Professional pet sitter Daphne Templeton loves the holidays in Sylvan Creek, Pennsylvania. And nothing gets her into the spirit more than the town’s annual Bark the Halls Ball. The whole community will be there to wag their tails, especially this year’s special guest—Celeste “CeeCee” French, founder of a national chain of pet care franchises, who’s returning home to announce plans for a bright new flagship store.
But not everyone’s celebrating CeeCee’s homecoming. Daphne’s friend Moxie Bloom, owner of Spa and Paw, a unique salon for people and their pets, has plenty to growl about. So when CeeCee is found face down under Sylvan Creek's town Christmas tree, stabbed with a distinctive pair of professional-grade pet shears, suspicion lands squarely on Moxie. Despite Daphne’s promises to Detective Jonathan Black, she quickly reprises her role as amateur sleuth. Ably assisted by her basset hound sidekick, Socrates, she must hurry to prove her friend’s innocence before a killer barks again . . .

Bethany Blake lives in a small, quaint town in Pennsylvania with her husband and three daughters. When she's not writing or riding horses, she's wrangling a menagerie of furry family members that includes a nervous pit bull, a fearsome feline, a blind goldfish, and an attack cardinal named Robert. Like Daphne Templeton, the heroine of her Lucky Paws Mysteries, Bethany holds a Ph.D. and operates a pet sitting business called Barkley's Premium Pet Care.
This was a fun holiday-themed cozy. I am not usually huge of pet-themed books, but this one wasn't too bad in that regard. I haven't read any of the previous books, so I was a bit lost with who all the characters were and their past connections. However the further I got into the book the less confused I was. The mystery aspect was well done and kept me guessing until the end. I thought there was an awful lot of "romance" angst both with Daphne and Moxie. Hopefully, though Daphne and Jonathan will be a solid couple going forward, and Mike and Moxie can work things out. Last, we get a few recipes (gear towards pets) which is always a nice touch.
My name is Snowdrop. I’m a spoiled toy poodle who adores wearing fancy, sparkling pet clothes❣️ My human was murdered, and I had no place to go until Daphne Templeton took me home to stay with her wise basset hound, Socrates, and her haughty cat, Tink. Thanks to Daphne’s detective friend, Jonathan; her best friend, Moxie; and some other nice humans; the crime’s been solved, and I found my furever home with Daphne and her pets. It’s a very happy ending and a Merry Christmas now!
Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for the chance to read this book!
I have read every one of the Petsitting Mysteries, and I have to say that they are one of my favorite themed series going. Daphne is a wonderful sleuth, who doesn't leave any stone unturned, even if she trips over them first. Her quirky personality, combined with her love for the animals under her care, make this one of the better pet themed cozy series going. Her on again off again romance situation is frustrating but also one of the tantalizing parts of the series; will they or won't they? I am personally in camp YES!
This mystery is really well thought out and goes back many years, but it also hints at things to come for the characters involved. I can't wait to read more and find out what happens next in Daphne's crazy life. Five stars!
The people of Sylvan Creek, Pennsylvania are wild about their pets. A pet bakery, a pet clothing store, a hair salon that has human and pet clients, and right now they are getting ready for the Bark the Halls Ball where people and their pets deck out in their finest attire to dance the night away and enjoy each other’s company. Former resident, Celeste “CeeCee” French is coming home to be the special guest for the affair. She has taken her love of pets nationally with her pet care franchises. But all the tails stop wagging when they learn she is about to set up a store in Sylvan Creek. That would put many town shops out of business.
While the town is barking mad about the prospect of a big box pet store, someone has taken the matter into their own hands and presented the town with CeeCee’s dead body right under the town’s Christmas tree. The discovery is made by professional pet sitter Daphne Templeton and Detective Jonathan Black. Daphne later learns the woman was stabbed with a pair a pet shears. Pet shears that appear to have been taken from the Spa and Paw owned by her friend Moxie Bloom. The good detective asks Daphne to leave the investigation to him but a certain pet keeps dropping clues at her feet, literally. She knows Moxie is innocent so with the help of her basset hound, Socrates and another mysterious pup she sets out to find the real killer.
This is such a fun series. Daphne is a fantastic protagonist, the “conversations” she has with Socrates are very realistic. I talk to my dogs all the time, never about anything as important as murder, but dogs are attentive and great sounding boards – sometimes they can sniff and lick and bark out the perfect answer. Moxie is a true gem. The friendship between her and Daphne always makes me smile. The “relationship” between Daphne and Jonathan is moving slowly but forward with itsy-bitsy steps. We are introduced to two new canines in this story and one is a real treasure/scene stealer and the other has quite the wardrobe.
The animals bring so much to this story. They are not just pets that are fed and petted and left at home when their people go out or to work. They are involved in the mystery and play important roles. The author’s love for these wonderful creatures shines within her words. We met two very interesting and different pups this time and Socrates falls completely into puppy love. All the dogs in this series have found a place in my heart and it is now impossible to pick a favorite. There is another pet in this story that has not found a place in my heart but the owner seems very happy with it and that is what really matters.
