All Beau Montgomery, one of Charleston’s most eligible bachelors, wants to do is build boats. He has no interest in marriage whatsoever … until it means he might not get his inheritance and he can kiss his boat building dreams goodbye. But the hungry hordes of Charleston debutantes looking to score a Montgomery scare him sh*tless. Luckily, his best girlfriend Gwen has found him the perfect out. Marry a member of the armed services by proxy! He’ll never have to even meet the girl! Though her emails are starting to become highly addictive.
Gwen has loved Beau Montgomery since she used to run barefoot around the marina as scrappy preteen tomboy. Knowing she’ll never fit into his high society family, she decided long ago that she’d become his indispensable best friend rather than not be in his life at all. When he tells her he needs to marry in order to fulfill his dreams, she panics that he might actually meet someone and she’ll lose him forever. So she hatches the perfect plan. A marriage by proxy! But when her chosen target proves unreliable and impossible to pin down, Gwen writes Beau a few emails just to keep the connection going before the big day. I mean Beau is never going to even meet this woman in real life so what does does it matter if the words are hers …
Natasha Boyd (writing romance as Tasha Boyd) is a USA Today bestselling and award-winning author of both historical fiction and contemporary romance. Her historical fiction novel THE INDIGO GIRL was long-listed for the Southern Book Prize and was a Southern Independent Booksellers' Association OKRA PICK. I was so happy when I discovered that Beau, who I met in Accidental Tryst, would get his own book. I already liked him very much in that book and he needs a fake wife to finally achieve his dream. I love a romance with a fake engagement/marriage, so I wouldn’t have minded if the fake engagement happened sooner. But I still really loved Inconvenient Wife. This book is funny, emotional and beautiful.
Beau is kind, determined, strong, passionate and talented. He isn’t enjoying his current job, but he’s working hard for his big dream. He can’t wait to finally have that dream. He’s so happy when he works on a boat, and he prefers doing it with his best friend Gwen. Beau enjoys spending time with Gwen. Gwen is sweet, caring, hardworking, talented and genuine. She wants to help Beau, but she wants it to be real instead of fake. She likes spending time with him. Gwen is very passionate about boats; that’s definitely something she and Beau have in common.
Inconvenient Wife is a slow burn romance. The author never made it feel that way and I love that. Beau and Gwen have been best friends for many years and they don’t want to ruin their friendship. They spend a lot of time together and they can count on each other. The author made it obvious that that friendship means a lot to both of them, but also that there were some romantic feelings that only grow stronger. It just took a while before they admitted it. I’m so happy that Beau and Gwen eventually found love with each other. I loved Inconvenient Wife even more from the moment they are together.
-- My honest review is based on an advanced reader copy of this book. --
I friggin loved Inconvenient Wife...eventually. Straight up, I was a wee bit frustrated for most of this story with how long these two knuckleheads fluffed around their love story. She's known for ages and he's convinced himself he's not for ages. Everyone else could see it, including me, so why the heck didn't they see it. KNUCKLEHEADS!!
So, I admit I was frustrated but I was also completely sucked in too. Natasha Boyd has a remarkable talent for just making the words flow. You're so consumed with the words, you don't even notice you're turning the pages quickly. The characters are people you get to know and grow to love. Charleston is a place I now want to visit. I loved hearing about living close to the water, having a pub that's a regular place to hang out, and knowing a lot of people you come in contact with. I was just so involved and felt a part of it all.
Better warn you, though, these two really do set your teeth to grinding with how long they fluff around love. She's trying to find him a wife that's not her and he's trying to make her his wife...without love, commitment and a real marriage. So bloody frustrating!! Don't expect them TO GET IT TOGETHER within the first half of the book as you will be sorely disappointed. It's a SSSSLLLLOOOOWWWW BUUUURRRRNNN...
For most of Inconvenient Wife I was thinking of giving it a solid 4 stars but the bloody ending changed everything. That ending, it was sooooo bloody good. I was even doing that teary, shaky laugh thing, where you're so consumed with emotions. That ending was pure magic and made the story the best it could be.
I am really enjoying this series and love getting to know Isabella Montgomery (the Matriarch) better with each instalment. She's a bit of a cranky old bat but she's finally realising that love and happiness are better than finding a partner based on their name or social standing.
Loved how Gwen and Beau's love story played out in the end, just wished that they got to it a wee bit quicker.
We already met Beau in his cousin Trystan's book ACCIDENTAL TRYST. And Beau's book takes place around the same time. The cousins' grandpa just died and left the whole business to Trystan - in the hopes he would move back to Charleston and reconnect with the family. And he left a huge piece of land and marina to Beau to finally get started on his dream of starting his boat-building business.
BUT ... poor Beau has to get married to receive his inheritance.
Beau is not a relationship kind of guy ... and Charleston is full of society daughters who would love nothing more than marry into the Montgomery family. Not happening!
Then there's Gwen. Beau's best friend. Only ... she's been in love with him for almost 20 years. He just doesn't know that.
