Biography

MATT SHAW was born, quite by accident (his mother tripped, he shot out) September 30th 1980 in Winchester hospital where he was immediately placed on the baby ward and EBay. Some twelve years later (wandering the corridors of the hospital and playing with road kill when he was on day release), the listing closed and he remained unsold, he was booted out of the hospital to start his life as a writer and hobbit – beginning with writing screenplays and short stories for his own amusement before finally getting published when he was twenty-seven years and forty-five seconds old.

Once Published weekly in a lad's magazine with his photography work, Matt Shaw is also a published author and cartoonist. Has to be said, can be a bit of a flirt and definitely, without a shadow of a doubt, somewhat of a klutz.

Hmm. I had seen Matt Shaw's books being read on Goodreads for a while now. They looked interesting and I kept thinking I would pick one up. I saw my friend JaHy ❣Sugar Lumps Reads Crazy Shit ❣ HaAAARRRdy ♕ ’s updates on this one and loved them..she always posts the bestest updates. :)

I gotta admit. This book was like watching a train wreck:

I might have known better but I could not look away. Shaw takes you into the porn industry. AND it's not a pretty picture. I can't say that I wasn't at some point cheering for the main character to kick some major ass after I realized what had happened.
Then I needed more alcohol:

then came chainsaws...and I was:

Warning: this book contains triggers of just about every form. Not for the lighthearted.
Matt Shaw just gained another fan.

ETA: My husband works nights. He reads sometimes and sometimes not. He had wanted me to add my kindle app to his phone so he could read some of the books I have.
Last night he was doing guard duty at the hospital and had downtime. He came home this morning and said.."Um I read one of the books on your kindle last night."
Me"yeah? which one?"
Him:"I was looking through it and one popped out at me. I wondered why my wife was reading porn. So I started it."
Me: "okkkkayy"
Him: "You got any more on there like that?"
So he made me take my review from 4 stars to 5stars.

4 stars!

Matt Shaw definitely has an addictive writing style. this book was very difficult to put down. i desperately wanted to find out all the details and fill in all the gaps in the story.

that ending was pretty damn unexpected. i did not see any of that coming AT ALL.

“i didn’t scream. i smiled.”

that’s what i want from the horror books i read - to actually be surprised and impressed by the plot twists.

sure, i like reading gory, fucked up & twisted shit, BUT all that isn’t enough to fully satisfy me. i always want something that makes me go “oh fuck, i did NOT see THAT coming.” this book certainly did that!

if you like gore, splatterpunk horror, revenge stories and want a quick & addictive read, i definitely recommend this book!

*** 5 " I've been thoroughly fucked" stars****

When I spotted the title "PORN" I was like that chic in Jerry Maquire, " You had me at hello.... Now please excuse me while I go one -click you."

I am a {big } fan of Matt Shaw (& extremely impatient) so I said screw it and completely disregarded the synopsis. I mean really, the title alone speaks for itself. Does the synopsis even matter?.. Well, MAYBE. (Read the warning people)
So, if you're hoping PORN is :
A) Photography book- Sorry, you're S.O.L... btw, have you heard of a little thing called the internet? Use it. There's all types of naughty pictures out there.......or so I've heard.
B) Pop-up book- Damn, it's not, but that would be pretty friggin cool.
C) A smutty romance-Hell No, this isn't a naughty chick-lit . HELLO, I should have been your first clue.
D) Jedi mind fuck- Winner, Winner, chicken dinner!!!!... You've come to the right place. This isn't your usual MF, so get ready to cheer, gasp, cringe and grab your taa-taa's .. and/or..
....I'm not kidding.

PORN starts off like your ordinary, run of the mill PORN STAR story... An acting coach filled a naïve females head with false hope.... which leads her to flee to Hollywood.... **insert waitressing job here **.... living paycheck to paycheck.... while daily checking the wanted ads ... which lands them on a comfy casting couch. But, that's were the similarities end.....and so does my review because I am not SPOILING a damnn thing for anyone.
..MWAH!

Lessons taken out of this? Never wrong a porn star or she’ll use a chainsaw.

My head is empty, I don’t know what to rate this. I don’t even know what to do with my life anymore. That ending was the most unsatisfyingly satisfactory experience.

It was .....horrible

But also amazing

No, I’m pretty sure it was just horrible

And clever

HORRIBLE

*whispers* give it 5 stars

description

I can’t even call it bittersweet because the bitterness almost choked me to death before I felt even a twinge of sweetness.

