I can’t say enough good things about this book. It isn’t a call to action (leading to works-based Salvation), but rather a call to theologically understanding (leading to repentant faith) the beautiful & overwhelming freedom we have in Christ. I think Paul Washer said it best in his foreword “Leiter deals with Romans 6 & 7 in a logical and consistent manner which he then communicates to the reader with profound simplicity.“ He supplies a wholesome understanding of Justification and it’s truths/characteristics taught not just from Romans, but throughout Scripture. This is so helpful in changing our daily perspective on our personal and fatal sin. He then lays out clearly what Regeneration is and how it’s modeled in a truly reborn Christian. The power of Christ given to us, working in us, should never make the Law seem daunting. These two combined with doctrines of repentance, total depravity, God’s character, sanctification, and others should bring about much clarity in our foundation of faith. Concerning grace, this is an enlightening exploration of the biblical middle between legalist and libertine. He debunks common sayings in the modern church and explains what being free from sin in a sinful world looks like. Some takeaways/reminders for me were: -The blood of Christ is the ground of justification, but faith is the instrument or channel by which we receive the “gift of righteousness.” -When God justifies a man, He also regenerates him. It never occurs without it. -My flesh is NOT my identity. -The Law is good & it does not change...but rather WE do! So of course it will bring death to some and life to others. -We get a new heart. Not one that battles with our old heart, but simply a new heart. -Every desire for goodness and every act of obedience is graciously worked in the believer by God/from God. -There is nothing in a man that causes God to justify man, including his repentance and faith.
And those are just a few. One of my favorite quotes of Leiter’s: “The true Christian will never use grace as a ‘license to sin’; he already sins more than he wants to.” This book is a short & concise taste if you’re looking for Systematic Theology. But it’s wonderfully dense, sparing no room for useless fluff. I highly encourage scouring through the Appendices for straight biblical application. Christ saves us from the penalty of sin (by justification) and power of sin (by regeneration). Dive deep into Justification and Regeneration to appreciate what that means for you!
*Honorable mention: I particularly enjoyed his inclusion of hymns throughout the chapters as they actually communicate solid theology/truth in the most beautiful, poetic language. They educate us and worship God at the same time. We must sing hymns! I’ll never look at them the same.
Paradigm shifting- great explanations of what it means to be regenerated, renewed, alive in Christ, dead to sin. Highly recommend and would be a great read along with a Romans study.
E cea mai simpla si mai usor de inteles expunere din ce am citit pana acum a celor 2 subiecte extrem de profunde ale Scripturii: justificarea si renegerarea. Acopera toate chestiunile importante si obligatorii de stiut pentru orice crestin.
Excellent, concise, easy to read and yet rich with depth on a topic that is so vital in every aspect of the Christian faith. Leiter unpacks Biblical texts and explains important theological concepts with a pastor's heart. Especially helpful for me was his exposition of Romans 7. I agree with his conclusions that Paul was likely not referring to the struggle of a regenerate believer.
As most books are visited and the Bible lived in and we adorn Christ. The Lord of Glory. We can see frames and platforms from this book that paints a deeper and more rooted focus on the desire to be sanctified as a result to obey the commandments of Christ. Once saved always saved is perseverance for Saints those who can be assured of their salvation and yet conscious of their Dependance upon God. The Lord shows us His mercy in sending His Son Jesus to die for our sins, the Lord displayed His love perfectly in sending His Only Son as a substitutionary attonement for sin. It is by grace through faith we are given hearts by God that can understand the power of God in the gospel.
Throughout this book there are clear themes of orthopraxy (right living) biblical methods on how to wage war against sin by the Spirit of the Lord. To be risen with Christ and justified, to know our position before a sovereign Lord of all creation. To be content with the reality of where we stand with God.

I really enjoyed this book for it's brevity, clarity, and for the amount of Scripture Leiter interacts with. I will say, he doesn't interact on a deep level with any text (except perhaps Romans 7), but the sheer volume of scripture makes the case persuasive. Leiter's thesis is that essentially that the Christian is a completely new creation, not a mixture of old and new, and the chief means of effecting this change are justification and regeneration. I walked away encouraged b/c Leiter sets out to help Christians embrace and celebrate who they really are in Christ, rather that feeling like wretched worms who are constantly trying to become something they're not (righteous). Highly recommended.
Thsi book explains the whole crux of our Christian faith. The whole reason for God giving us his word and Jesus sacrifice is for our re-birth through Christ who is our propitiation in order that we will be justified.
I have found nothing that explains this more clearly than this book.
This book explains very well what does it mean to be justified in Christ as well the LOST doctrine of regeneration. It clearly shows that salvation is a super-natural work of God whereby the Christian is a completely new creation. It also contains a lot of Scriptural references.
As men in our church we went through this book like a bible study and for me I have had the privileged of being in pastor Leiter church for the first thirteen years of my life!! It was really cool to have justification and regelation defined so very well!
