As much as Optimus Prime is one of my all time favourite characters, I sadly was not enticed to read on the first volume. For some reason, I decided to skip the other volumes to read volume 4, and surprisingly was able to enjoy this not reading in sequence. The Shockwave twist certainly sold it. Although I admit some of the twist didn't make much sense to me, having not read Dark Cybertron, or being caught up on most of IDW's TF series. Starscreams plight was one to sympathize with, even empathise, when he found out his rise to rule cybertron was manipulated and not because of any real merit as he was seen as incapable in reality.

Art is great, but the story is lackluster.

It has some amazing twists, like Onyx being Shockwave, Starscream never being Chosen One to begin with and with Soundwave losing control of the Decepticons.

But other than that it's mid.
I was especially confused with how Shockwave kicked Optimus into a black hole, supposedly killing him, and then Shockwave asks Jetfire to bring him back because "he's my friend"? What?

The end is way too underwhelming too. After 12 million years of planning, the entire master plan of Shockwave falls apart because he loses one fistfight. You'd think he learn at this point.

Transformers: Optimus Prime Vol. 4 see the return of Shockwave with titanic twist that literally stretch back millions of years! :D The plot twist and turns are completely unseen but neatly tie plot threads together but at the same time set up things for future events and plots! :D The art is quick and vibrant and neatly shows what the characters are being put through! :D Barber put his characters through the wringer, the plot zings along and is full of action and adventure! :D Crisp High five! :D Get if you can! :D

While the Lost Light series has been consistently amazing, Optimus Prime has been a bit more hit and miss. This volume, though, was definitely one of the hits. There are some pretty spectacular twists that color a whole lot of what's been going on up to this point, some characters have pretty potent revelations, and the stage is very much set for the finale of IDW's entire run. I can't wait to see how it all ends.

I usually prefer John Barber's quieter tales yet he delivers 'The Falling', an all action epic with great skill and it's hard to put down. The artists include the painter Ramondelli and adopt his style. It's magnificent: previously sometimes so as to be jarring but here the cosmic awe of it flows perfectly.

Shockwave salvaged this car crash of a series for one volume. It's clear that they're trying really hard to write this well, but it's just not coming together. This volume was for the most part, a rare hit in a string of misses, for which it's to be commended, but I don't hear great things about the next one.

Yes! This is Barber at his finest. Payoff for so much continuity and guesswork over the years. I really do wish this aspect of the OP series, Cybertronian mythos and history, had featured even larger in the scheme of the series until now.
