Another winning novel from Tim Slee . The heroine, Charlie Jones, has a rough time sticking to one job. First it is with Australia's Security Service. Problems arose for her so that job was out. Strange as it seemed, she decided to become a nun, then not a nun, then a nun again. The murder of a priest and a young girl is the first in a series of murders, all of the victims priests. After awhile the police have two suspects, the tall beautiful neighbor of the first murdered priest and "Jones". Jones knows she isn't the murderer and after getting to know the murdered priest's neighbor, she is sure that she isn't the murderer either. Not trusting that the police will look further for the murderer, she decides she will do it. The characters in this story are well developed, some likable, some not so much. It is one of those books you don't want to stop reading until it ends.
Hi, not a true review as I wrote the book, but just some notes on how the novel came to be.
New Town started its life as a manuscript called 'Quack' which started its life as a thought bubble I wrote on a plane trip to Japan which I titled 'schizophysica'.
I had just seen a Ted Talk by Eleanor Longden, called The Voices in My Head, about living with schizophrenia. Around the same time I was reading 'The Age of Entanglement' by Louisa Gilda which is a mind blowing 'quantum theory for dummies' look at the implications of living in and not yet understanding that we live in, a quantum universe.
I put the two thoughts together, with a murder mystery plot I had been working on, and it became New Town.
This is book three of Charlie Jones, former Australian Security Service, sort of wannabe nun who has the Pope on speed-dial, and all around trouble finder. While it is the 3rd book it stands on its own and you do not have to have read the previous ones in order to enjoy this. Because of references to earlier escapades we know that Charlie is a bad-ass do-gooder with skills and can handle herself. A priest and his niece are killed in Charlie's neighborhood and she works with the police to try to figure out who did it. When another priest is killed she quickly becomes a suspect and then finds herself being targeted by the killer. It was a fast paced book with some good character development (some lesser developed characters that need a bit more attention.) The dialogue was realistic and humorous at times. The premise and action was realistic and not far-fetched. Sometimes these types of books depend upon stupid police but these police officers were not dumb or gullible, just one step behind the killer.
After reading this book I want to read the earlier two adventures, one of which includes the Pope.
I got this for free from Tim Slee and Goodreads in return for an honest review. Thank you Goodreadsand Tim Slee. I look forward to more Charlie Jones adventures.

I loved this book! I'll be honest I usually hate the tired trope of "I am a but I solve crimes better than the police do." I tend to avoid that. This is a strong argument FOR it. I don't do spoilers but I will say that, in this case, it is a nun... a very unconventional one. I enjoyed the story immensely and found the characters compelling and engaging. My only complaint is I wish I had read the first 2 books first. This is apparently the 3rd in a series and several references are made to what are obviously the plots of the first 2 books. It didn't lessen my enjoyment of this book at all - I just wish I had read them first. I had a great time reading this book and highly recommend it to everyone!
