Brent had fallen for the one Dom he couldn't have.

Brent's legendary bad luck when it came to men was undeniable. If there was a wanna-be Dom in a hundred miles, he found them. But even he couldn't have predicted what would happen next. Mixed signals and too much time off won't make it any better, or will it?

Calen had fallen for the one sub he couldn't have.

Calen knew most considered him the seen-them-and-leave-them type of Dom, but how could he stay when he knew they wouldn't understand? When you're a Dom who doesn't match up to stereotypes, can you ever find the right submissive?

This 38,000-word story contains M/m sexual content and BDSM elements. The Bound & Controlled series follows four brothers who are each involved in the BDSM lifestyle in some way as they look for love. Each book features a different brother, but the books are best heard in order. The books are not taboo in nature.her but the books are best read in order. The books are not taboo in nature.

TIME OF AUDIOBOOK DEATH: 50%

This was soooo DISAPPOINTING!!!

I had a tough time getting into this novella—my second by this author.

First, the narrator’s vocal choices for the characters were off. Don’t describe a dialogue as a deep growl when all I can hear is a higher pitched male voice.

Second, one of the MC’s called the other “subby.” Ugh. Every time I heard it, I cringed.

Third, I didn’t care for the characters as they were presented vocally or in dialogue.

One thing I did like was the discussion of stereotypes in the D/s scene about who tops and who bottoms.

Other than that, this book did nothing for me. Perhaps I would have enjoyed it more if I had read it.

A complimentary copy of the audio was provided in exchange for an honest review.

A listened to book 1 (Garrett) as well and I did enjoy that one more than Brent, but part of that is because I didn't feel like I got the chance to really know Brent and Calen. Overall the story was nice and entertaining and it was good to see more of the brothers, especially Garrett and his new sub Wyatt. ;) It's clear the author is leading us to the rest of the brothers who have their own stories, and I am okay with that. When the next story is introduced in the current story, sometimes it's not carried off well, because it ignores the current characters. Personally I found it hilarious when Bryce is being "grilled" by his brother about his clients. It's obvious he has feelings for the Dom and Sub pair, but he appears to be fighting it. I would LOVE the chance to read their story.

As for Brent and Caleb, their relationship started off weird to me because we don't get to fully experience their history on page. I would have preferred it if their scene history had been shown in real time and not in flash backs, and I would also have preferred it when they did come together in present time that there hadn't been so many games between them. They've known each other a long time and certainly should have had a sense already of who they were (in and out of the scene), but they kind of did a dance as if to be getting to know them in this new context.

Kenneth Obi is the narrator for books 1 & 2 and overall I enjoyed his narration, particularly Wyatt's. ;) Since the same narrator did do both books, it was a little hard to differentiate between Garrett and Brent. They both had deep voices and maybe I didn't notice in Garrett's book, but Brent's voice didn't come across as a natural tenor. It felt forced and it really took me out of the story. Caleb's voice though was sweet and I enjoyed hearing him and his inner ramblings, lol.

Narration: 3.5 stars
Story: 3 stars

While this was not my favorite book by Shaw, I really did still like this one. I almost kind of feel like I was listening to a True Account story of a Dom (Calen) and a Sub (Brent) finding their ground together in a new relationship and I didn't feel like I was listening to just a Fictional story.
This book had a really long slow burn of a buildup and you get to actually "know the couple" as they learn each others quirks, kinks, likes and dislikes, all before they got into any actual scenes, which I think was a really good thing for this couple in particular. They needed that extra time to secure their relationship together, since they are not the "norm" when it comes to D/S partnership and they both had some reservations and insecurities. This story was definitely on the lighter side of BDSM, if you are looking for some extreme scenes your not going to get it with this book, its on the sweeter side of the spectrum.
Audio - I have to say.... The Audio did kind of throw me off at first. Only because Calen and Brent don't have the normal roles that you would typically see in D/S relationships. And Kenneth really made that clear in the narration for the two men. Brent the Sub had a deeper Gruffer more gravelly voice and Calen the Dom had a more soft spoken, lighter voice. But Kenneth put a good amount of emotion in where it was needed for the roles of every character in the story and he's becoming one of my more favorite narrators. Great job with this one and I look forward to the next book in the series.