Cleverly written, Ms. Blake gives us another mystery to sink our teeth into, full of twists and turns, suspects with motives and opportunities, and a few red herrings to boot. I loved it! I didn’t solve this one early. I was completely captivated to the very end.
I have enjoyed every book in this series. Bethany Blake is such a talented writer. Pet lovers will love this mystery, curl up with yours and enjoy this Midwinter’s Tail. You will thank your Lucky Paws that you did.
There are so many things I love about this series and this installment that I don't know where to start. Once again readers are quickly immersed into Sylvan Creek, the quaint small town that adores its pets. This time, the town is in the middle of their Christmas preparations which include a rather unique play and a Bark the Halls Ball. Unfortunately, once again Daphne has discovered a dead body beneath a park tree and it just happens to be a visitor from the past who was working on opening a famous name retail pet store. There are plenty of suspects but first on the list just happens to be Daphne's best friend, Moxie.
I love so many of the characters from Sylvan Creek. Moxie is offbeat and unique, Daphne is a real animal lover who is always taking in dogs and cats, Daphne's high-strung vet sister is even growing on me. And while there are some hints of romance in this one, I find myself actually wanting some of the couples to move faster because they are just so darn perfect for each other!
And finally there are the pets. Moxie has a pet rat and although I'd never own one, he sounds so cute and adorable. Of course Daphne has Socrates, her wise Basset and still pet sits regularly for her favorite Detectives dogs, Axel and Artie. And this time around we get to meet Snowdrop - the spoiled poodle of the deceased whom Daphne ends up caring for. And let me tell you, Snowdrop steals Socrates' heart! We also meet a sneaky little pug named Tiny Tim, who runs around town in a Bah Hum-Pug! sweater the whole book.
So if you like a good mystery (and one which I didn't figure out), wonderful pets, great characters and a fun cozy town, you can't go wrong with Blake's setting.
I received my copy of "A Midwinter's Tale" from the publishers and Netgalley in exchange for an honest review. I also read it as part of th #HoHoHo readathon.

It's Christmas in Sylvan Creek Pennsylvania, and the town is having a big gala. Local girl made good comes back, and announces she is opening a store to take out some of the local businesses. Naturally, she is soon murdered, and put under the town Christmas tree.
When her supercop boyfriend can't even catch COVID, our amateur sleuth goes to work.
If you are looking for a fun, fast paced cozy mystery, filled with holiday cheer, mystery, murder and mayhem, then A Midwinter's Tail is the book for you. Daphne Templeton is a great character, who loves her pets and family, and doesn't hesitate to get involved in police investigations if the need arises.
When an old high school bully makes a sudden appearance in Sylvan Lake, it causes some residents to relive harsh events that drastically changed their lives.
When someone decides to take matters into their own hands, it leaves Daphne's best friend, Moxie, at the top of the suspect list. With the help of a mischievous pug, Daphne sets her sights on clearing Moxie's name. Fans of this series will be delighted with this addition, as it brings humor, romance and mystery into play.
I really wanted the book to go on and was sad when I had reached the last page. I am looking forward to reading more in this terrific series by Bethany Blake.
I volunteered to read and review an ARC of this book provided by the publisher and NetGalley.
A Midwinter's Tail by Bethany Blake is the 4th book in the Lucky Paws Petsitting Mystery series, and another great addition. Daphne Templeton keeps busy with her pet sitting business, Lucky Paws, and her pet bakery, Flour Power. The town is getting ready for the annual Bark the Halls Ball, with CeeCee French as the special guest. CeeCee is the founder of a national chain of pet care franchises, who grew up in Sylan Creek, announces she is building a store there, which will hurt all the small business in town. When CeeCee is found dead, and Daphne is determined to get to the truth. This book has more twists and turns, that kept me reading page after page. I love the unique people and situations in this book. I found this book to be a quick read, with a well developed plot and characters. I am looking forward to reading the next book in the series. If you love cozy mysteries, I strongly recommend this book/series.
I received this book in exchange for a fair and honest review.
The fourth installment of the Lucky Paws Petting series finds that is winter as the town preparing for the Christmas events. One of the most important is The Deck the Hall ball for pets and their owners. Daphne Templeton and her BFF, Moxie Bloom are at a kick-off event when an old high school nemesis appears and announce she is building her flagship pet supplies to the area. to the area. This means that all the pet business as in the area will surface. Daph's relationship with Detective Jonathan Black is heating up. One night while walking the find the body of CeeCee French under the town's Christmas tree. Daphne ends up with all the dogs including CeeCee spoil pet poodle. Socrates fall in love with Snowdrop. Moxie is the main suspect in the killing. Daphne decided to help clear Moxie. Can she find the answer before Moxie ends off in prison? I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS BOOK AND SERIES. Pet treat recipes are included.