(after much thinking my second evil personality won and I gave it 5 stars:( )

If we ignore the fact that I started this review with the ending (again) we can backpedal (again) and get to the juicy parts.

This is a revenge story. The most satisfying, gory and ruthless revenge story I've ever read (we're just pretending like the ending does not exist for now). The villain was punished so brutally, I almost felt bad for him. Until I found out what he did and then I was laughing like a raving lunatic as the heroine tortured him slowly and painfully until he started begging to be killed.

description

But besides being a satisfying (haha still ignoring that ending) story of vengeance it also talks about the dark side of the porn industry.

Fun fact: a large percentage of pornography you see on the internet is not acting but RAPE. I don’t know if scenarios like described in this book happen in real life (wouldn’t be surprised if they did), but what I do know is that a lot of sick fucks do take advantage of both men & women, record them, before posting it all on the internet. Reading this was probably a little more chilling for me than usual because I knew that these things happen not only in fiction.

here's where I come to my next point...

Out of the three books I’ve read so far, this one was the hardest.

Mainly because it had extremely graphic descriptions of rape. The things that were done to the heroine made me physically cringe away (and that’s not an easy feat for me). Detailed rape is probably the only thing to get to me in dark books.

But those scenes, although difficult, made the revenge that much sweeter (ending? there is no ending now). Every single thing she did to him was like a balm soothing the soreness the rape had left behind.

And this is where I’ll come at you with the quotes (the tamest ones because I ain't gonna be responsible for traumatising you):

Did he really think I'd kiss it? Was he really that fucking stupid? With no warning, I slapped his penis hard and laughed at his pained groan. "You're a maggot!"

let him have the false hope that I'd take him to the point of ejaculation. I looked towards the camera, still filming attached to the tripod at the side of us, and gave it a wink. A second later and I bit down.

He bit down on the sandwich, taking a chunk off, and I pulled the remainder away - giving him the space to chew it of his own accord.
"Good pet!"

"Do you have any children at home?" I asked.
He shook his head.
"And you never will," I laughed.
With that I swung the hammer down and then straight up between his legs as hard and fast as I could.

I like the sound of his begging. Weird to think that it's making me a little wet.

Doesn't this just fill your heart with peace and prosperity?
description

Ugh okay, I guess party time is over, cause now I wanna talk about that ending again (can't ignore it forever).
IF you didn't read the book DO NOT view the spoiler. I am not asking, I am telling.

but fear not my dear GR friends, I won't be leaving you out. I'll say one thing:
I already know which of you would be interested in this (you know who you are) and I also know most of you will probably UTTERLY hate that ending. So do with that what you will and happy hunger games

I need to get something out of my system before I begin . . .

Dallas Commercial Photography

Okay, that's a little better.

You'd think this selection was all Mitchell's doing, but nope - this time it was all me. Sweet little Stepheny said she was up for a buddy read and when I noticed Porn on both of our TBR lists I figured it was time to go big or go home. And boy did we go big.

Dallas Commercial Photography

Victoria Sheldon had dreams of becoming a leading lady in the movies. What she didn't expect was for her fame to come under the stage name "Vicky Blows" and the genre which she would excel to be pornography. When Vicky finds herself presented with an offer that pays as much as three of her usual gigs, she's all for it. That's her first mistake . . .

Obviously Porn is NOT a book for everyone. I figured I would end up including myself on that list, but holy crap this was gooooooood. I'm hesitant in saying much because I don't want to give anything away, so I'm just going to leave a couple of tidbits. To begin with, the "porn" aspect. Let's just say . . .

Dallas Commercial Photography

and things that I read will never be unread . . .

Dallas Commercial Photography

then everything got a little . . .

Dallas Commercial Photography

and right when I thought it was wrapping up (because for some reason Goodreads had the page count at 130 and it was actually like 170), my mind was officially f*&^%d . . .

Dallas Commercial Photography

Matt Shaw, I bow down to you as the King of the Extreme. Now where'd I leave my barf bag?

5 Blown Away Stars!

Seriously...

This little baby had me completely jacked up. There were multiple times I sat there with my mouth wide open in shock...I can usually predict where things are heading in books...not this one!

So what is this crazy one about...

Like most of my recommendations from my BW Jahy I went in blind. I had no clue what the book was about, I have still not read the blurb...I am a rebel like that.

So...this is a story about a female who took a career in the adult film industry. It shows a very different side then what you would think.

Its not all about...

Honestly, it delves into some serious issues and makes you think.

In the end...