Definitely not as great as the first one.

I was so bored with this story it wasn’t even funny.
These books all start off pretty quickly with the main couple together and the rest is development of the relationship and exploration of the kink.

Calen and Brent both work at Brent’s family’s insurance company and they’ve been friends for quite a while. That’s why they’re both confused when they go to the club together and suddenly see each other with different eyes..

I love me a good submissive character and a Dom that’s all controlling to put the sub at ease. Unfortunately this book doesn’t go there. These men are friends and despite Calen being a Dom and Brent being a sub, this never really felt as if that was the case for me. Yes, they do play some BDSM games, but I just didn’t buy it.

And OMG, if I read about Calen calling Brent ‘subbie’ one more time, I would have thrown my Kindle out the window. Subbie is so not a sexy BDSM endearment. I get that these guys were friends first so ‘boy’ might feel a bit weird to them, but oh God, not ‘subbie’….

I can’t really recommend this one. The first book was way better.

I don't know why I read this. I didn't really like the first one, because I thought it was boring. This one was boring and weird.

The dom in the story. Man... I don't even remember if Brent was the dom or the sub. Sub? I think. Whatever. The dom, whichever one he was, called the sub 'subbie'. So that's not sexy. At all. But then when he would talk to him, it was with this weird tinge of almost... baby talk.

“It looks like my little subbie wants to be touched. Does my little sub want more? Do you want me to play with your cock?”

Eee... no. No one wants that. Well... there are probably people who do, but I'm not one of them. It's a shame. I read it because I actually liked the setup for this one. A sort of joking moment at the club turns serious and leads two guys who've only ever been just friends to seeing each other in a whole new way. That's a great setup!

The execution though. Eee.

This one felt a bit rushed - friends to lovers but for some reason I couldn’t buy it. For me these guys felt way more vanilla and the D/s references really didn’t stick. I’m enjoying the family vibe and the connections. An enjoyable series - relaxed and low angst

Second book of The Bound & Controlled series. Brent and Calen are our next sexy couple. These guys have known each other for years but haven't looked at each other, other than FRIENDS. Things changed one night at the club and they don't know how to handle it.

Having feelings for your best friends brother is a no no but in his strange world dealing with the brothers, you never know.

2,5 stars. This one didn't really work for me. the whole "subby" thing annoyed me so much that it pulled me out of the story every time it was said. Normally I liked Kenneth Obi, but I thought his narrating choices with this one were bad. Brent didn't have the same "thinking" voice as he did "speaking" voice, so a lot of the time I was unsure if it was Brent thinking or Kalen talking...

After reading Garrett, I was excited to find out what would happen with his brothers, and Brent was a fantastic followup! It can be read as a standalone, but I'd recommend starting at the beginning of the series with Garrett.

I don't want to spoil any major plot points, but I loved that this book had a Dom (Calen) who was different than what you usually expect from a Dom, and Brent was a perfect fit for him. There's a lot of tease leading up to them actually doing a scene together, but it was HOT throughout regardless! Their chemistry is off the charts!

It was fun to see Wyatt and Garrett from the first book, and you can definitely see the pieces falling together for the other brothers to find their happiness, too. I can't wait for their books! This author excels at making the characters seem real and making the reader care about and root for them.

Hmmm

Ok I really enjoyed Garrett and Wyatt's story but this was one I found to be very dull, nothing really happened. The word subbie and sub were so overused I started to skip some dialogue and then ended up skipping it pages as found it very uninteresting sorry

Not as strong as the first book in the series, I felt like. It was friends to lovers but I just didn't get the connection between the two, it didn't come across as passionate and needy after what they thought was unrequited emotion. Also, I have a hard time being serious when the sub is called "subbie" (or "subby" - I listened to this in audiobook so I'm not sure how it was spelled).

I received an audiobook in exchange for an honest review.

I haven't read the first book. And while I don't think that played a very big part in my not liking this book, it definitely didn't help.

These two MC work together and are friends. They have a whole history together that is not on the page. At the start of this book we are "told" about an incident between the two that changed things between them and had them looking at each other differently.

