There's nothing better than being asked to be in a play by the director. Even if it's after auditions were held and it's for a bit part, it's nice to be wanted!
I was lucky enough to be asked to play Mark in Melissa Ross's Thinner Than Water & so I'll be in my first show in ~2 years since my wife got pregnant! Figured I should read through the play before the cast got together next week to read through the play.
Thinner Than Water follows three estranged half-siblings who get back together as their shared father grows ill. The three do not get along with each other and tensions overflow into their individual lives. The play is simple, usually having 2-4 actors in each scene but the story is not. Ross does great slowly dribbling out exposition naturally leaving readers wondering what's happening for several pages. I was a little surprised by the ending—there was something I thought Cassie would do/say that wasn't explicitly said/done (but perhaps this thought is an ambiguity Ross left for audience members to discuss after the lights came back up)...
I can't wait to see what our director is going to do with this & I'm so thrilled to be back on stage!
a really lovely, sad, and funny portrait of an estranged family struggling through tragedy and how it affects the rest of the siblings lives. great characters and dialogue and moves at a good pace, found some good material here for future auditions perhaps
Biased but did not enjoy - writing did not feel natural and the story was all over the place in an attempt to create a air of familial chaos that falls flat on its face
