🐾

"Break Through to Yes: Unlocking the Possible Within a Culture of Collaboration" by David B. Savage is a book that emphasizes the importance of effective collaboration in today's economy and outlines the steps one can take to achieve success through the right choices and a bit of luck.

The book is divided into four parts, where the author discusses the discipline necessary to harness good collaboration and the essential steps for effective collaboration. While highlighting the positive impacts of good collaborations on businesses, the book also sheds light on the negative consequences of making wrong decisions and stresses the importance of having a diverse team to provide varying opinions and avoid becoming one-tracked and stagnant.

There is no singular, rigid formula for achieving a collaboration or team that will prove 100% beneficial to all parties involved. However, a push in the right direction can help businesses reach great heights.

Although I found this book informative, I believe its effectiveness can only be truly evaluated by implementing its ideas in an actual workplace to witness the results of its principles.

Break Through to Yes by David B. Savage is a great comprehensive book on the professional world of collaboration. Collaboration is a topic must of us think is just something we can do easily enough. But those who have had to work in fields where the tensions and expectations are high, knowing how to collaborate is essential. Meaning, we all can collaborate. Just some of skills are rusty and can be improved upon with this read. I found it quite interesting. Just like every audience varies so to, does the way in which collaboration works. David B. Savage gives us, readers, the insider's insights by using his own experience. He draws my attention on the situations he has experienced. His book breaks down the subject into parts. Each part gets me a step closer to understanding and learning more about collaborating with others. Overall, I highly recommend this informative and well-written book to all professionals.

I received this copy from the publisher. This is my voluntary review.

The Review

This was such an informative and insightful read. The author did a fantastic job of finding the right balance of educational and teaching moments within this book with personal experiences and narratives within the context of the book that highlighted the author’s message. The descriptive imagery that the author employs to paint an image in the reader’s mind really emphasizes the concept of collaboration.

Honestly, there were a couple of things that really stood out to me in this read. The first was the way the author was able to connect with all readers for this guide, not just business-oriented readers. I personally am not well versed in business and have never really had the drive for it, but I always appreciate an author who can make an educational guide like this feel understandable and relatable, something the author has accomplished here. Also, I enjoyed seeing how the author’s collaborative teachings applied to more than just business. The book itself opens up a perfect examination of collaboration within the environment itself and opens up to how collaboration can apply to our relationships, our friendships, and so much more.

The Verdict

An engaging, thought-provoking, and educational guide on business, the environment, and beyond, author David B. Savage’s “Breaking Through to Yes” is the ultimate lesson on the nature of collaboration and teamwork that a reader can have. The imagery and tone of the author’s writing convey authority yet compassion in the face of years of individualist and narrow-minded goals set within a business setting, and this guide will lead readers onto a brilliant path of success in many facets of life if they heed the author’s words.

This is an in-depth look at collaboration, from the whys to the hows. David B. Savage masterfully integrates years of experience as a negotiator with research on the hot topic of collaboration.

Collaboration is much more than simply working together. The author goes through the minute details that affect the outcome of collaboration; for the good and bad.

I appreciated the inclusion of anecdotal experience backed up with research. It is a well-written book that should be used by those looking to be in a leadership role.

The book ends with advice from various individuals, giving a broader range of collaboration insights.

This was just not a very good book. The writing was jumpy and disjointed. It went from quote to anecdote to rambling strings of self-help jargon in rapidfire paragraphs, changing topic and even typeface on the same page. It was a slow and difficult read for such a short book, almost as if the author didn't mean for it to be read. The author's heart was in the right place, and I agree with the premise of a need for greater collaboration in corporate environments, but I doubt this book will convince many people of that.