This is a five star read because it shocked the shit out of me on multiple occasions, it made me feel so much for the main character, and I couldn't put the damn thing down for nothing.

While I absolutely loved this story I know it isn't for everyone. It contains some graphic scenes with violence and sex and may not be for you.

4 stars

Victoria Sheldon is a young woman full of life, ambition and dreams. She moves into the big city to pursue her acting career, but faced with so many rejections and desperate to pay her bills, she turns into another kind of acting. The adult movies’ industry kind.
Jobs start coming in, producers and directors are requesting her and wanting to work with her. Victoria’s life is finally turning around, until a fateful email pops up in her inbox. A simple shoot, good compensation, normal looking crew. What could possibly go wrong?
For Victoria, everything.

I haven’t ventured outside of the romance genre in a while, but there’s only so many romance books with the same characters/plots/dialogue one can handle before losing the will to live. So I found myself stalking my GR friends’ shelves at 4m (as one does) to try to find something different.

Anna had rated this bad boy 5 stars and the blurb seemed quite intriguing so

I think we’re all well aware of the exploitative and predatory nature of the porn industry. Yes, some people do choose this profession for various reasons, have even “revolutionized” the industry by working on their own terms (cf. OF), but the vast majority are still pressured or basically forced into it by either other people or circumstances. Amadou Lamine Guèye said "Un OUI n'a de sens que si celui qui le prononce a la capacité de dire NON”. This roughly translates to “a YES only has meaning when said by someone who can afford to say NO”. The way I see it, when you have no choice but to say yes, there was never a choice to be made.

To be clear, I’m speaking of the people who are forced into this line of work by various life circumstances. I’m not addressing the ones who have a choice and choose to get into it. They do them, I will never be one to judge how people choose to live their life.

Now that that’s out of the way, there have been many reports of how the violent scenes on some of these websites are not acted but are real scenarios. I’ve watched enough Criminal Minds episodes to know it’s not a stretch to say these scenarios being real will only fuel some people to watch them more. That’s sadly the world we live in. Where people are hurt for others to watch and enjoy. It’s something, quite like Victoria, that I will never understand.

I quite liked the author’s approach to the subject. In the beginning, Victoria enjoyed her job. She was happy with her choice. She chose that , but she certainly didn’t choose what happened next. But who is going to listen in a world where women are still asked what were they wearing?

After tragedy had befallen her, those men hurting her in a way she will never recover from, Victoria’s life as she knew it ended. The thread tethering her to life was the thin but all-consuming one of vengeance. I was rooting for her so fucking hard. Mommy Lana Myers would’ve been so proud of her. Her plan, while not very well thought out in terms of execution, was genius and honestly just iconic. So twisted I started to feel bad for the bad guy at some point before remembering what he’d done and then I was like

Around 90%, everything we’ve building up to came crashing down on us.

Literally my face:

Matt Shaw, aka the sadistic author:

I’ve been thinking nonstop of the ending, and despite how heartbreaking, soul crushing and anger inducing it was, it had the merit of being realistic. Horrifyingly so.

Find me in the corner comforting myself with the fact Victoria might not have had the last word, but she did have the last smile.

Conclusion

Reading this book, I was confused at first about the fact it fell into the horror category. In my mind, and as someone who usually gravitates towards paranormal horror instead of gore/violence, horror was something that has you looking behind your shoulder, your skin prickling with unease. Something that sets off every alarm in your body and triggers your fight or flight feeling. This book, while horrifying in its very graphic elements and descriptions, didn’t necessarily evoke that prickly feeling I get after watching a demonic presence terrorize some hella unlucky family.

But then it clicked.

This book will you make you look behind your shoulder in unease. It will trigger your every alarm. Because the real horror is that at any given time, this is happening to someone somewhere in the world. To someone unsuspecting and more often than not, at the hands of someone unsuspected.

‘’If this ‘normal’ person is hiding this secret - what secrets do other seemingly normal people hide from the rest of us?’’

Stay safe my friends. 🤍

PORN is a seriously addictive read, I couldn’t put it down and read it in 2 sittings, that in itself speaks volumes. This is a disturbing read that seems to be going in just the direction your head and heart need it to go, only to pull the chair away just as you’re about to sit down and buckle in for what you think is going to be an immensely satisfying finale.

PORN comes with a wicked twist, one that I didn’t see coming, a complete masterstroke, one that turned an immensely satisfying and depraved revenge trip into a stomach hits the floor moment with a Oh! Fuck to follow.