Disclosure: Many thanks to NetGalley and Kensington Books for a review copy. The opinions expressed are my own.
This one those book that you don't want to end. When I saw on my kindle I was at 80% I felt sad. It's heartwarming, makes you feel good and it's lovely. I was happy to meet again the cast of characters, Socrates the philosophical dog above all, and read about the changes in their life and the evolution in their relationships. The mystery was very good and it was full of twists and turns. I cannot say it kept me guessing till the end but I was curious to understand why and how. I hope there'll be a new instalment soon, please don't make me wait another year. Highly recommended! Many thanks to Kensington Books and Netgalley for this ARC
I received a free copy of this book from the publisher through Netgalley and voluntarily reviewed it.
I love this cozy mystery series and this book again reminded me why this is one of my favorite cozy mystery series. A Midwinter's Tail was again a great read, with lots of story, a touch of romance, a great mystery and an awesome cats of both human and animal characters. I really had a great time reading this book and had fun trying to solve the mystery alongside Daphne and spend some time in Sylvan Creek again around Christmas time.
The mystery in this one was a great one. It kept me guessing for a long time. Around the halfway mark I took a moment to guess who I thought was the murderer and for a long time I thought I might be right. But eventually it turned out I was wrong, but another character I suspected was the murderer. The book is full with clues and hints, but it takes a while for everything to fall on it's place and make sense. The actual murderer did make sense, although I wouldn't have minded a few more hints in that direction as my guess for that person was mostly based on a short sentence that stuck with me somehow.
I really enjoy following Daphne, Socrates and her friends as she solves another mystery. This book introduces two new animal side characters that are an important part of the story, Tiny Tim and Snowdrop. And a whole bunch of new side characters, most of which are potential suspects. I like Daphne's character and the way she gets involved in these mysteries and helps to solve them. I like how her snooping is well done and not too forced or awkward. She's fun to read about.
There is also a great cast of side characters among which Moxie, Piper, Daphne's mom and Jonathan Black. I also love how the animals play a role in the story and how each animal has their own personality as much as the human characters. There's also an interesting development with a character who returns to Sylvan Creek and who was Moxie's boyfriend in high school.
The romance also continues a bit in this book and I was quite excited to see how it developed. Daphne is still meeting with Gabriel, but I never had the feeling it was very serious. Nevertheless that part of the plot was handled well. I really liked her scenes with Jonathan Black and I am quite excited to see how the next book will continue that plot line with what happened in this book.
To summarize: I was delighted to return to Sylvan Creek during Christmas time and follow Daphne as she solves another mystery. I really enjoy this awesome cozy mystery series and it's one of my favorite cozy mystery series. I love how the animal characters have as much personality as the human ones and even with a big cast of characters I hardly ever have trouble remembering who is who. This book is full of recurring characters and a whole bunch of new ones too. The mystery was a great one, with lots of clues and hints, but it took some time for it all to fall on it's place. I guessed the murderer wrong, but I did suspect the actual murderer too. And it only all falls om it's place toward the end, which was great, although I wouldn't have minded a few more hints in that direction. I also liked seeing how the romance developed in this book. All in all another great read and I can't wait for the next book.
I guess I just can't let go of Christmas stories just yet, and I'm really glad I didn't let this one wait to read at the end of this year! It was a perfect Christmas cozy mystery!
Sylvan Creek was getting ready for Christmas and the annual Bark the Halls ball. When a former resident and now CEO of a chain of pet supply and service stores arrived in town and was killed, Moxie became the prime suspect. It was no secret that she hated the woman who was killed, but so did a lot of others in town. Daphne hoped that her detective friend Jonathan would at least realize how many others wanted that woman out of the way. When a second body was found the night of the ball, Moxie's friend Mike seemed to be a good candidate for that murder, but Daph and Jonathan had a feeling he was being framed. I hadn't suspected the killer, at first, but the more the clues were leaked, it was hard to ignore them. The showdown was excellent! Socrates the basset hound and his new girlfriend got to help save the day.
I loved that there were so many happy endings going on in this book, it was like a Christmas bonus. As always, my visit to Sylvan Creek was much too short. It's always so cute when Artie the one-eared chihuahua that Jonathan has adopted gets dressed up and prances around. And just when I thought that Daphne's mom was being a little harsh on her because of the second murder, she turned around and did something so nice for Daph at the end. I really enjoyed newcomer dog Tiny Tim, a sweet but mischievous pug who was always seen wearing a "Bah, Hum-pug" sweater. His owner has a funny explanation for that! I hope that Tim and his owner stay around Sylvan Creek.
