The author does a noble task in explaining the historical background of the religion of islam.
Positive points:
- Good explanation of concepts such as 'anthropologic wall', 'historic research' and the tribal systems.
- Good pedagogic approach.
- Chapter 1 : Explaining the historic situation of Mecca in the 7th century: well explained, from different angles !
- Chapter 9 : Reading the 4 layers of the biography of Muhammad was for me an eyeopener. (Hierarchy of the sources). I enjoyed the read !
Negative points :
- Providing a good historical background is a necessary condition for understanding the quran; .... but wanting to explain everything within this framework (only) is something else.
- somtimes the book is a little (too) apologetic. (sometimes, he takes here too much freedom, and leaves the scientific area)
- In a very few places there is also some disdain for the more traditional islamic lifestyles. Such as wearing a 'thawb', having a beard or wearing a hijab. .... It happens only very occassionaly. But I didn't like it.
Conclusion :
As a whole, I think it is a valuable read for anyone with an interest in politics, society and religion.
