Before you read the review for this book I want to let you know there is a newer version that comes with audio. If you ever have the opportunity to purchase a book that comes with audio

Frédéric's books are a good option for beginning and lower-intermediate learners. His easy to follow stories expose readers to vocabulary in the context of common activities like: taking a course, shopping, spring cleaning, etc. Although all of the stories can be read independent of each other, Frédéric incorporates vocabulary learned in one story into the others. In addition, the in-text English glossary significantly reduces the number of times you have to pull out your French/English dictionary.

The audio is provided in two speeds slow and normal and is read by a native Frenchman -- Frédéric. The slow speed is almost painfully slow. However as you are trying to develop the ability to distingquish sounds, translate words, and interpret meaning through context sloooow is good. The normal speed is not the mind boggling, incomprehensible babble we Americans think of as French. It's closer to the average speed of an English speaker.

The great thing about books that come with audio is that you can work every aspect of learning the language: vocabulary, written and oral comprehension, as well as pronunciation.

This was a great learning tool to advance my French aural skills. The accompanying mp3 audio was clear and went at a pace that was challenging enough but not too fast for my level (normal and slow speeds are offered). While I wouldn't recommend this for complete beginners, I started this book in the middle of my second college semester of French. Much of the highlighted vocabulary I knew but hearing it reinforced the pronunciation and the book added a lot more vocab to my repertoire. For me, listening to French while reading it is the best way to rapidly learn a language.
