Rate this book
Emily Moore keeps to herself. She isn't interested in social niceties, she isn't interested in making friends. But a chance tragedy on the way home from school reunites her with someone she met long ago, someone she barely thought was real...

This is the first volume of A Francis' webcomic The Bright Side (www.thebrightsidecomic.com), making its print debut. It's the story of the peculiar but close friendship between Emily and Death, as they grow and learn and are forced to challenge everything they think they know.

I read this comic in late middle school and early high school online, and I recently decided to start a reread and actually catch up - so imagine my delight at realizing there is a physical copy to be had! As a preferential physical reader this is just what I was dreaming of.

The first published volume of A. Francis's webcomic The Bright Side is now out! It contains the first 382 pages of the comic, which can be read in its entirety online at http://www.thebrightsidecomic.com/.

The Bright Side is the story of two best friends: Em, a reclusive high school student, and Dee, the grim reaper. The two spend most of their time talking about philosophy and trying to figure out a positive relationship across the boundaries of age, culture and tangibility. The Bright Side is sweet, intelligent and weird in all the best ways.

That was...a hell of a lot more existential than what the cover lead me to believe. Reading this was like having a chat with Aristotle while playing on the swings. Very interesting, very engaging and something to think about well after.
Plus I love that it's set in Australia!
It stopped in an odd place, and that was when I realised it was the first volume of a series. Will definitely pick up the next volume to see what happens, but I wouldn't call this a light read - put your thinking caps on for this one!

An overall interesting story about the philosophy of friendship, life, and death but it would be greatly helped along by using typography rather than handwriting (this slowed me down considerably) and some general editing to bring the page count down some. The story does seem to be leading somewhere but it's doing some meandering on the way there.

This is my all-time favorite webcomic, and by pure coincidence, I was in Australia during a zine fest where the author had a table, so I managed to get both volume 1 and 2 as books (with autographs!) I WAS SO STAR STRUCK, and I enjoyed myself immensely on this re-read as usual ❤
