Redefining the Modern Military: The Intersection of Profession and Ethics

Rate this book
This edited collection will expand upon and refine the ideas on the role of ethics and the profession in the 21st Century. The authors delve into whether Samuel Huntington and Morris Janowitz still ring true in the 21st century; whether training and continuing education play a role in defining a profession; and if there is a universal code of ethics required for the military as a profession. Redefining the Modern Military is unique in how it treats the subject of ethics and the military profession, as well as the types of writers it brings on board to address this topic. The book puts a significant emphasis on individual agency for military professionalism as opposed to broad organizational or cultural change. Such a review of these topics is necessary because the process of serious, intellectual self-reflection is a requirement--especially in a profession that involves life and death of people and nations.

Ostensibly about professionalism in the military, this collection of essays raises questions that can apply to any profession: What defines a profession? How to mentor? How does one promote a professional ethic?
There is something for everyone within these pages. Of course, as the title suggests, the focus of this book is any and all questions pertaining to those charged with defending the Constitution and executing the will of our elected leaders in the application of violence, whether by Land, Sea or Air.
Unending conflict with seemingly murky goals has the potential to strain and degrade professionalism in our Armed Forces. I think this book will be cited for years to come as an essential work in battling against that erosion of the educated and autonomous individual in her chosen field.

The single most important current book on the profession of arms. The editors did a superb job of finding authors across a spectrum of perspectives that tied their topic to existing literature but then took the question forward by considering the current evolution and future challenges. Every member of the armed forces in a democratic society that seeks to consider themselves a member of the profession of arms should read this book, reflect on the questions it raises, and apply them in their stewardship of the profession.

This is a fantastic read for anyone interested in understanding the concept of the military as a profession in the 21st century. With contributing authors from many countries, all services, academia and non- military organisations, readers will find it thought-provoking and thoroughly interesting.

Some highlights from my perspective are:
- the concluding comments from the editors which brought out some poignant conclusions about the perhaps overdeveloped level of trust the populace has for the US military in the 21st century.
- the chapters about mentoring, legal fiduciaries and what does or does not define the military as a profession noting the character of modern wars.
- the two chapters that speak to the history, culture and professionalism of the US Navy and US Air Force.

I learned SO much from this book. It's not the type of book that you can just rip through, but if you take your time (and annotate excessively like me) you can take a lot away from it. In the conclusion, the editors state that this offers a good starting point for discussing our military profession and where it's headed. For civilians and military alike, there's so much to be learned from this. Each chapter is written by a different author, and the wealth of knowledge and experience they bring together to give their own unique perspectives is phenomenal. It took me a while, but I'm glad I read this. The concept of professionalism in the military is hard to grasp, and maybe even harder to define, but this book provides a good context to expand that discussion.

Appreciated the format - each chapter offered something unique. Although I have an Army background, the chapters on Naval professionalism and the internal Air Force struggle with a unified identity, were both fascinating and well-written. Finally, Holly Hughson’s chapter on the intersection of the military and humanitarian relief professions was excellent and particularly relevant. Will keep this book on my shelf as a professional reference!

I’ll probably write a longer review on my blog later, but for now, I think this book introduces a number of important concepts to the conversation about the military profession and the philosophy and ethics that underpin that conversation. Came out of this book with two index cards worth of further reading to continue to explore the topic. A definite recommendation to anyone pursuing a career in the profession of arms.