Matt Shaw certainly grabs your attention with some of his book titles, Sick Bastards and Rotting Dead Fucks are two that spring to mind immediately and PORN is up there with them.

This starts in a similar fashion to the other stories I’ve read by Matt, disturbing first person narrative, flawed characters in abundance, a story that starts near to the end and then follows two timelines in the present and right back at the start of the tale, bringing them together with some sort of twist along the way. Really big fan of this method of storytelling and Matt Shaw does it really well.

A young failed actress willingly enters the Porn industry and as work starts to come her way, she gets a job that unwittingly catapults her into the extreme and a horrifyingly savage group from which there is no escape. This story puts your emotions through a roller coaster ride, shock, sadness, joy, repulsion, shocked again and finally stunned with a shovel. That’s what it felt like anyway.

Totally absorbed by this hard hitting and disturbing story, Recommended.

This is my first "horror" genre novel and my first Matt Shaw. It was definitely different than what I normally read - I have decided to challenge myself with something outside the norm (for me) every few books now - but I found it to be very entertaining.

I read it on one sitting, start to finish, so it definitely moved at a fast pace. I don't think I could read this genre every day or anything, but I know I will definitely read more from Shaw in the future.

It's difficult to write a review like this without spoilers, but I'll try my best.

And you know what they say? Any type of publicity is good publicity!

Porn isn't a good book because the content is too far-fetched. I wrote a story when I was 10 years old about it all being a crazy dream... How old is Matt Shaw then? It had me in disbelief by the end.

Am I supposed to believe that core plotlines are just figments of my imagination? Did I take LSD and magically make it all up? 👀

Back to Basics.
The main character is in financial debt and continues to pile unhappiness and pressure on herself. So she gets into porn.

I was hoping for a sordid descent into depravity. A story about making it big in the porn industry, enjoying the coke and expensive drinks, fame, popularity, wealthy mansions and amazing shooting locations, yachts, followed by the inevitable slump when the money dries up and no one wants to book you any more. Perhaps time to get some payback? Bitter, used up, afraid and vulnerable.

This is a short story about a woman who gets into the extreme glamour industry, spends a month enjoying it, gets mistreated badly one evening and goes on her vengeful spree. It has potential. That potential is totally wasted.

What's the message in Porn? Men treat women like scum? Women rise up and refuse to take it anymore? No. They continue to be treated like scum. If this is supposed to be a chick revenge flick, it's some weird misogynistic diatribe instead. Who is the target audience for this book? Can someone comment and explain what I'm missing?

Pick your tools and modes of dismemberment. Throw all logic into a blender and hit max.

It's badly written. Lazy sentences, churned out too quickly with the aim of shocking readers over and above quality content, with all sorts of grammatical mistakes and other errors:

"Tom looked down at smiled wider."

The weirdest use of an 'at' preposition I've seen in a while. Poor editing and sloppy seconds.

I keep on reading these books in search of something groundbreaking and shocking. I found Jack Ketchum and Cormac McCarthy. Stephen King isn't scary exactly but is an amazing storyteller. I enjoy Kristopher Triana and Ryan C. Thomas has some interesting things to say... the list keeps on growing.

But Matt Shaw (at least here) isn't very good or thrilling at all. Fortunately, this book is short, fast-paced, straightforward, packed with gory action and doesn't bog you down with complicated plots or character development. It's shotgun reading and a quick blast of blood and semen. It can be tossed aside.

The more you try to be shocking the quicker readers get desensitized, and if the writing quality isn't there either, they tune out and turn off. It did excite my ire enough to write about it, so there is that.

The most curious thing about Porn is it not being erotic or stimulating. Look at the title. I didn't feel a single twitch in my nether regions during this book. Maybe that's the point - too brutal to be sexy, but isn't that also a massively wasted opportunity? The chance to create something tender and sensual to arouse sexual interest and then smack it out of the park later on with brutality?

I don't think Matt Shaw is a skilled writer. There is little tension. Characters are one-dimensional, boring and dislikeable. If you want faceless splatterpunk or torture porn this could be ideal and I'm sure this isn't one of his best efforts.

I want to be shocked and pummeled senseless and will give Matt Shaw another chance because I'm confident he has it in him. It's throwaway splatter pulp after all for a certain mindset. Discard the intellectual sentiments and wade through a plethora of filth.

And where's the humour, wit and sarcasm? I read horror for the thrills, obviously, to also feel revulsion and disgust, other times to laugh out loud at silly moments like a naughty schoolboy who really shouldn't be that entertained. Porn takes itself seriously. Why?

