it is about a little girl and her dad going on a hike and her asking him what a princess would do on a hike. At the end of the book her dad takes a picture and there is a place to put your own picture of a "princess in nature." This book is sweet and it's great for a father to read to their daughter.
I love this series for the girls in my life. The books teach young girls that being a "princess" is about more than fairy tales. It's about being yourself, doing your thing you way.
This book is so adorable! A great back-and-forth sweet conversation between a daddy and a daughter, with great comedy and the sweetest ending. It's sure to bring smiles to any daddy-daughter pair.