Honestly, it was a good setup. But the writing just did not work for me.

In a nutshell, their relationship moves super fast. Whatever. They have a history, I get it...but then we have to deal with Calen's Dom persona towards Brent, which verges on baby talk, and this is not an age play scenario. It's awful. A little creepy. And so un-sexy that every one of the 28 times he calls Brent, "Subbie" I cringed and could not take anything that happened seriously.

Good grief. I’d forgotten just how much I HATED the nicknames this author uses. There is nothing wrong with continuing to use a person’s name just because you’re in a relationship. And Subbie? Really? That’s what you’re going with?!? Every utterance tossed me right out of the story. I decided to reread this series after reading the first book of the new spin-off. I’d forgotten how annoying I found some of these stories. Oh well.

Loved the untraditional D/s relationship. Brent didn't look like a traditional sub, and while Calen liked being in charge, he didn't like to top. They both had trouble in the past finding understanding partners, but together they were perfect.

I didn't click with this story. It felt rushed and there were too many times where I was confused, as if I'd been missing some vital information.

The characters were somewhat juxtaposed from the norm, which was interesting to read, but didn't really wow me, in general.

2.5⭐'s.
The only reason I read this book was because of how there was a bottom Dom, which I was really excited for. But that was the only relatively interesting thing in the entire story ; the rest was extremely boring. And it didn't really help that the sex scene was right at the end of the story, so I just skimmed through the entire book to get to that part. 😕

Right, this one was barely 3 stars ⭐️⭐️⭐️
I don’t think there is enough angst or any big climax (Tihi) in the story. This one felt like a whole bunch of exposition, without a satisfying plot twist or problem to overcome.

I am loving this series....I have loved all of Shaw's books but I think this is pretty high up on the list and the main reason is simple....Calen the Dom...bottoms....Oh boy...My weakness...A top that bottoms.....Calen and Brent are perfect together and just what each other needs...These are pretty short quick reads but filled with just enough to feel the connection with each couple..Am looking forward to Grant's book next and then Bryce who I'm thinking may be getting two guys x

Love the fluid writing (I spotted a few grammar and spelling mistakes, bit they didn't distract me from the story), loved the interaction between the two MC's, loved the BDSM element, but the story was way too short. It had the potential for so much more, like the other books in this series. I'm sure of they had been full novels I would have given five stars. Now, it feels unfinished and rushed...

Loving this series! (an audio review)

I listened to the first book in the series, ‘Garrett’, then moved right on to ‘Brent’, and I’m so glad I did. These books are stand-alones, but you do get more enjoyment from listening to them in order.

Brent is one of 4 brothers who are all gay and all into the BDSM lifestyle in one capacity or another. Brent’s problem is that he’s a submissive: he derives pleasure from serving a Master. That sounds fine until he actually gets up the courage to approach a Dom. Brent is big, tall, and could easily be mistaken for a Dominant. He’s managed to date every ‘dick’ Dom for 100 miles and has pretty much given up. Then, one night at the BDSM club he attends with his brothers, he has a life-altering experience. Yes, he was supposedly ‘pretending’ to be Calen’s submissive but it felt…perfect.

Problem? Calen works in the office of the insurance company Brent owns with his 3 brothers. Also, Brent’s happy that his brother Garrett has found a submissive and Brenda wants Wyatt, Garrett’s submissive, to feel like part of the family, but it just reinforces that Brent’s alone.

Until his brother sends him home for a week so he can have an attitude adjustment.

The timing is interesting because when Calan shows up hungover the same Monday morning, Garrett also orders him to take the week off to get himself together.

Once the men realize they are both banished from the office, they decide there are worse ways to spend the week than together.

It doesn’t take long for the two men to reconnect on a level beyond friendship. But in order to have a true Master/submissive relationship, they will have to risk their friendship and open themselves completely. Calen, for his part, has reasons to be insecure. His preferences, in the BDSM community, make some people question his legitimacy as a Dom.

I, of course, call BS. Calen should be able to express his preferences sexually in a way that is comfortable for him. Stereotypes and preconceptions have no place in life, let alone in BDSM.