Onto the next Matt Shaw book (I bought a stack for pennies), which will hopefully be better than this two measly stars. One star is reserved for DNF - it's the same thing.

If my BFF(Annie Wilkes):

Met this handsome fellow:

And they were to make a love child- her name would be Victoria Sheldon… You’d get something like this:

(I swear, I just realized her last name is Sheldon. The link to Annie Wilkes was merely based on her choice of weapons. Pure coincidence on the last name, but hysterical nonetheless).

She moved away from home in search of a career in acting. She acted alright- just not in the film industry she had hoped for. Everything is going great and she is surprised to find that she actually enjoys her new career choice. She went into hoping to pay bills until she caught a big break.

But then something awful happens to Victoria and the events that take place after are absolutely insane. The story took some turns that I was not prepared for. Some turns were better than others, and let me tell you that last twist right before the ending of this book is one that you will not see coming no matter how many times you are warned a twist is coming.

As far as the “extreme horror” goes…I’m not completely sold that it deserves all of the hype for that. It’s very reminiscent for me of the movie Hostel. Maybe I have spent so much of my time enjoying horror themed books and movies that it takes more to gross me out. I guess it would also depend on what grosses you out-for me the events in The Troop were far more disturbing.

Maybe, I’m just a sick twisted bitch? Who knows?

What I do know is my tolerance for gore is pretty high!

I was very surprised by this book. I went into it thinking it would be gimmicky and purposely over-the-top gore, but the story really was there. The writing was decent- just a little inconsistent. For example(do not click spoiler if you are offended by things of a sexual nature- it’s what some people would call graphic). . Stupid, I know but I just can’t help noticing stuff like that. Language needs to be consistent!

I would like to thank the lovely Kelly for being my Partner in Crime for this one…even if she did read it in a day while it took me 2 ½. ;) I might be the only on left on GR crazy enough to want to do another buddy read with her!

Get out there and watch read PORN

2.75 NOT FOR ME Stars

This is a well written story which completely grossed me out. The story made me squirm, gag and wish that there was some sort of light held around the corner.

"Did you know? I never meant to end up in this industry. I wanted to be a real actress..."

There isn’t a love interest or the promise/illusion of one amongst these pages. There is revenge and the sad twisted reality of the dark side of what lurks on the world wide web.

"So many film sets - how'd I end up on that one?

Honestly, I did like the story at first and the writing was good as was the presentation of the story. Still this is a big fat NO from me.

Wow! What the hell! That was totally disgusting and blew my mind! Make sure you defiantly read the warning for this book and BELIEVE it!!
I'm not really one to read a horror book without romance in it. But I decided to try this one out. It was really good. I'm pretty sure if this was my thing I would defiantly be reading more of Matts books. I will probably always cringe when ever I hear a chainsaw.
I think I will be going back to my romance books now. lol

Porn. It's not what it looks like. Or is it?

Ever the enigma, the porn industry has always been a controversial entity in the media world. Once forbidden and shunned by the masses, pornography has found a comfortable home with the birth of the internet and is now one of the biggest industries in the world. Gone are the seedy days of underhanded agents and the potential to be involved in a snuff film (mostly). In are the unions and pensions and healthcare. Porn really is going places...but not in Matt Shaw's latest extreme horror novel.

Victoria Sheldon is a star on the rise. Enthralled by the promise of becoming the next big adult star, she sells her soul to the porn industry and starts to become a household name. Then she attends an ill advised meeting and becomes the subject of a violent attack. Barely escaping with her life intact, she vows revenge on her attackers. It just so happens that sex can be a deadly weapon, one she uses to perfect effect.

First of all, if you're easily offended, disgusted by explicit sexual acts or porn as a whole, this book isn't for you. The book delves into the seedier side of the porn industry, one that's not as public, but is blatantly still in existence. Told across two time lines, the story details Victoria's revenge (present) and introduction to the industry (past). From the start, it's clear something traumatic happened to her and Shaw drip-feeds this to us across the pages, building the tension with aplomb. Portraying her as innocent and experienced on parallel time lines is a master stroke, one that generates sympathy for our heroine, despite her (sometimes) silly decisions, naïvety and trust in people she doesn't know. Which pretty much sums up the porn industry...and possibly explains why the unions and infrastructure was introduced in the first place.

