She won't give up. He'll never surrender. Will their need for each other overcome their determination?
Zver is on a rampage. A rival thane has kidnapped his son and sabotaged his work for the Dominion. But he won't fail. He won't fall. They call him Thanemonger for a reason. Not only will he retrieve his son, but he'll seize the battleship he's wanted for years and cement his superior status in the Dominion. Just as he executes his ruthless plan, an alluring human woman appears and changes everything.
Seph survived being abducted by aliens, and now she's determined to get home to her young son. Her plan: find a spaceship, return to Earth. Simple, but then she meets the domineering Thanemonger. He offers her sanctuary, but only if she complies with his demands. Now Seph must find a way to fall in line without falling for the sexy alien who has sworn to see her safely home.
Thanemonger is a science fiction romance with action elements, light humor, tender moments, and steamy close encounters. Contains explicit themes and is intended for adults only. No cheating. No cliffhangers. Characters battle for their hard-won HFN.
Bex loves to read all kinds of romance: science fiction, shifter, fantasy, regency, contemporary...(Seriously, all of it!) Currently she writes SFR and Fantasy/PNR. Her writing style—a mixture of action, humor, tenderness, and heat—features worlds and characters that captivate her readers.
Terrific follow-up to Sarda. In this story, McLynn expends some effort on side characters like Zver's son and his brother Therion with wonderful results. Good humor level, sci-fi surprises, solid action, practical characters with some steam, and this is a terrific entry into the SFR world! I definitely want to read more from Bex McLynn!
I'm pretty picky when it comes to SF books and I'm always glad to find something that I actually enjoy. It was cute and fun, a fast read and pretty captivating.
The downside, well, it wasn't too special. Still, that doesn't make it bad, not even close. Worth giving a try at least.
If you enjoyed Michelle Diener's Class 5 series, Dark Horse etc, I recommend giving this book a try.
Read through Kindle unlimited and then purchased for my permanent library.
Definitely enjoyed the plot, the premise, the characters. Looking forward to book 2.
Author calls this a Happy For Now (HFN) story because there's more adventures in the works and for the heroine a huge unresolved issue. No cliffhanger. One hero and one heroine, no love triangles, no reverse harem. Don't let the HFN keep you from reading this.
Not a typical alien abduction science fiction romance. By the end of the story the heroine still knows little of the how, why and when of her abduction. Part of the focus for book 2 will be the search for other abductees.
Enjoy the role of the ships and the academy for women with a talent. Anticipate expansion of these ideas in future books.
The characters are wonderful. Even the ones that don't get lots of screen time still have personality. The hero, his brother and son catch and hold your interest. The heroine is a survivor who is trying to achieve her goal while figuring out the new worlds.
A great read, looking forward to more in this universe. Stalking amazon, facebook and the author's blog so I don't miss book 2.
I really liked this book! I can't wait for the next book!
I immediately decided to read it when a review recommended it to people that like the Class 5 series, which I love. The book did have a similar feel but was original. I really enjoyed the idea of ancient alien tech that only human women can control. It leaves so much potential for fun exciting adventures in future books. For whatever reason, I love books where the heroine is a human woman from our time just thrown into an alien culture.
Loved it. Great fun, romantic and adventurous with not too much sex. Very appealing characters.
When is Therion's book coming out?? And I'm glad that Thane and Seph get another book. Their story is far from over. Can't wait till Thane and Rannik meet Xander!
This was fun! I had read the prequel Sarda, so I was already comfortable with this universe. Although this involves a kidnapped human female, it does not exactly follow the "Mars Needs Women" trope. Our heroine isn't young or weak, and she has a hidden talent, which causes all sorts of troubles. The bad guys are bad, the wise ones are useless, and the hero is too big to fit through the door. Everything was just a little OTT, but not a lot. It kept the story jumping without being annoying. The sex scenes were straightforward and enjoyable.
I liked the characters and it was an interesting world. But I don’t like how technical so much of it was. The author obviously put a lot of work and thought into the world she’s built but it was almost TOO sci fi for me. I was struggling to wrap my head around the idea of a ship having a soul as well as all of the alien terms. The ending was a HFN which was fine but it means I have to read more of the series to get to the HEA and I’m not sure I want to do that.
Such a fun, heated, and humorous book! Really enjoyed this and the characters. Zver and Seph were wonderful together, and throwing Rannik into the mix, a son of Zver’s, helped connect them even more. Therion was also a wonderful addition and I can’t wait for his book! He was funny and the total opposite of Zver, and such a wiseass. I loved him.