The characters of Sylvan Creek are at it again and I couldn't be more joyous! While getting ready for the annual holiday festivities, Daphne, Piper and Moxie look forward to an uneventful season, filled with friendship, hot chocolate and warm puppy company! Unfortunately, a quiet time just isn't in the cards for Daphne as she stumbles across another dead body at the local viewing of It's a Wonderful Life. Along with a dead body is a surprise dog, wearing a Christmas bah-humbug sweater, leaving the scene. We are quick to learn an old arch nemesis has arrived back in town and rumor has it, she's opening a rival pet store. Secrets of the past are quickly discovered and revealed, Moxie becomes a most wanted person, and Daphne feels the mysterious pug may be leading her in the right direction to help solve this case and is fascinated with finding out who the mysterious pug belongs to. A Midwinter's Tail keeps us on our own tails until the end with a fast paced, tightly woven, cozy mystery to keep us entertained in front of the fire this holiday season. So grab your slippers, your tea and a comfy chair because you won't be going anywhere until you reach the end! And don't let me forget, you don't want to miss out on Detective Black - he sure is showing a greater interest in Daphne this time around and you want a front row seat to the subtle romance between the two!
I loved this book. I loved, loved, loved it! Bethany Blake's Lucky Paws Petsitting series is charming, funny, clever, and very cozy indeed. In A Midwinter's Tail, the fourth book in the series, pet sitter/pet bakery owner Daphne Templeton strives to discover who killed her former classmate at Sylvan Creek's annual Bark the Halls Ball. When her best friend, Moxie, is suspected of the dastardly deed, Daphne, along with her faithful sidekick, Socrates, is determined to use her sleuthing skills to discover the real culprit before the holiday! Out of 5 stars, I'm giving A Midwinter's Tail a 10 - did I mention that I loved this book?
I won a copy of this book from the publisher through a Goodreads giveaway. Thank you to both.
This was cozy, light mystery of the type that would normally take me a couple days to get through. However, since it was my secondary book that I only read a few pages from each day, it took me longer to get through.
This was my first book by this author and I found it enjoyable and quirky and loved the inclusion of the animals throughout. I do have to say that there was a touch of too much of a good thing -- meaning that some of the character names, play on words of businesses and events, etc. were just a little TOO precious and saccharine at times.
While not a book that I would rave about, I DID find it interesting and entertaining enough to add the prior books in this series to my To Read shelf. I would like to meet these characters from the beginning and read about their previous adventures in amateur sleuthing.
Holiday Cheer, Mystery, Murder, and Mayhem A Midwinter's Tail is the fourth book in Bethany Blake’s Lucky Paws Pet Sitting Mystery series. The storyline is well plotted, and the characters are well developed. This book held my attention from beginning to the end and has plenty of twists and turns, and red herrings that keep the reader guessing. This steadily paced book is an enjoyable, clean read, with an interesting mystery and touches of humor and romance. Ms. Blake provides sufficient background information that this book can easily be read as a standalone. I’m looking forward to seeing what future adventures are in store for Daphne and her friends.
Daphne Templeton is the owner of Lucky Paws Pet Sitting in the quaint, pet-friendly village of Sylvan Creek, and because she loves baking healthy treats for cats and dogs, she recently opened Flour Power, a bakery for pets. She has a Basset Hound named Socrates, who is her loyal companion, and a black Persian cat named Tinkleston. She lives in Plum Cottage on her sister, Piper’s, farm, Winding Hill. Piper is a veterinarian, and her relationship with Professor Roger Berendt is getting serious. Daphne has been casually dating Gabriel Graham, the local newspaper owner and reporter, but building a relationship with Detective Jonathan Black is beginning to look possible. Jonathan has a well-behaved Chocolate Labrador named Axis and an energetic one-eared, crooked toothed, drooling Chihuahua named Artie. Moxie Bloom is her best friend, has a white rat named Sebastian, and owns Spa and Paw, a salon for humans and pets. Daphne’s mother, Maeve Templeton, is the owner of Maeve Templeton Realty.
Sylvan Creek residents are looking forward to the town's annual Bark the Halls Ball for people and pets. On the night of the town’s showing of “It’s a Wonderful Life” at the Bijoux theater, former resident and founder of French’s Poodles & More, a large pet care chain, Celeste “CeeCee” French, announces she’s bringing her flagship store to Sylvan Creek. The opening of this store will adversely affect all the pet businesses in the area. While talking with Jonathan in Pettigrew Park, Daphne’s attention is drawn to the town Christmas tree by a little pug wearing a red sweater and sees a body, which turns out to be CeeCee, under the tree. Moxie’s on the suspect list and while Jonathan thinks it’s almost impossible to believe she committed homicide, he and his partner, Detective Fred Doebler, can’t rule out the possibility, not only because of her potential loss of income but also because of her history with CeeCee. In high school, CeeCee, who was the head cheerleader, future valedictorian, and frequent bully, stole Moxie’s boyfriend, Mike Cavanaugh, at the Sylvan Creek High Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree formal, and she’d never recovered from her broken heart. After her death, CeeCee’s assistant, Jeff Updegrove, dumps CeeCee’s spoiled French poodle, Snowdrop, in Daphne’s lap. Daphne is determined to prove her friend’s innocence, and, with the help of a mischievous pug, sets out to track down the killer.