Now, I'm sure Matt Shaw hasn't worked in the porn industry. And I could be wrong. However, the story on display here is brutally honest, graphic and very seedy. It's authentic too, the terminology is accurate and true. Of all his extreme horror novels, this one probably punches home the most. It might be the subject - sexual abuse and mis-trust is never pretty - but it arcs back to realistic horror, something I'm fond of. You don't have to be in the porn industry to be raped or beaten but when it happens under the veil of an industry that covers it up, then you know something is amiss. It's this abuse of trust and power that makes Porn so vivid and horrific.

5* - Absolutely. A short, gripping tale of an industry that is so enigmatic - with many blurry lines - that it makes you doubt that anything is wrong. Watching porn, it's sexual and distracting but it also hides the dark secrets beneath it. Sometimes, the porn star is literally a piece of meat and this story covers that in a controversial way that's...well, real. Sordid, extremely graphic - watch out for the chainsaw scene - and horrendously gory, this is a must for any hardcore horror fans. Just don't expect to get your rocks off on this. As the tag line goes, there are no happy endings. Great stuff!

"PORN" by Matt Shaw,.,.,., first off what the fuck is that title?

Second, why is so....goooooooood???? Like what i expect when i read this joke of a book is comedy gold or a disgusting disturbing read but nah, i get valuable insights on the inner workings of the porn and sex industry where most of the films that you see is highly likely to be non-consensual. Which is a message and a very important takeaway from someone who's..duh never been involved in any way shape or form in the sex industry.

This book is just about Victoria Sheldon, who has a dream to become an actress, forced by the harshness of life and reality, becomes a porn star, becomes popular, then a man offers a film deal that SHE CAN NEVER DENY. Not knowing that that film would be subjected to intense and more darker 'acting skills'.

And u know what i also get???

I also get one of the most SLAYYYYYY REVENGE stories in the history of every single 500+ books that i have ever read!!!

FEMININE RAGE LEZGOOOOOOOOO 😻😻😻😹😹😹😹😹😹😹 BURN THE WNOLE PLACE DOWN GIRLL, Victoria Sheldon is the ONE TO CALLL 🤙.

WE SUPPORT WOMEN'S RIGHTS AND WOMEN'S WRONGSSSSS... EVEN THOUGH TECHNICALLY SHE'S THE ONE IN THE RIGHT HERE, cuz being kidnapped-ish and forced to participate in a non-consensual sex film issss technically not your wrongdoing, you just kinda TRIED TO KILL everybody because of how they treated you, Victoria Sheldon is SUCH A DIVAAAAAAAAAAAAAA🍷🍷🍷, a BAD BITCH 💋💋💋, slay them all🔥🔥🔥 with that hammer and the chainsaw 🥰🥰.

Guysssss shes such a mood fr frr 😭😭, truly an inspiration on feminine rage, make her an icon asap! And not in the porn industry where she's forced to be innn. But in the acting industry where she's supposed to be 🫶🫶🫶. Make that revenge redemption arc be the most satisfying read in all of history 🥹🥹🥹.

I will not try and talk about the plot in this review because I can't without giving anything away- if you could call the following ramblings a review.

I went into this book with certain expectations, well it was recommended by Jahy (prepared myself for a crazy ride), this book totally surpassed my expectations and I think it mocked me at one time for daring to predict what will happen next!

description

So what do you call an author that navigates you through a journey, albeit a crazy, twisted and messed up one, then totally takes an unexpected detour that leaves you stunned! Well besides a great writer...

description

There was a twist towards the end which I totally hated, left me totally angry and wanting a rewrite...
description

However the ending of the book totally made up for it, this book will definitely stay with me for a while. Thank you Jahy for another great recommendation.

Wow. Just wow. This book caught me from the first page and did not let me go until the last. Shockingly disturbing and graphic in it's entirety and the end..... Well let's say I did not see that coming. Matt Shaw did in 150 pages what it takes most authors 400 to do. Never once did I feel the story was lacking or rushed. Not an easy achievement. Bravo and hats off to you,Mr.Shaw.

Well. This was deeelightful....if your definition of delightful starts with the word 'fucking' and ends with the word 'crazy'. Apparently that's my definition because while this story was disturbing, I also thought it was quite good. It's powerful stuff and though it made me cringe, squirm, and even at one point attempt to read with my hand covering my eyes (FYI: this doesn't work), I was completely riveted. While not the most disturbing or extreme thing I've ever read--that honor still belongs to R. Lee Smith's Heat, though for different reasons--Shaw's Porn is still high on the gruesome-o-meter. Be warned, if there are lines you wish not to see crossed, this story will not only cross them, but it will stomp them, decapitate them, and place the remains in your refrigerator.

