My aim in this new undertaking, which involves almost more labour than My Life and Words of Christ, has been and will be to bring all that I can gather from every available source to bear on the illustration of the Scriptures. I should like to supply what Doctor Arnold used to long for A people's hand-book to the Bible; not a dry series of papers, but a pleasant, attractive illumination of its pages by the varied lights of modern research and discovery. Whether or not I have succeeded in this first volume, must be left to the reader to determine.

About the author
Cunningham Geikie
138 books1 followerJohn Cunningham Geikie was a minister and author. He worked as a Presbyterian missionary in Canada. In 1860 he returned to the U.K. and held a Presbyterian minister position at Sunderland and at Islington Chapel. In 1876 he was ordained deacon in the Church of England and priest next year. He was curate of St. Peter's, Dulwich (1876–79), rector of Christ Church, Neuilly, Paris (1879–81), vicar of St. Mary's, Barnstaple (1883–85), and vicar of St Martin at Palace, Norwich (1885–90). In 1890 he retired for health reasons.
