She can’t tell the truth to save her life—now she might have to. From USA Today bestselling author Cynthia St. Aubin. When aspiring attorney and gifted prevaricator Jane Avery is charged with killing a powerful software engineer, she sticks to the whole truth and nothing but. This time, she really has no idea who he is, or what he was doing in her bed. But no sooner is Jane railroaded than she’s bailed out by shady billionaire architect Archard Valentine. He and Jane have something in they’re both looking for Jane’s mother, Alex. For Valentine, it’s business. For Jane, it’s personal. And with one last lead to follow, she’s on the run. Jane and Valentine aren’t the only ones bound for Seattle. So is Jane’s legal mentor…and a female colleague who plays her own games with the truth. Where they’re headed is straight into a fatal high-tech conspiracy, a web of betrayal, and a criminal mastermind connected to everything in Jane’s life. And, maybe, to all that’s missing in it. Now Jane can trust only herself to find what she’s been looking for—and fast—because believe it or not, someone is dead set on making her disappear too.
USA Today bestselling author Cynthia St. Aubin wrote her first play at age eight and made her brothers perform it for the admission price of gum wrappers. A steal, considering she provided the wrappers in advance. Though her early work debuted to mixed reviews, she never quite gave up on the writing thing, even while earning a mostly useless master's degree in art history and taking her turn as a cube monkey in the corporate warren.
Because the voices in her head kept talking to her, and they discourage drinking at work, she started writing instead. When she's not standing in front of the fridge eating cheese, she's hard at work figuring out which mythological, art historical, or paranormal friends to play with next. She lives in Colorado with the love of her life and three surly cats.
Witty and fast-paced - I'd say these two describe this murder mystery the best. There are also quite a few moments of pure shock, but the good kind. The kind that make your jaw drop and stay up all night in order to reach the next one.
Thank you NetGalley for this copy in exchange for my honest review.
Lying Low is the second in the Jane Avery Mysteries seris by Cynthia St. Aubin. This was a fluffy, fun, quick read, perfect for a rainy weekend. Jane is continues to be her crude, foul-mouthed self, getting into absurd situations as she fumbles her way through solving the mystery behind her mom's disappearance. At the same time, Jane also has to solve a murder to clearn her name as primary suspect. The plot twists and turns so much I had no idea whodunit and the logic behind how we got to the big reveal was a bit confusing. Still, this was worth reading for the LARP section alone. Jane as a purple elf queen was laugh out loud hilarious.
Cynthia St. Aubin does it again! With Lying Low, she's created another wonderful story filled with zany characters, sexy men, and a whodunnit you didn't see coming. I highly recommend this story to anyone needing a few hours of entertainment. It has it all: humor, mystery, and with a wonderful plot twist or two thrown in for good measure. Well done, Ms. St. Aubin!
Jane is back and on the trail to find her missing mother. Trying to turn over a new leaf. No more lies. She’s sarcastic, irreverent, and totally bada$$! My hero! Quick witted dialogue will keep you laughing (hysterically) the whole way through. This series has become one of my favorites and I can’t wait for more.
Thank you NetGalley and Thomas & Mercer for this arc.
Just what I needed -- Fluffy & outrageous fun. This is the second Jane Avery book and she manages to find as much trouble as in her first one. But she got to dress up as a purple/lilac elf queen in this one. It's been overcast and kind of rainy, so I had a big bowl of popcorn with this one.
Jane is one fantastically crazy lady! She's caught up in something so far out of her realm but she just goes with it and fights back with hysterical sarcasm. Still on the hunt for her mother she finds more secrets, more death and how to LARP. There's never a dull moment for Jane and she seems to make friends wherever she goes. I wanted to read a bit slower so I could enjoy the humor and wonderful storytelling a little longer. I received my copy from Netgalley and have voluntarily written my unbiased review.
I was so super excited that I got a copy of this book from NetGalley, in exchange for a review, which I am as always happy to provide, that I actually jumped up and down. Did I mention that I am a huge fan of Cynthia St Aubin? This is the second book of the series and I would definitely recommend that you read them in order, since this book picks up were the other one left off. What a wild and crazy ride, I was laughing out loud so many times that my husband demanded to know what I was reading and I ended up reading out loud to him, what can I say Jane has some great one-liners. It had action, suspense, romance and I can't wait to see what will happen next. Awesome characters and a whole lot of fun to read.
Absolutely a sht ton of the most outrageous crap comes out of Jane's mouth. I freaking love her lol! Then you throw in Tyler and you have yourself a party lol. Along with death and destruction you have day in the life that is Jane Avery's norm. THIS IS A MUST READ.