A little bit of a spoiler here, so don’t read further if you don’t want to know: Seph never does get her son who is still on Earth. She has two months before the ship she’s bound to makes a bond to Zver, so she has to wait, which makes it a little bittersweet. I’m sure Bex McLynn will be continuing their story a bit in the book to come.
Super fun series, Bex McLynn writes such funny characters within a very serious and engaging story. I adore Therion!!! (I read first Bane and certain events/characters were confusing to me, but I loved that book and I'm definitely going to re-read it right now).
This book/series is not dark, this is the type of read you may enjoy if you need a smart, engrossing plot with a touch of comic relief.
Woo. OK. Thanemonger is getting an uncommon 5★ rating from me. It was such a delight to read. Excellent balance of plot, conflicts, rounded personalities, and some of the funniest motherh*ckers in space. I laughed out loud a half dozen times when reading this one. These are My People, but in space.
Seph wakes up in a space sex doll shop with no idea how she got there. So she does the best she can and finds an easy mark to take her home, teenage cadet Rannick, who is one of the least annoying teen boys ever. Rannick quickly discovers Seph is not what she presented herself as and makes it his mission to protect the cute little alien in the only way he can: hide her until his dad comes to pick him up and pledges the protection of his house. Seph has one mission, get home and back to her son, Xander. She will do whatever it takes to get this done.
Zver--aka Thanemonger--is the head of his house and pissed off. A rival house has somehow conscripted his son from the Academe to a nightmare ship, and now he's off to personally see that Ran makes it home. What should have been a simple mission quickly gets complicated with the discovery of Seph, a beautiful alien who looks like a creature of myth, and the realization that she can connect to the tech on the ancient ships, making her a very valuable commodity. The Thanemonger is known for taking what he wants without mercy and fiercely protecting what is his and his house's; this now includes Seph.
These three make such a great family as it is...
Rannik pounded his own chest, right over his heart, then struck out, hitting Zver in the same spot. "She's ours, Da. I feel it. She's more than house and clade." She was family.
But then there's Therion. The beloved black sheep of his family, Zver's younger brother is more than he appears to be on the outside. He is such a humorous character to read, and peeling back his layers reveals so many good qualities that are missed under a rough exterior. Ther is a master of deception and misdirection; he makes amazing things happen right under your nose. Watching Zver and Therion take the piss out of each other were some of the funniest parts of the book. Feel that brotherly love.
All of the relationships are well done and are believable. They grow in a nice organic way.
Shoot. Even the "bad" guys aren't really black-and-white Bad in this universe. They're all trying to play politics and gain an advantage over the other houses. Some of them are definitely big jerks and less honorable than others, though. Conversely, our hero isn't known for being a benevolent guy himself. He's definitely the villain in a lot of other people's stories.
McLynn did a great job with enough world building to be satisfying but not so much as to be overwhelming; it's a delicate balance that often goes too far one way or the other in this genre. I felt sated with the amount of information given in this book and look forward to future installments, especially to see what becomes of Seph and Zver's Happily For Now. I know what I want to happen, but we'll have to see if that's the way things play out.
Seph has had it. Waking up in a cryo pod, on another world- evidenced by the aliens surrounding her, was scary enough. The voices in her head didn't help any. Forced to hide as a pleasure bot compounded the trauma. Luckily for her she was discovered by a sweet young cadet and not someone who'd take advantage of the situation. Now, 3 weeks later (when the story starts for the readers) she's half starved, scared as hell and still hearing voices. But hope is in sight. Her cadet's dad is coming to pick him up. All she has to do is make it a few more hours, get smuggled out as his "toy" and finally explain to someone with some authority that she's a kidnapped alien who just wants to get home to her kid. Only her luck means that instead she's discovered before all that can happen. Now she's finding out that the voices? Yeah, that's the ship talking to her. A rare ability that means men are going to be arguing over her to join their house. Which sounds great but that also means they aren't looking to let her get back home. Plan A and B have already been shot down. She's working on plan C now.
Spoilers ahead! Do not let the language bog you down. Yeah, the author explains her naming process at the end but she provided no dictionary. Some terms you can sort of infer from context clues. Some you have to read ahead and hope get explained later. Some, well, some you never get lol. But it's ok because this is going to be a series. There's a chance the author will take pity and give us a dictionary at some point. Otherwise, though, the book is awesome. Zver is the alien version of grumpy cat, complete with stripes (paal) and scowls. Rannik is such a sweetie, he's going to be an amazing adult later on. Hopefully this whole xeno thing gets tossed. Therion is a trip. And Vedma...oh, she's the best. Cranky as hell and has her own novella, Sarda. It doesn't have to be read first. In fact it's even better after you've read this one. The next one looks like it's focusing on Therion but hopefully it also gets Seph closer to home. This is a HFN mf story. (I can't say HEA because Seph can't get home yet.) Although the aliens' culture leaves the possibility open for RH themes.
