13 is book 2 of Rhonda James’ new series and can be read as a standalone. However, I would recommend reading 21, the first book, as you'll definitely want to know the story behind Tori and Dylan/Sin who you get to see in this book.
‘In that moment, I knew that, if given the chance, this girl could destroy me.’ - Hawk
I couldn't put down this amazing addition to a series that I'm already hooked on. Everyone I'd spoken to raved about Hawk, but I wasn't prepared for just how great he is. I also loved Sophie who I was able to relate with after also having had my own heart broken and now being fearful of giving love another chance. Sometimes a book comes into your life just when you need help to find the answers you're searching for, and 13 was THE book I needed. If you haven't yet read any of Rhonda James’ books, this would be a great one to start with. However, she's written many other brilliant books and like me when I read my first book by her, you'll want to read everything she's ever written.
‘I told myself I’d never love again. I’d never let myself be that vulnerable again. Little by little I’d become a shell of my former self. It was time I broke free of those protective layers and allowed myself to taste life again.’ - Sophie
What I enjoyed the most about 13 is that Rhonda James doesn't make Hawk to be your ‘typical rock star’. He doesn't immediately jump into bed with Sophie, even though he very clearly wants to, and instead takes his time to ‘woo’ her. He's so sweet and romantic that my heart melted. Despite it taking a while before Hawk and Sophie do take that next step, there's none of the usual suspense about when it will actually happen. The relationship building between them is so romantic that you become engrossed by the journey they're taking and all the special moments they share. 13 has everything a reader could want in a book; laughter, romance, friendship, love, passion, understanding and so much more. For me, chapter 29 was the most moving as we see Hawk putting his love for Sophie first and making a sacrifice that could result in him losing her forever.
‘He cupped my cheek and smiled a sad smile. “Hey, I know it’s going to be hard. I don’t like it any better than you do, but you have to go. You’re about to go conquer the world. You can’t give that up just to sit and stare at my ugly mug all day.”He kissed the tip of my scrunched-up nose.’ - Sophie
Rhonda James is an author who fast becomes one of your favourites, and I can't understand why all her books haven't become number one bestsellers. More readers need to discover this very talented author!
P.S. As much as I love Hawk, B will always be my favourite! 🖤