In the end, and Brent are perfect for each other because Brent is as indignant as I am about Calen’s rejection by some previous men he was involved with.

I loved that the relationship was a slow burn with lots of eating and laughter. When things do get hot, it is perfect.

Kenneth Obi narrated the book and each time I listen to him, I enjoy him more and more. His portrayal of Brent is spot-on. Brent has a deep voice, and a calm demeanor. Calen is deliberative as well and that came across. Kenneth carries Wyatt’s southern accent as well as providing a good interpretation of Wyatt’s friend Carter. That’s good, because I suspect Carter is going to get involved with one of the two single brothers. Personally, I can’t wait.

This is book 2 in the Bound & Controlled series by Shaw Montgomery, which centers around four brothers who all fall into the BDSM lifestyle spectrum. For those faint of heart, or extra kinky, take note that there is no intra-family naughtiness. Each book in the series follows a different brother and has recurring side characters. While they are self-contained stories for the most part, reading the books in order is recommended.

As often as we are told not to place things such as sexuality, gender and body type into neatly stereotyped packages, when picturing a dom/sub duo, the image of a large, muscular, cigar-smoking leather daddy towering over his smaller, weaker partner may be what immediately springs to mind.

Brent is a tall, muscular sub who looks more like a dom, and his love interest, and best friend, Calen is a dom who doesn’t fall easily into that role’s mold, either. The twist is a bit of a surprise and a great reminder not to take everything at face value, so there are no spoilers here.

The romance angle revolves mostly around the question of whether Brent and Calen can overcome the awkwardness of being longtime best friends who have suddenly come to see one another in a different light. Kenneth Obi returns as the narrator and again does an excellent, and often arousing, job. With a couple whom readers will be rooting for and even more steamy erotic moments than in the first book, Brent is an excellent sequel to Garrett .

I listened to the audible of this book, Shaw Montgomery does a wonderful job with books in this genre. For someone like me who is not part of the BDSM lifestyle sometimes the books in this genre are hard to read and understand, but this author does a brilliant job of making sure you are able to see both POVs so that you understand the need, desire, and fulfillment of those things from both sides of the coin. This was the second book in this series and I really enjoyed this one. It was interesting to see how two people in the lifestyle who weren't the "cookie-cutter" definitions of their roles were able to fit together and be exactly what the other one needed. I'm so glad we got to see Garrett and Wyatt again too as well as the rest of the brothers, Shaw does a good job of keeping the entire story line going with everyone! I can't wait to see what the next book in this series holds!!!

Kenneth Obi did a 5 star job on the narrating as well. This wasn't the first book I had heard him narrate and it definitely won't be the last :)

Brent is notorious for his bad luck with men and now he has fallen for a Dom who he can't have especially as all he gets is mixed signals from him. Taking time off work is not likely to make it any better. Calen has a problem as he is a Dom who has particular requirements that no one will understand and he is never likely to find a Sub who will understand so he never goes for anything more than a one-night scene. This is made much worse when he has fallen for a sub who he can't have.

I enjoyed this story of the two best friends who wanted each other but assumed that they were not wanted by each other, I liked the explanation of the unusual way that Dom Calen wanted his submissive to act and that Brent was happy to play that role as long as they could be together. I really felt for them both and it was quite emotional when they finally were able to get together before they completely self-destructed. Easy to read, feel and understand. This is a story containing MM mature content containing a BSDM-like D/s relationship.

Brent by Shaw Montgomery
Narrated by Kenneth Obi

I love the fact that these stories deal with the emotional aspect of the lifestyle, and not just the physical part. While I enjoy a racy book, I have to have an emotional connection to the characters. I think Shaw really did a great job making me fall in love with Brent and Calen. I like Calen’s vulnerability, and I was so thrilled that there were no secrets kept in this book, that Calen was up front about who he is and what he wants. His fun, teasing personality is just what Brent responds to.
Narration: Kenneth’s portrayal of Brent and Calen is just…wow. The deep timber of Brent’s voice, the sexy slide of Calen’s just draw me into a story I already loved. And I just melt when Calen calls Brent subbie. There is nothing that brought me out of the story performance-wise and I really enjoyed the book, and Kenneth’s superb voice acting.
