Meet Vincent Steele. Successful lawyer, devoted husband and loving father. On the surface he has it all, but if you dig deeper, nothing is as it seems. Meet Shelby Hunter. Coming from a different walk of life, she faces her own struggles. Flirtation turns into lust. Lust turns into longing, and longing breaks boundaries. She makes him come alive. He makes her feel treasured. Neither of them planned for any of this to happen and all I ask is for you to read their story before judging them too harshly.
It's been quite some time that I've cried while reading a book, but the author grabbed me by my heart strings and tugged hard on them. The end is everything I was to scared to hope for. Despite what the story is about I came to love Vincent, came to understand Shelby, and learned a few things about myself along the way. What more could you ask of a book? ❤
So a middle aged man in a bad marriage falls for his younger secretary. Sound familiar? Vincent asks not to judge him in the beginning of this story...yeah not gonna happen. Couldn't get into any of the characters due to the flow of this one. I felt like I was reading a court transcript. Very robotic. And the editing left a lot to be desired. Train wreck for sure.
This book didn't get one star due to the cheating aspect of the story - I wasn't a fan of the story but wanted to read why Vincent had to defend his reason's for entering into an affair. I'm afraid this was a tedious read, it lacked passion and was more of a narration from each side telling their side of the Affair.
I found this to be a very interesting book that was really enjoyable. The story line has a roller coaster of emotions throughout and brings tears to your eyes at times. The characters are intense and determined to grab what happiness they can find, but there is also a vulnerability. Look forward to reading more from this talented author.
Im sitting on my settee and not sure what to say, this book is fantastic and it does make you think about your own marriage. I’ve been married 38 years this year and talked to my husband about this book as when your married for 26 years and you don’t want to spend time with your husband anymore there is a problem . His wife seemed very cold so I don’t blame him for having an affair felt a bit sorry for Shelby at times as he seemed torn all the time. I would have liked for the ending to go on a bit to see how they got on well done to the author she did a fab job with this story . Would recommend to read it ASAP 5+ stars
C.L Knopf - The Affair A new standalone novel from C.L. Knopf about two people affair that grows into love. The forbidden love story is very well thought out and flows seamlessly throughout the book. Author’s writing is lovely and shows well other relationships that impact both characters and their decisions.
This story about the green-eyed stunning Shelby Hunter, a young secretary hired by the Vincent Steele’s 6 people paralegal firm to help them in the office. Vincent is in his fifties handsome, intelligent, very settled man who for the past 26 years has been married to Michelle.
But Vincent and Michelle’s relationship is no longer satisfying, cold and distant, an act they both put up in front of other people. Feeling disconnected from marriage and yearning to be desired, loved Vincent notices young woman who makes his blood hot and heart pump. Vincent seamlessly falls in love with a young secretary whose smile and witty exchanges put a smile on his face and makes his day.
Ms. Hunter’s captivated by Vincent as well. He is another woman’s man, she should lust after about 15 years older man. After the broken relationship, she started to notice the man who is a caring gentleman and the connection between those two flares. One thing led to another, and both got involved in affair behind the wife’s back. I would lie if the plot weren’t challenging for me to accept, but their story was sweet and not malicious.
To give Vincent credit, he tried numerous times to reconnect with his wife. Although I wished Michelle caught them before it all ended. I really wanted to see their emotional turmoil and guilt a little bit more drama to torture them and show their struggle. I wanted to see the angst to make their relationship more intense. But it is just me. Perhaps because they both played this affair very cleverly this didn’t happen. This story is about growing feelings, intimacy and connection that led them to acknowledge that this affair has no future.
In a way, Shelby came into his life when he probably needed a shove or push making a decision that was out of his comforts zone. It is a sweet, beautifully written romantic read with mature and likable characters.
Wow this is really an amazing story. Vincent and Shelby are great characters. I will say I was a little worried about the subject of the story, but after reading it, it's perfect. This journey they go on is very heartfelt. You will absolutely feel everything with this story. Love how something I live 3 blocks from is mentioned in this book. Thanks for that lol. The writing and flow of this book is done amazingly well. Highly recommend this book.