The second book in the Jane Avery Mysteries...amazing book with twists and turns you don’t see coming. On the edge of my seat and laughing out loud. Jane is one heroine I can’t get enough of. She doesn’t hold back. Tells it like it is. What is she supposed to do when she finds a man in her bed, but the problem is he’s dead. All of the evidence points to her. Lucky she has friends in high places. She won’t rest until her name is cleared, and she finds her mother.
Highly recommend. Be sure to read Private Lies which is book 1.
Jane is still trying to figure out what happened with her mother, and she seems to be trusting all the wrong people, then come to find out she's being charged with murder. Things aren't looking up for her.
This book was good, and I enjoyed the story and the characters. The only thing that was annoying was the fact that Jane was trained by a "master" yet she made a whole lot of stupid mistakes. Other than that, I thought it was good, and I'm looking forward to more in the series.
I received an advanced copy of this book from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
After being caught with the dead body of a software engineer in her bed, Jane's plans to search for her missing mother are sidetracked when she's taken into custody by the police. Fortunately for her, she has billionaire Archard Valentine, a man with as many secrets as dollars, on her side to bail her out. When she decides to take a trip to Seattle to search for her mother, as well as investigate the murder she's suddenly embroiled in, she soon realizes her allies aren't as trustworthy as she thought.
I was an instant fan of Cynthia St. Aubin after reading the first book in this series, Private Lies. I absolutely love strong-willed, intelligent female protagonists, and Jane Avery a wonderful example. Add in the fact that St. Aubin can WRITE, I was hooked. I'm not even a little embarrassed to admit I screamed a little discovering Lying Low on NetGalley. I'm super pumped to find it was just as good as, if not better than, the first installment.
While the mystery was top-notch in the first book, I couldn't even begin to guess where the author would go with the plot in this book. Just when I thought I maybe figured out whodunnit, St. Aubin completely pulls the carpet out from under me, blowing my mind. I loved, loved, loved the new characters she added in this installment, as well, though I have an obvious favorite that I truly hope we see tons more of in the next book. I also like that the romantic subplot is taking up more of the plot. While, yes, this book does appear to be hinting at a love-triangle, it doesn't really take the spotlight and I'm confident the author will do a great job with it. And, yeah, I have a favorite, I like both of them enough that I'll be okay whichever way it lands.
Overall, Lying Low was amazing, and waiting for book three is probably going to be tortuous for me, but oh-so worth it. I highly recommend this series to fans of mystery, humor, and romance!
Jane (the Protagonist) is quite hilarious! She's smart, yet tends to do some dumb things. lol She's got a mouth on her and isn't afraid to use it, even when she should probably zip her lips. The other characters (both the large and small roles) are primarily more serious and stoic, but Jane brings us enough laughs to carry on that role for the others. Granted they each have some personalities that may not be considered 'normal.' Each is unique and provides something for the story. Jane is searching for her missing mom, in addition to helping on a case with her law firm, in addition to prove her innocence in the murder she's arrested for. She's willing to do anything to get the information she needs, and sometimes the things she has to do are a bit outrageous. Despite Jane's wild personality, she makes no apologies for it. You can accept it or move on.
This is book two of the series and can be read without any issues. There are things that had happened in book one, but everything you need to know to follow along is mentioned in this book. There is an underlying mystery that runs through the books, but the main crime/murder (an unknown naked man dead in her bed) that takes place in this book is solved. There are a lot of things that are going on at the same time, so it can get busy, but it is easy to follow if you are playing attention. There are a few surprises. There is a sort of romance, but not quite. lol (You'll have to read to understand.) There are no sex scenes (it is implied once or twice,) but the language is pretty strong, so I'd suggest keeping this one away from the youngins. There is also a small amount of violence. It's well written and easy to read.
OMG...I just don't even know where to start...this was one of the best books ever! No Lie! (no pun intended)! How can you NOT love a book that starts out with the very first line being "There was a man in my bed." I was captured and captivated from that moment on! Super fun and even more snarky, this Jane Avery mystery is sure to keep your attention too! Jane is nothing if not a badass woman! She kicks ass and takes names and everything she does, even if you say "WTF" leaves you smiling! You will not find any spoilers in this review, just know that this story moves right along and is chock full of characters you love to love, love to have, and just really want to go to bed with too! Mystery and intrigue, twists and turns that keep you swiping the pages of your Kindle well past your bedtime. If you love characters with personality, and believe me, everyone in this book holds their own, this is certainly the book/series for you. I had more than a few laugh 0ut loud moments, and just need to tell you that if you wait a minute longer to get this book (one click NOW) you will certainly be missing out on a sure fire winner. Jane, my newest, BAD ASS heroine! P.S. You don't need to read the first book to follow along, but why not get if if you haven't? You really won't be sorry!