I enjoyed this book . Although, I did feel quite lost with some of the names and phrases. Perhaps a glossary of words could go in the first fretboard instead of the end ..... Josephine has found herself abducted , sold ,and taken again in a short amount of time. A youth Rannik buys her as a sex-bot ( where she has been hiding out -mostly because she looks like them ) Rannik knows she is different but he doesn't know why . He has been sorta kidnapped, and as soon as his Father The Thane comes to rescue him , he can take her with him . Zver is a Thane (still not quite sure what that is . A ruler \commander ?? ) a d he wants the spaceship that his son and brother are on. Wants it bad. Once he sees Seph (Joesephine) , he was her too! Steph and this piece of sh%%$ ship become "connected" , and then this story goes where no man has gone before ! I felt lost most of this book because I didn't understand most of the terminology. Once I found the glossary, I didn't flounder as much . The characters were funny and different, and I Did like it !
A decent generic sci-fi romance. Who ends on a cliffhanger for me, yet the first book completes the story for this couple for now. The following book is about a different couple.
Many sci-fi features and species characteristics were left unanswered or without purpose or origin.
We never learn if she manages to control her gift or not gift, completely, We never learn what awaits her on earth and how much time has passed or if she reunites with Xander again?
Many plot threats were only addressed superficially and therefore it felt often that decisions like going and rescuing other human slaves, came out of the blue. More integration and development would have supported the story.
Wow, this is a 10 star book. It's ScFi fantasy and reminded me of Peter Hamilton's books. Everything is great, the plot, characters, other world settings and the cultural challenges. The h is human, has a child and she is desperate to get back to him. The H is wonderful, a strong leader who cares deeply for this people and her. He's becomes besotted with her, but their relationship is not easy. I liked how much he believed in her and respected her views. All the characters were well developed, very amusing. This book has been written by an extraordinary thinker and talented writer. Yes, I'm gushing, it's just that good.
I couldn't put it down! This was my first time reading a book by this author, but it definitely won't be the last! I've already got Bane waiting to read tomorrow, lol. I loved the depth of this story, but it was so easy to fall into, that I didn't get how complex it was until I was deeply in the middle of it. Zver and Seph make an interesting character dynamic, and their purposes are cross right from the beginning. I kind of hate that we don't know how Seph ended up lost in space, to begin with, and really hope that she can eventually reunite with her Earth family too. Rannick was adorable, I get the whole familial tie in vibe, and the action was steady so that really solidified my interest in the story. Therion is an amazing comic relief element in the story, and he just gives more opportunity for the humor of the story to come through. I loved this book, and I'm so glad that I stumbled onto this new to me author!
Felt a little disoriented at the start of this new world as it was built around the story. Seph is abducted from Earth and hides as a synth bot until purchased. As usual, the biggest baddest Alen takes a shine to her whilst her brain seems to implode with voices in her head and dreadnought spaceships her only form of transport.
This is such a well thought out series and I was gagging for the story of Babe almost before I finished this one!
What makes or breaks a book for me is the dynamic and between the characters, as well as the characters themselves. I loved all the central characters in this book from Seph all the way to fucking Therion (read the book and you’ll get that reference 😉). The banter and all around back and forth between the characters was highly entertaining, and made me laugh and giggle more than once. Oh, and the sexy goodness was plenty steamy!
Can’t wait for the next book in the series! BRING ON FUCKING THERION! ❤️❤️
Hurry up an write the next one! And One of the next books better be about getting her son back! I feel like this story is not complete until then. I also would have liked to have more interactions with the sentient ship. But overall, it was an awesome story.
After reading the pre quell to this book I knew I had to read this one.
Diving straight into the story we meet Seph who has been abducted from earth... we don’t get an actual retelling of her rescue by fleet cadet and Teras alien, Rannik... we get what comes after...
Stationed on a centuries old spacecraft, Prykimis and taken by a absentee Thane, Rannik and Seph await rescue from Ranniks House and Thane Borac. Thane Borac has his own purpose in reducing Rannik, evenmorse so when he discovers that Seph is able to control the Prykimis.
