"I have been labelled as a wanderer; this is not the case.
I have a home. It's just that it's an inconvenient place right now."
-Ben Caplan, Traveler's Curse

Criminy follows a family of five who leave their home after a band of marauders attacks. What follows is an adventure that leans upon a style reminiscent of Carl Barks and Floyd Gottfredson mixed with allegory relevant to the latter decade of the 2010s. That's not to say this comic's a bummer, it's all presented in a light-hearted coat of paint.

And I loved it.

WHAT WORKS
1) The islands.
I'll be vague about what happens when, but this is a refugee story at its core. Each island they visit gives insight into the experience, either through the Criminy family itself or the characters they observe. It works nicely.

2) The sincerity of the story. This isn't a malicious comic. The Criminys are an everyday family and are sometimes so sweet they give me cavities. They're good people, so we're keen to empathise with them when the going gets tough.

3) That aesthetic. Call me weak for those cartoon designs. The Fleischer-studio influence was what grabbed my attention, and I'm so glad the art is of consistently good quality throughout the book.

And I don't really have anything to say about what needed improving. It's simple, it's fun, and I liked it a bunch.

Read it with my eight year old daughter, her first words when we finished were "I like this book!" We loved how bizarre the Criminy world was, and she was very moved by the trials and tribulations the family went through, especially as she's at an age where she's learning about different struggles that some people go through in her studies at school. The whimsical drawing style is a balm to the darker elements of the plot, and both those aspects make it an intriguing read for an adult as well. This kind of creative comic work is the perfect generational bridge for this phase of reading, and I would have throughly enjoyed it on my own as well - a masterpiece!

I loved this book. Very intentive, and filled with childlike wonder although with just the right amount of dark edginess below the surface. Definitely engaging throughout and pulls the reader along on the adventure. I own most of Roger Langridge's books as he's one of my all time favourite creators, and Ryan Ferrier is fast becoming another favourite. My only complaint about the book is that I wish it was just a tiny bit longer! I would have liked to know a bit more about some of the side characters and their unusual worlds.

Very reminiscent of Felix the cat and old cartoons from the 30s and 40s. Too preachy and the weird speech just got on my nerves, but I’ll be the weirdness appeals to some kids. Recommended 8-12.