I received an Advance Reader Copy of this book from NetGalley and voluntarily reviewed it.
I have read all the books in the Lucky Paws Pet-Sitting Mysteries and each one seems to be better than the one before. The village of Sylvan Creek is a quaint small town that adores its pets, and includes them in all parts of their lives. This time, the town is in the middle of their Christmas preparations which include a local take on The Christmas Carol, and a ball for pets, the Bark the Halls Ball. Daphne, our protagonist, meets up with the handsome Detective Jonathan Black at the local park where they unfortunately discover a dead body beneath a large pine tree. The victim just happens to be a former resident who has come back to Sylvan Creek to open a large pet retail store? Would this store put the local merchants out of business? There are plenty of suspects but first on the list just happens to be Daphne's best friend, Moxie, who had a negative encounter with her in the past.
I love so many of the characters from Sylvan Creek. Moxie is that quirky, unique character I love to see in cozies. She owns the salon that takes care of both people and pets. Daphne is a real animal lover who is always taking in stray dogs and cats. She owns the local pet bakery and runs a pet-sitting service. There are two male characters that Daphne is still trying to figure out her relationship with, but I am rooting for Detective Black. The pets are also main characters in this series. Moxie has a pet rat, Daphne has Socrates, her wise Bassett and her cat Tinkelstone while still pet sitting regularly for her favorite Detective's dogs, Axel and Artie. And this time around we get to meet Snowdrop - the spoiled poodle of the deceased whom Daphne ends up caring for. Finally we meet a sneaky little pug named Tiny Tim, who runs around town in a Bah Hum-Pug sweater sharing clues along the way.
The book is full of clues, hints, and a few red herrings. I kept changing my mind about who I thought the murderer was. The reveal of the culprit did make sense, although I wouldn't have minded a few more hints in that direction. This book has a lot of twists and turns, that kept me reading page after page. I found this book to be a quick read, with a well developed plot and great pacing. I am looking forward to reading the next book in the series. If you like a good mystery, one that is hard to solve, wonderful pets, great characters and set in a quirky town, you can't go wrong with this series. I am anxiously waiting to see what the next book in this series brings to Sylvan Creek. The publisher, Kensington Publishing Corporation, generously provided me with a copy of this book upon my request. The rating, ideas and opinions shared are my own.
A Midwinters Tail is the fourth book inBetgany Blake’s Lucky Paws Petsitting series. I always look forward to spending time with Daphne and friends, this book has them preparing for Bark The Halls, the annual town ball. Everything is going well until former high school mean girl,CeCe French, shows up and makes an announcement that could effect everyone I really enjoyed this book, it may just be my favorite in the series. I loved reading about the holiday outfits for the dogs, and Socrates and his “crush”. The mystery was well done, the list of suspects was long, the killer was never on my radar until the reveal. I recommend this for all cozy mystery fans, particularly those that enjoy dogs!
I received a copy of this book from the author, I voluntarily reviewed it.
This is my favorite book in the series so far!! Not only did it contain a naughty pug (like my own) but I am coming to love the characters more and more with each new book. The mystery was well planned and I really enjoy the pet bakery aspect of the series. I will be looking forward to reading more books by this author!!
Pet sitter and baker Daphne Templeton and her Basset Hound buddy Socrates are looking forward to Sylvan Creek's annual Christmas showing of It's a Wonderful Life on the big screen and the Bark the Halls Ball. Daphne's best friend Moxie always enjoys the ball but wants to sit this one out since her high school rival, Celeste "CeeCee" French is returning to town. CeeCee and her poodle Snowdrop create a sensation in town when they arrive. CeeCee not only insults Daphne and Moxie, she makes an important announcement that spells trouble for the town. CeeCee plans to open a flagship all-inclusive pet store in Sylvan Creek. The arrival of a discount chain will potentially put Moxie's spa and their friend Tessie's pet emporium out of business. When Daphne finds CeeCee face down under the town Christmas tree, Moxie becomes the number one suspect. It's well known around town that CeeCee stole Moxie's true love and broke Moxie's heart. Daphne knows Moxie would never hurt another living creature and even Detective Black knows this in his gut. He'll do whatever it takes to help Moxie but it doesn't look good for her. When CeeCee's assistant dumps Snowdrop and an old yearbook on Daphne, she knows she has to break her vow not to try to solve the mystery. Her insight into high school drama may be the only thing that saves Daphne.