I absolutely Loved this book and the series! I Love Jane when she lies and tells the truth , she is so funny and so smart. I love her interactions with people. This book picks up after her mom disappeared with a dead body turning up in her bed. Then we see the return of Shepard, Valentine, Bixby, Shook and the Beautiful nemesis Melanie who even though she is sweet and thoughtful it is hard to like. The addition of the interesting Tyler is perfect for this book! I usually figure out who the killer is early in a book but I was totally shocked at this one and a little sad. Hero's are not always Hero's 😢. I have decided Melanie is not a good judge of character something else Jane can hold against her not counting the fact that Jane did not see it either. I cannot wait for the next book and want to owe Tyler a favor for telling me Sheppard's name. I really hope Ma. St.Aubin writes fast!
Jane is back, I've been waiting patiently (yes it's true so no laughing) for this book! I should know better than to read this author's books in either 1- in a drs office or such place laughing out loud would get you glares or 2 - while drinking (go on admit you've done this too), this time it was #1. From the beginning this book did what all her books do, put a smile on my face while laughing.
What Jane gets into, or what happens to her, is crazy but oh so the Jane we met in the first book. I just want more of her and her crew, new and old. Be prepare for surprises, purple (yes the color), and "the persuasive power of tits". You definitely want to read this!!
Now to patiently wait for the next book (starts tapping fingers on the desk as I wait).
You wouldn't think being charged with the murder of a man found dead in your bed would be a laughing matter but Jane Avery always keeps her sense of humor. Even as she's dealing with that little problem, she's searching for her mother Alex. There are some good twists in this funny, smart mystery and like the last book, the end left me going hmmmm. Don't worry if you didn't read the first one, btw, because St Aubin gives newbies enough info to appreciate this while not overloading those of us who are familiar with the characters. As always, keep an eye on the new characters as they aren't all what they seem. Thanks to Netgalley for the ARC.
Amazon recommended this book to me. It was actually pretty good. The novel has shades of Evanovich with a lead female character who seems to find herself in the ungodliest of situations. There is also a side cast of unique characters. In this one, Jane Avery is trying to find out where her mother has gone. She has also been accused of murder after a man is found dead in her bed and the murder weapon is her unregistered gun. It was fun to follow Jane as she tracks clues related to both mysteries. I think I would have enjoyed this book even more if I had read the first book in the series. I can definitely say I will pick up book three when it comes out.
Cynthia St.Austin's knows how to write a story and Lying Low was just as good as the first book in this series. Jane once again finds herself in trouble when a naked man is found dead in her bed shot with her gun. She's also still trying to find her missing mother. When the law suite her firm is working on leads her to Seattle the last place her mother was seen things get weird. Jane finds more questions than answers in the search for the truth. Will she find her mother and who killed the naked man before its too late
Loved this smart, funny, (at times) foul-mouthed character! Jane comes home one day to find a dead man shot in her bed. She's also looking for her mother, who disappeared one month earlier. She is charged with murder, but gets bailed out in time to get to Seattle, to search for her mother and work on a case with her law firm. Lots of twists and turns, and other great characters! I can't wait to read the first book in this series, and all the others!
I received this book from Net Galley and I just finished it. I was rather disappointed because this book wasn't at all funny like the first in the series. I enjoyed the mystery and the characters are fun and entertaining. I will look forward to the next book which is obviously coming since this is left a bit up in the air.
This is a great book with a wonderful story and well developed characters. The story flowed very well and was very enjoyable. This book will keep you reading long into the night and you will not want to put this book down until you finish. This was such a great read and full of surprises. I am looking forward to reading other books by this great author.
This book is even more ridiculous than the first one, i was "lol" and "huh" through out it... i swear this series is the only one that actually made me pull faces in public and that says alot... so now what do i do when the story is not finished and i don't know when the next book is coming out T.T
With all the snarkiness, only Jane can provide, she (and a bevy of men who are determined to protect her from herself) continues her search for her mother.
Read the first book and this the second was equally as goo. If you like stories that twist and then then these books are it. Very well written and keeps you guessing right til the end
I liked the first book. I don’t remember it being so crude and abrasive as this one though. Jane is VERY antagonistic, which makes it hard to like her. She’s selfish and rude. I forced myself to give it a chance, but by halfway through, I’m done.
This book was so much fun to read!! Jane has so many layers to her personality. Story flows really well, likable characters, well written. I've already finished the 2nd book and can't wait for the 3rd!
Jane Avery, my spirit animal! Smart, quippy,, sailor-talking bad-a**. I like the fast, quick-witted writing in these books. I can't wait for the continued adventure in book #3.
Enjoyable fast read, full of improbable encounters and bad language. If you've read Janet Evanovich's Stephanie Plum series, you'll recognize this similar character.