This book was great, filled with story and humour and chemistry between the H and the h. It’s has a refreshingly unique story that is intriguing and characters that are crying out for their own books! I’m very much looking forward to seeing how the story continues and develops.
I have been eyeing this book for a while, it was recommended by my RWATLAL group a while back and, even though I love the cover, the blurb didn’t do it for me. Anyway, with nothing to read, and having a severe case of book withdrawal, (yes, that’s a real thing) I finally cave in. I’m so glad I did, this book is great! It has all the components that make a book five start -Torture hot Alien alpha that looks Alien, a kick-ass heroine that can overcome her situation, drama, humor, action and hot hot hot scenes! Really, and hitting myself against the wall, how I didn’t discover this jewel sooner is beyond me. P.S. there is already a second book called Sarda, is supposed to be a novella and if it’s half as good as this book I will be reading it within the next couple of days.
I’m impressed! This is the first published book by this author. The world building is thorough, flowing naturally as the story unfolds. The main characters are very appealing. Seph is understandably panicked when unexplainable things begin to happen. She relies on key figures of House Borac to help calm her when things get crazy. Seph grows into her newly discovered abilities as the action heats up around her. I adore Rannik, and the growly Thanemonger quickly grows on me. It’s an excellent story and I look forward to the next in the series!
This was suggested to me by Ruby Dixon fans and it did not disappoint. It's a sweet, quick read with just enough sci fi jargon and atmosphere to be firmly in that genre but still a great romance. I hate sci fi books that take themselves too seriously and Thanemonger has a nice balance of fun. I can't wait to read the rest of the series.
My first book from Bex and recommended by one of my favourite authors Anna Carven. It did not disappoint!! Loved the story, very unusual and very techy in places. Looking forward to reading more from this great author.
I have the book 4 stars because of the happy for now threat . I would like Sehp to get her son but also stay with Zever . I do not know this author enough to trust that in the end a true HEA. So I suggest you all read it for yours and decide.
It’s my first time reading this author and although I’m a big fan of alien romances- this one just wasn’t for me.
I think the overall story was just ok. Not too much of a romance, the main couple seems to have an instant physical attraction and more or less hooks up. There’s a lot of secrets between them so I can’t really say they had much of a connection besides physical. I wanted more from these 2. They start to get it on around 60% into the book but are interrupted. They don’t get another chance for a while and their one main steamy scene was weird and I didn’t really understand what was going on…which pretty much describes the entire book for me.
This is about other planets and cultures and people so I expect a bit of a learning curve as the reader experiences these new things, many with unique names. I felt the author did a terrible job explaining the new terminology and we could only infer to most of the meanings. Even the Earth names were so unusual it just made for a story where nothing, even the humans, felt familiar. The FMC is Josephine who goes by Seph. Her brother is Rem (Jeremy) and baby-daddy is Thew (for Matthew?). There was way too much alien terminology and conversations which made me, the reader, go “huh? What does that even mean?”
Even the one time the MC’s have sex, there is clearly a difference in anatomy (he said no one could take him fully before) and he kept asking her to strap him to some chair before they got it on (never got a good explanation for that IMO). At one point the FMC accidentally forms a ‘clutch’ with a younger kid… what is a clutch? We don’t find out until WAY later it’s a harem. So then they ‘break up’ and form a ‘Clade’, which we have to infer to mean ‘a club or group or gang’. There’s way too many species and languages and planets mentioned to even bother trying to keep track. The FMC keeps having freak-outs/ black-outs and it’s never clear why (she finds the clothing uncomfortable? Too many sounds from the ship? Fear/ panic attack? —I never understand except every time someone comes to her rescue she climbs them like a spider-monkey, regardless of who rescues her).
Overall the romance was meh. Considering the book length I also wish there was more spice. My biggest complaint is that there are ZERO answers about how FMC ended up in space, who kidnapped her, how long she has been gone and NO ONE ever heard of earth so there doesn’t seem to be any chance of her ever going home. To top it off, she has a young child at home and is a single mom so we share many of her concerns about what happened to him, how long did it take for someone to find him home alone and who has been caring for him? It seems more sad that she may never see her son again than the HFN she gets with MMC, especially since both say it’s only temporary until she can leave and go back to earth/ her son. Is that even a HFN? I don’t think so….
Author eludes to the fact more books will be in the series and that we will get more closure on the MC’s relationship as well as closure regarding her young human son stuck on earth. However, there appears to only be 1 more book in the series with no conclusion and author seems to have moved on to a new series. Don’t waste time trying to figure out this world or bother getting invested with the characters because the story feels confusing and incomplete with no end in sight.