I enjoyed this book so much more than the first two. Daphne has matured a lot and this time, she pretty much has Jonathan's permission to snoop because the murder may have something to do with what happened senior year of high school. I especially loved the animal companions in this story. I made my list of suspects, some the same as Daphne's, plus one extra and crossed them off by process of elimination. When it got to the part in the book where I knew the next person must be the killer, I figured out who did it. The cozy Christmas setting is wonderful and just the thing for these dark times. I really wanted to dive right in and visit Sylvan Creek for Christmas. My favorite part of this novel is the growing romance between Daphne and Detective Jonathan Black. It's very swoony. My biggest complaint about this novel is that it's rather long. There are too many suspects and too much rehashing of high school drama. I didn't understand the subplot about the play, either and why Daphne didn't bother to show up on time or know the story. It was just a convenient location for her to either do something stupid, confront a murder suspect and show the quirkiness of the town.
I like Daphne better now she's settled down in her hometown and is putting down roots. She's still a zen philosopher but also more grounded in the real world than she was in the first two books. She still puts human thoughts into Socrates's head but I would probably do that too. I don't get why she's seeing Gabriel, the newspaper owner/editor/reporter. They don't have a connection other than murder. I do like her with Jonathan. She helps him relax and just be a normal guy. His military experience and whatever happened in his past has made him serious and secretive. He doesn't mean to be secretive and he's learning to open up to Daphne a bit more. My guess is he was a "military brat" growing up and then went into the military himself so he isn't used to dealing with emotions. He's learned a lot about the town and the people and is open to using his gut instinct to solve murders. I like how he teases Daphne because he knows she can laugh at herself and not to be mean. Jonathan is not only sexy and charming, he's a romantic at heart. I can't say I didn't swoon a few times when he was on page. I just don't understand Moxie's crush on him when everyone knows he and Daphne are into each other. Newcomer Ivy Dunleavy is a seamstress and tailor. She seems a little over eager for clients but I bet she and Moxie will hit it off well. Ivy seems to be an amazing designer.
Moxie annoyed me less in this novel. She's still vintage obsessed but it's understated and charming because it's Christmas. She doesn't gossip anymore and even keeps a secret from Daphne about Jonathan even if she only suspects something. Moxie is a little naive though and trusting. What I don't like is how she let some boy from high school break her heart and why she's still carrying a torch for him. The animal companions in this novel are so utterly adorable. Socrates is relaxed but enjoys playing with Artie, his best canine buddy. Then Socrates falls in love. It's hokey and unrealistic but I ended up getting into the idea and thought it was sweet. It works because it's Christmas and who doesn't love a feel-good romance at Christmas? Artie, the one-eared, drooling Chihuahua captured my heart. He's so goofy and crazy! In second place is newcomer Tiny Tim, a rescue Pug with escape tricks to rival Houdini. What I didn't enjoy about Tiny Tim is what a convenient plot device he is. In last place is Snowdrop, the Poodle. She acts like a typical Poodle- snooty and mean. Then as she gets to know Socrates and trust Daphne, she starts to relax. I REALLY like how her story shows how with gentle care and love, a "mean" dog can become a lovely and loving companion.
Daphne's human family appears here too but not in any major capacity. Her sister Piper is less haughty and tough. She's in love and her boyfriend, Roger, sounds like a great guy. Sure he's a boring professor but he knows how to handle Mrs. Templeton. Maeve Templeton is awful. She's the complete opposite of her daughters, shallow and snobby. She wants everything to be "high class" and can't even use the word "bathroom" or use the bathroom meant for plebians. I couldn't stand having a mother like that.
There are murder suspects aplenty in this novel. CeeCee French was the high school mean girl. She went beyond typical mean girl behavior into malicious and deceitful territory. She didn't change as an adult and became just as mean and spiteful. She was narcissistic and jealous of anyone else's success. It's no wonder she was killed. Jeff Updegrove is Daphne's number one suspect. He also went to Sylvan Creek high school but claims he doesn't remember Daphne. He is now CeeCee's assistant/Chief Operating Officer. What he does is a mystery but he supports CeeCee's business. Yet, he dumps the poodle on Daphne along with a yearbook. Is he daring her to find out why he killed his boss? Leaving town doesn't make him seem very innocent. It's always the meek assistants isn't it? Mike Cavanaugh, Moxie's high school love, returns to town after mysteriously disappearing after high school. He is secretive about his past and what happened in high school. Daphne spotted Mike around town at the time of CeeCee's announcement and when her body was found. Why has he returned to town now? Did he come back to get revenge on CeeCee? Yet he's taken in a mischievous rescue pug so he CAN'T be a bad guy! Another high school classmate, Brett Pinkney, stayed in town when everyone left. He runs his family's tree farm and is anti-social. He gives me the creeps lurking around town. Daphne also spies him with what COULD be the murder weapon. Brett dated CeeCee in high school off and on. Did she break his heart?