As many have described, this is a story about revenge. Told solely from Victoria's point of view, the tale alternates between the present day and the past as she recounts the events leading up to her current circumstances. The shifting from the present day story to the past works really well. It not only helps maintain the suspense, but it somehow makes you feel more immersed in Victoria's psyche. And Victoria's mind is an extremely interesting place to be. I actually really liked her. Though I may not have agreed with all of her actions, I liked her honesty, for lack of a better word. I also liked her voice.

Another aspect of the story that was good was the trip we take into the porn industry. Though a brief glimpse, it was an interesting look at some of its inner workings.

So why the 3 star rating? The author pulls a fast one that left me feeling disappointed and cheated.

Aside from that very unhappy circumstance, there were also some minor editing issues: occasional tense shifts, odd uses of hyphens, and some typos. There was also the tendency by the author to reiterate things that didn't need to be reiterated. While these editing issues were not egregious, I still think the story would have been better served with some additional polish.

So, would I recommend this? Yes. Yes, I would. Despite my disappointment, I still think it's worth a read.

Final Rating: 3 stars

So whatever deviant I got this rec from….man I think I might be too soft to be your friend. This shit was hard to read. I read it, the whole thing, while having that deer in headlights look. This was horrible, fucked me… I’ll be shaken for days. Matt Shaw has a fucked up mind, if I saw that man on the street I’d cross to the other side. I’m not sure if I can do another book by him. Finished & needed a bath…by myself. One of those where you just sit in there doing nothing until the water gets cold. Afterwards took a long shower, because I couldn’t get clean.

I don’t know what star rating to give it….it was harsh. Did I like it…not really no, I would not wish reading it on my worst enemy. But was it well written, I couldn’t move forward without reading every damn word. Twisted fucks…five stars it is.

“Please…” I could barely hear Harry’s words as they came from his mouth, “kill me…”

I laughed.

This book was a perfect cooking lesson for revenge horror books. Here ;

Take a Word Document, add some fiction to it, then sprinkle a dose of realism. Sauté great scenes filled with creative torture, lots and lots of blood, revenge, rage and heartbreak. Finally add some mindfuckery on top! And Voilà there we have it....."Porn by Matt Shaw"!

The story was really good but the way it was presented made it incredible. You move through various timelines along with the FMC while reading it and you experience it all with her. It's such an emotional journey which includes both anguish and depravity.💔🖤🔪

And that ending. Gosh, don't even get me started. It was good but it was also such a mindfuck!!
It was diabolical and best kinds of insane.....but it also included a bit of heartbreak and lot of pouting on my side.

Some will hate the ending and some will love it so there's that lol. Highly recommended.

Make sure to check out Mareeva's review. It's entertaining as hell and does explain in a better way what I meant about that ending 😆

I'm sorry if I come across as being a bit of a dick here, but anyone who says this book is well written wouldn't know a well written book if it slapped them in the face. Okay, sorry. I do sound like a dick right?
Well let me explain....
Sure, it has shock value - kind of - but the writing is so flat, clunky and matter-of-fact that it left me rather cold and uninterested and instead of squirming I found that I was skimming and scanning to get to the juicy stuff, which for me, never arrived.
The story is straightforward and one of the few things liked about the work was that Shaw didn't try to dress the plot up with too much character backstory that would only weigh down what should be a lean beast. "Here's a woman torturing this guy with jump cuts to how she got there." Fine. But the problem is that while the violence should rightly be the focus Shaw cant write it well enough for it to have any meaning or reality. You read about things going into orifices and things getting cut off but the prose is so banal that Shaw, for me, fails to capture the horror, atmosphere and more importantly the detail of what is going on. I wanted to feel the pain and taste the sweat in that room with the poor bastard attached to the pillar. Allas I felt like a bored bystander.
Therefore, I noticed myself becoming very restless while reading and not at all thrilled or disgusted, which is what I was looking for.
I have only read this book by Matt Shaw and understand that some see him as a pretender to the hardcore crown but he has a heck of a lot of work to do to reach the heights of, say, Lee or Wrath.
Also, from what I recall, this book is incredibly short and unless you can get it for cheap it's really not worth any hard cash.
As I see from other reviews though I am in the minority here so maybe there was something I didn't get about what Shaw is trying to do but my advice to fellow hardcore hounds out there is that there is better elsewhere.
I'd recommend something like the Terratologist instead for a short, sharp stab between the eyes.

