Turning Point

Rate this book
“At turning points, we face decisions. Here, three of the Castle's immortals - Lightning, Simoon and Comet - relate pivotal moments of their lives. A deadly chariot race forces Lightning to choose between his lover and his family; Simoon must decide what value he places on friendship, and Jant faces the consequence of his decisions to betray others. As a bonus, three short tales of the immortals' deeds are extracted from the Histories written by Simoon. But which are myth, and which reality?”

‘Turning Point’ contains two stories never before available in english: ‘Velocity’ and ‘The Wheel of Fortune’; and two stories published for the first time: ‘The Bliss of Solitude’ and ‘Tales of the Immortals’.

It's been a while since Fair Rebel came out, so I needed a bit of a Swainston fix - and Turning Point provided it!

Made up of three short stories (and some bonus extras) it tells the story of three key points in character's lives - Lightning, Jant and Simoon. I didn't remember Simoon (The Treasurer) from the original novels, but enjoyed all three. Lightning tells of a disastrous chariot race with one of his brothers, Simoon tells of a friendship, and Jant of the time he killed Felicia. Being a huge Jant fan, I was particularly interested to read his story - it's no secret that he was part of a particularly vicious gang once, so it was fascinating to read more.

Swainston's writing is instantly immerse, crystalline-sharp and always a pleasure. Even in short-form, she conjures a compelling and vivid world; I look forward to reading more in the future!

What a delicious morsel this was!

This is a collection of key moments from the lives of our "Castle" protagonists. All the three main stories are all as different as are the three characters we get to see here: Lightning, Jant and Simoon. I say main stories because there's some delightful bonus story-telling from them at the end as well, or at least some Eszai bickering!

In some ways I'd say by a hair my joint favourites would be the insights into Lightning and Simoon. Lightning's story is breathtakingly exciting whilst revealing much about his earlier life and his family struggles. Simoon who's story is a very internal view from the savant treasurer (and the sharpest turning point!) which will always make me wonder how he's seeing things when we (hopefully) see him again from Jant's perspective. I do of course always love a Jant story though, and his fills in a decisive moment that we've heard about before, but now we get to see it up close.

In short: if you are reading the Castle books I heartily recommend this. Really all these stories are perfectly balanced to make reading the novels more rewarding, having seen these peeks into their charcters. If you are not reading these books, go and read them and in the meantime get a copy of this anyway for when you are finished.