Also on the list is Ms. Bitsy Bickleheim, a former high school teacher turned barista. She's normally very klutzy but when she hears CeeCee is returning to town she has an unusual reaction. Ms. Bickleheim seems very intent on getting Daphne into the community theater production of A Christmas Carol and seeing Daphne alone. Knowing Daphne is accident prone, she has a costume designed to make Daphne trip and fall. Another suspect Daphne knows well is Norm Alcorn, hotelier and president of the Chamber of Commerce. She doesn't think he's a murderer but he MAY have threatened her. He doesn't appreciate the sensational news stories about all the murders and wants Sylvan Creek to be known as a pleasant destination and great place to live. His attitude is shocking and his behavior towards Daphne made me suspect him. I figured out his motive long before Daphne did. If she had bothered to ask Gabriel about what he knew about CeeCee she could have figured it out.
This book contains some pet treat recipes I haven't seen before. I wish I had a furkid to try them out on. I am eager to read the next book in the series to see how Daphne and Jonathan's relationship progresses.
Loved this book! I always love reading about the adventures of Daphne and her gang...they never fail to entertain and this book is no exception. Great mystery keeps you guessing. Can't wait to see where this series leads.
A Midwinter’s Tail Lucky Paws Petsitting Mystery, Book #4 Bethany Blake 5+ Stars

To bark or not to bark . . .

Review:
This is such a great book (and series). The characters are well rounded and well developed. I really enjoy Moxie, she is quirky and adorable. I like the friendship that exists between her and Daphne. Her mother irritates me, she is not a very loving person, which I am sure was the author’s intention. Things are moving along well with Detective Black, they are getting much closer. They do not irritate each other as much, which I take as a good sign. The animals are so great in this book and add so much to the story. With their distinct personalities and their funny antics, they had me laughing out loud. And I love the way Daphne is always talking to them and asking their opinions.
The writing style flows smoothly and the book is an easy read. With the author’s descriptions, Sylvan Creek, Pennsylvania, came to life in my mind and it is a place that I would like to visit. The mystery was carried on well throughout the entire book and it was not easy to solve. There were enough red herrings thrown in, which made me second guess myself a few times before the killer reveal.
If I could, I would give this book more than 5 stars, I thought it was that good. I would highly recommend this book, and series, to anyone who enjoys a well crafted cozy mystery. Read the whole series, you will be happy that you did.
I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book provided by the publisher, Kensington Books, and NetGalley, which I greatly appreciate.
AudioBook Review: Stars: Overall 4 Narration 4 Story 4
It’s been a few books span between my read of the first in this series and this title, and Daphne has built her Lucky Paws Petsitting into a thriving business in the pet-indulgent town of Sylvan Creek. The little town has several pet-centric businesses and events, and they are currently gearing up for the Bark the Halls Ball where everyone (man and beastie) will be decked out in their finest attire and dance the night away. This year plans to be even more special than usual as former resident Celeste French is returning to visit having made a big national name with her pet care franchises. But word leaks out that Sylvan Creek just may be her next new site, and people aren’t happy as her national store would increase traffic and notice, but more than likely take trade from the many pet-themed businesses in town already.
Soon, discussion moves from the potential of a national big-box chain in town to ‘who did it’ as Celeste is found murdered and left under the town’s Christmas tree, discovered by Daphne and her current ‘flame’ Jonathan, a detective. Stabbed through the heart with a pair of shears, shears that seem to match a pair stolen from the Spa and Paw, a local groomer owned by Daphne’s friend Moxie. Daphne is warned off the case by Jonathan, but she’s intrigued, she keeps finding clues left at her feet, and just how does anyone expect her to not puzzle things out, particularly when she knows her friend Moxie is innocent, yet still a suspect? Of course, Socrates is always there to listen and provide his feedback, mostly consisting of adoring looks, a solid warm body to cuddle with and a sympathetic ear – how could Daphne not talk things over with him. And that is everything – from the day’s scenedule to her moving at a snail’s pace relationship, to this latest mystery. Full of twists, a couple of red herrings and always the pets – new dogs to meet, old ones to renew the relationship and everyone in the story caring for, if not catering to, their pets.
Narration for this story is provided by Elise Arsenault, I seem to encounter her work with the ‘animal-involved’ tales. Here she presented a voice and speaking style for Daphne that felt appropriate and was nuanced with emotion, with tone and volume adjustments that fit the events. Her ability to provide distinct voices for the characters as well as allow the story to take center stage helped to keep me engaged and following along with the story.
I received an AudioBook copy of the title from Tantor Audio for purpose of honest review. I was not compensated for this review: all conclusions are my own responsibility.