My mind is BLOWN. This book's super stealth plot twist rendered me speechless. I. Can't. Even. I need a few shots to calm my nerves down and some time to gather my thoughts before reviewing. photo Holdup_zps03195c86.gif
It's not often a book manages to catch me so fully by surprise. I'm still reeling, still struggling to formulate my thoughts. Needless to say, this was one crazy and hellish (and I mean that in the good horror type way) ride! Matt Shaw has managed to join the elite list of authors who manage to make me wince, cringe, and claw at my face in sheer terror.

More than once I found myself going

The content wasn't easy, but it was an easy read. It was easy to lose yourself in the story. To become immersed in this depraved world. To root for Vicky as she exacted her sick and twisted brand of revenge on the men who had wronged her. As much as I wanted to look away from the brutality at times, it had the power of a train wreck and I just couldn't.

I can't go into the plot too much without giving things away, but...well hell...my mind is still blown over certain aspects! I'd definitely recomend this book, but ONLY if you can handle extremely dark and graphic reads. This isn't a feel good story. It's not a romance, and there is nothing erotic about it. This is horror. It will leave you feeling raw and gutted in the end and have you questioning the type of people that exsist in this world.

My mind is numb and my chest still hurts.
Thanks for the heads up on this one, Jahy! MUAH!

I've processed for two days, and only accomplished a middle of the star chart rating.

First off, do Not read this book if you are easily offended by anything in the blurb. They're not kidding. I'm not squeamish at all but this book often had me wanting to scrub out my eyes. But ultimately it is impossible to unsee it. Or even if I could, my brain would remember.

Shaw is a powerful writer. He has a knack for grabbing your attention and holding the reader with tension. He's definitely creative and imaginative. Maybe a bit psychotic lol.

That said, I had to drop my rating for a couple of reasons.

((review continued after tending to grandbaby :))

One, there were several technical issues. Not a lot overall, but enough to distract. Several times I noticed a word used incorrectly in a sentence, and sometimes the tense of the narrative changed from present to past and back again. One time it even did it in mid-sentence. It wasn't often enough that I marked specific examples, but it was distracting enough when reading that I had to re-read the sentence to understand what was meant.

The other thing was the ending.

It was a gross-out. It was incredibly freaking disturbing, nearly to the point of being offensive. I'll give it a pass for that though, as I was warned by the book's blurb, cover, and description.

So yeah. It was well-written but damn, what a mindfuck. I actually give Shaw props for that. Keep in mind that I'm a big fan of Quentin Tarantino and Stephen King. And that I never get scared or overly disturbed by their stuff. This, however...yeah.

I probably won't read more stuff in this sub-genre. It's just not for me.

WTH, did I just read?

I'm all for books that mess with your mind but this one totally did a number on me. It was way TOO disturbing for my liking.

Bravo! Matt Shaw -- I didn't think it was possible but you have completely brought me out of my comfort zone.

The disclaimer is NO JOKE, seriously.

"WARNING: THIS IS AN EXTREME HORROR NOVEL. There is gore. There is bad language. There are scenes of a sexual nature."

I know a lot of my GR friends raved about this but honestly, I can't even rate this book. I will say that the story line was original & it was well-written.

Now, I desperately need to get a drink & find a light fluffy romantic read to help clear my mind.

Thanks Suzanne & Allure for the BR. There was no way I would have finished this book alone.

A horror novella entitled "Porn"! What isn't to love?

With the high ratings, though, I think I went in with exaggerated expectations.

The story is decent but a bit confusing. The flow is a bit rough. Shaw is telling a story in three parallel parts. One part of the tale is told by the jaded and wronged porn actress to her victim. Part of the story is flashback. Another part of the story is current action. At points, I had to step back a paragraph or two just to figure out where I was. That aside, there were points in this book where I winced at the action. It was brutal.

Frankly, it was fun!

...a whole lot of "meh".
I guess it's hard to scare or disturb me, because this author clearly was going for "shock value" with these scenes, yet it didn't do anything for me. Objectively speaking, the story is solid and the back and forth between past and present is always a great aid to keep the reader entertained. Unfortunately, I couldn't quite enjoy that either as the writing is extremely poor and thus distracting. English is not my native language and I still could tell there were a myriad of grammar horrors and correct punctuation in this book is pretty much non-existent: questions without question marks level of non-existent. Phrases like "Makes sense. That doesn't make sense" made me more upset than the goriest of the scenes. Had the writing been better, this book would have been a solid four stars; but as it is, I can't bring myself to give it any more than two. Hope the next Matt Shaw book I read has better proof-readers...