Not to sound like a book snob but I don't normally read self-published books by indie authors. The reason is that the ones I've tried aren't well written and don't have well-developed characters and not-the-best storylines. However, I have found that C.L. Knopf is one of the very few exceptions I've come across. Having read one of her other books, Bali, I know she can write a good story and has characters that are dimensional and storylines that keep me reading late into the night.
This story has alternating POVs which allows readers to get to know Vincent and Shelby. The chapters switch back and forth between the two and this keeps the story moving. I liked that the relationship between the two has a natural progression and wasn't just about the physical aspect. This gave the story a more realistic feel.
I wasn't sure I was going to like the characters as they are engaging in an affair (hence the title) but the way the story is written I got to know them and a bit about their lives. Even though I may not agree with what Vincent did it was easy to understand how he got to the point he did. Shelby was easy to like too even though I don't agree with what she did.
I enjoyed this book and will be looking for more from this author. I recommend this book to fans of contemporary fiction.
I received a free copy of this book from the author and was not required to write a review. All opinions are mine.
This was the first book I have read by this author and it was absolutely phenomenal. The story of Vincent and Shelby was a tough one for me to read for the fact that I’m going through a hard part in my marriage right now.
See how Vincent and Shelby connected and tried to stay away but they couldn’t deny the chemistry they had; you could feel it coming off the pages.
This book will definitely pull you in and have you in tears. Have tissues ready girls you are definitely gonna need them.
This was my first read by this author and I'm sorry to say that i didn't really enjoy it. It wasnt the fact it romances an affair, that doesn't bother me. It was just....blah!
The Affair was exactly that. Nothing exciting or adventurous happened in this story and as much as i hate to do this, i found myself skimming through chapters before i died of boredom! I felt like i was reading someone's narrative... the writing was monotone and one-dimensional. Not even the sex was exciting... don't know why some young hot Secretary would want something so vanilla and boring, they couldn't even go anywhere?
As for the "affair" it was so cliche. Secretary and boss have an affair after boss and said wife's marriage has become loveless. I actually can relate with this scenario as my marriage is quite the same (minus the affair lol).
Im at a complete loss understanding how this book earned so many 5star reviews? I would definitely save your money and skip this one altogether.
I rang in 2019 reading The Affair . . . don't judge me.
I just enjoy reading and wanted to try a writer I've never read before and this book was the perfect ending to 2018. I loved this book! I couldn't put it down! Even the neighborhood fireworks couldn't drag me away from reading to the end!
I was just as nervous about their affair as Vincent and Shelby! I was positive his wife, Michelle, had caught on and at some point I was beginning to suspect she was having an affair too! And then when he had to leave his cell phone behind for the boys weekend with his sons? OMG! I couldn't swipe the pages fast enough to find out if Michelle knew his passcode!
I won't reveal anymore to avoid spoiling it for others . . . except to say I'm going on an extensive search for more books by C.L. Knopf.
I won this book in a competition on FB and it’s the first book I’ve read by this author. I read it in one sitting and I did enjoy it. I thought the subject matter was sensitively handled and looked at what can happen in a marriage and what circumstances can lead to an affair. It also showed the downside of being ‘the other woman’ and I did sympathise with Shelby. The wife seemed quite cold and more interested in keeping up appearances and I liked the twist at the end though I felt the epilogue could have been longer. This book will be controversial as a lot of people will view an affair as a hard limit, but I would suggest you give this a go and then make your mind up
Overall, this is a good book, a little unrealistic at times; the girlfriend is a little too understanding. That didn't ring true; also if he was so in love with her, why didn't he call her when his divorce was final? So, the book could have a sequel...This is why I don't like series.
This story is full of surprises and suspense. I loved how realistic it is and full of emotion, complications, love and sorrow. It had me cry tears of sadness as well as tears of joy.