I adore this series and was thrilled to receive this Christmas Themed next in series for review. My opinions are my own. As a long time fan of this series I recommend the entire series to new readers and for all animal lovers that enjoy cozy mysteries featuring pets ! A Midwinter's Tale is the fourth book in the Lucky Paws Petsitting Mystery series by Bethany Blake. The cover drew me in immediately and has the perfect Christmas time theme. This next in series does feature a festive atmosphere and Christmas themed foods and fun. Our protagonist petsitter and pet bakery owner, Daphne Templeton is busy preparing for the holidays with Christmas theme pet treats in her bakery and has more petsitting clients as people leave for the holidays.. Just as she is enjoying the holiday and her busy schedule her best friend Moxie is accused of murder. She feels it’s up to her to prove Moxie’s innocence. She has proven to be a very adept investigator in the past and knows she can solve this mystery and free her friend from suspicion. The suspects abound and soon she is on the right track of the suspect. This sleuth had so many twist and turns I was unable to figure out the ending which is always enjoyable for this avid reader ! The animals here are delightful and integral to the story as the people. The author knows animals and has beautifully described each pet in such a endearing way that captures the heart of her readers. The Basset hound Socrates and Chihuahua Artie are important parts of this series and I love reading about them in each book.
The town of Sylvan Creek is a wonderful part of this series with the pet-themed store names and events that the author creates, such as the Bark the Halls Ball. Ms. Blake has a fantastic popular series here and I look forward to the next in series and returning to Sylan Creek.. Thank you to the publisher for the opportunity to review this wonderful next in series with a delightful Christmas theme. I loved it.
A Midwinter's Tail is the fourth book in the Lucky Paws Petsitting Mystery series! We meet up again with Daphne Templeton during the holiday season. Daphne and Moxie’s high school nemesis is back in town and wants to open a large-chain pet-store in town, which rubs many people the wrong way. When their nemesis is murdered, Moxie is the prime suspect. So, once again, Daphne and Socrates must catch the real killer and prove Moxie’s innocence.
I LOVE this series! Like I LOVE IT!! This series has made it onto my top-ten favorite cozy’s list. I look forward to every new installment, and this one didn’t disappoint! It was wonderfully awesome/amazing!
I’m so invested in these characters, from Daphne to her best friend’s pet mouse, Sebastian. I’ve really connected with every recurring character. And I just love how well-rounded and interesting everyone is, and how they feel like everyday people. And the more I read this series, the closer I get to them. They feel like real friends.
The mystery itself was SO good! Just like the previous books in the series, it was very well-plotted and organized. Very suspenseful and kept me guessing until the end.
Overall, I loved this book. It was captivating, delightful and simply cozy. It’s literally the perfect cozy mystery. I cannot wait until I can get my hands on that next installment.

The Lucky Paws Petsitting Mystery series is a fun, happy set of books that any cozy lover will cherish. A Midwinter’s Tail is no exception. This is a fast-paced, enjoyable read in a wonderful pet-friendly town with tons of memorable moments and plenty of twists and turns that will keep the reader guessing.
Daphne is a great character who is very much like many small-town shopkeepers. She is always trying to keep her head above water, and always wanting to help her fellow business neighbor. Unfortunately, she keeps having to find killers to help, and that lands her in trouble much of the time. Daphne loves and cares for her neighbors and friends and no matter what the cost to her personally, she will find a way to solve a murder to protect them.
The characters in this story are truly dedicated to animals and their businesses. They are very robust, lifelike and pleasant. Even the murderer is not a horrible person, just one that has some issues that just about anyone could understand but still doesn’t excuse murder. However, the victim is not someone anyone would like and has no redeeming value.
A Midwinter’s Tail is a page-turner. The writing is smooth without being too formulaic. The characters are believable, the location perfect and the murder unique. The dog treat recipes in the back are worth getting the book by themselves. This book can stand on its own without the need for a lot of background information. I highly recommend this series and this individual book to anyone who loves pets, and a wonderful who-done-it.
*I received a free copy of this book which I voluntarily chose to write an honest review for.
I was dying to get my hands on this book and I was not disappointed once I did. It is Christmas time in Sylvan Creek which comes with a slew of traditions. This town is so full of charm and life you will wish you were there. The pet friendly attitude is the cherry on top of the cake. Daphne is enjoying the festivities when a blast from the past rolls into town making an announcement the rattles them all but before they can adjust she is found dead with Moxie as the main suspect. Daphne starts asking questions while juggling her many tasks. Lots of surprises leading to the finale. Perfect for fans of pets and cozies. I loved it so I give it 5/5 stars.
A deliciously twisty tale of murder and trickery blended with a healthy dose of cats and dogs! Daphne Templeton has become one of my favorite protagonists. A devoted animal lover with a head for details, she has a sharp nose for sniffing out the truth, especially when her best friend’s liberty is at risk. The touches of romance warmed me to the core, and the ending offered a promise of future delights. The next book looks equally enticing, so I’m adding it to my list!
I really enjoyed A Midwinter's Tail. I had won it through a goodreads giveaway. The characters are unique and the town is small, but there is no lack of excitement! I wish all towns were like Sylvan Creek, and allowed you to take your dogs (or in Moxie's case rat) everywhere. Budding romance, old highscool friends and enemies, a couple of murders, and man's best friend, what more could you want from a book?
