Daniel Warren Johnson is a Chicago-based comic book writer, artist, and illustrator. He's worked on titles for most major publishers, including Marvel, DC, Dark Horse, and Image. His current series with Skybound/Image Comics is EXTREMITY, a sci-fi/fantasy title he is writing and drawing, and continues to update his webcomic Space-Mullet in his spare time.
I really enjoyed this series. I thought the characters were rich and nuanced, the world was fascinating, and the art and coloring were phenomenal. I thought it was a unique kind of story to tell, and that the arc as a whole was done well. (Spoilers start here). For this specific issue, I felt things seemed a little rushed. With so many losses right in a row and not enough time in between them, each next loss seemed a little diminished (with the possible exception of Rollo), even though they did feel right for the story. I felt the last couple of pages suffered from this as well, as I would have liked another page or two to get the full emotional impact of the sword being broken. However, I will say that I believe all of that to be more a fault of the medium (page limitations for comics, specifically) than the story itself, and had this been given a few extra pages, it probably would have felt just right, much like the rest of the story. Daniel Warren Johnson and his team are extremely talented storytellers and artists and I look forward with great anticipation to whatever comes next down the line. Though a touch gory for some, perhaps, I would recommend this to anyone looking to launch into comics or any sci-fi fan looking for a fun new world to explore. If more stories happened here, I would not be against it.