Gwen doesn't want him to marry a stranger and maybe fall in love with his new wife along the way. Can she really watch that happening?
But can she marry Beau and have him not love her back?
Or does he mayyybe have his own secret feelings for her too?
LET'S FIND OUT!!!!! ☺

Awww finally back in Charleston with Beau!!! And we even get to see Trystan again.
Beau's story was just as adorable as Trystan's book. Not as funny, but just as great. We have funny moments, but it's a bit more serious ... he needs to get married asap. He doesn't want to lose his boat-building-business-dream.
That poor guy! If he would only turn on his manly brain and realize that his best friend is in love with him. They could've been happy together for years already!
But maybe they needed the time to grow up and whatever! ☺
Now's the time though. And it was really adorable and frustrating and sweet to watch them fight for that happy end!
And I kind of adored Gwen's dad and Beau's grandma! And the dog and Gwen's crazy friends.
This is such a great series, set in such a beautiful city - can't wait to read more Charleston books - Beau has a sister who needs to get married too!!!! Plus lots of single friends are available star in future romances! ☺
INCONVENIENT WIFE was such an adorable romance. I just loved it! Run to your nearest amazon for your own Beau - this one is MINE!!!
This is fun. I do love Beau. He is as clueless a man can be. So much fun reading his journey to figure out his own feeling toward Gwen.
While Gwen is very mature, she is also lost for words when it comes to Beau. Miss Boyd does not include too much drama in Inconvenient Wife. Instead she gives us a meaningful conversation about love, family and friendship.
Well, that's a rough start to my reading of 2020. I just couldn't get into this book. The writing was choppy and awkward, the MCs were extremely annoying and I just couldn't care less what happened to them. I'm sorry, I really tried.
This second book in the Charleston Series delivered on another well-written contemporary romance with a slice of the funnies. Beau and Gracie (Gwen) had been best friends from their teenage years and now in their 30s, everything changed, like a rug pulled from under their feet. It was both a scenario of unrequited love and friendship and I have to say, this friendship was fabulous reading. I loved their platonic connection as well as the chemistry, their banter and dialogue was such fun to read and the promise of something more was alluring.
There was a connection to book one, Trystan being Beau’s estranged cousin and it was fun seeing this book/story play out alongside the timeline of book one, so these books are best read in order.
Gracie was a heroine to really like. She was selfless when it came to two people, Beau and her dad. She didn’t take herself too seriously and I liked the slightly wild side to her. Beau was a dithering blind idiot over Gracie (although she had her moments) and I really enjoyed the palm to the face realisations.
The family element to this story was strong and more prevalent than book one. I enjoyed this and Gracie’s dad really hit all the soft spots in me.
I’m now anticipating book three, considering I’ve rated both these books in the series highly. Natasha Boyd can rock the contemporary romance genre.
Beau Montgomery has always dreamed of starting a boat building business. When his grandfather dies and leaves him a sizable inheritance, Beau sees the opportunity to make his dream come true. Trouble is, there's a hitch. To get his inheritance, Beau must marry.
Gwen Thomas' father owns the boat shop where Beau has refined his boat building skills for years. The boat shop, one of the last in Charleston, is up for sale. It's ideal for Beau, but he must buy it before someone else scoops it up. Thus begins Beau's frantic search for a wife.
What follows is a fast-paced, delightful, emotion-packed journey of miscues, false starts and dating train wreaks that will keep you up all night. I lost track of how many times I laughed out loud, and I had my heart broken a few times.
Boyd is known for writing character-driven novels and "Inconvenient Wife" is no exception. Beau Montgomery is strong, friendly and self-confident. He also owns a three-legged rescue dog named Eileen. Gwen Thomas, Beau's best friend, is about as real as it gets. She sells boats by day and helps her father in his boat shop at night. She's tough when necessary, but her heart is pure and she's sensitive, caring and generous.
So you're asking, why doesn't Beau ask his best friend, Gwen, to marry him? You'll have to read "Inconvenient Wife" to find out what happens when he does.
"Inconvenient Wife" is a gripping read full of twists and turns, a page-turner that will keep you up all night. You'll laugh. You'll cry. But in the end you'll be delighted because Boyd has again delivered yet another outstanding novel.
Highly recommended for readers of contemporary romance.
To my comfort zone. The place where I loved him. The place where he needed me and I willingly gave. Always. It was the same place that allowed me to help him find a wife even though I loved him myself.
Gwen and Beau were so blind and that’s what frustrates me to no end. I wonder if the whole fake wife for inheritance thing wouldn’t have happened if these two would still be in that weird “dating” but sleeping with other people “relationship.” These two were so clueless and the more time I take to ponder all of this the more I hate this “love” story. Is it love? Is it???
I read it in almost one sitting last night and actually really enjoyed it. It was funny and these two were good together. I was lost to the drama and shenanigans of finding a wife. It was the oblivious nature of Gwen and Beau that drove me crazy. They seemed very immature. I know it was out of fear of losing their best friend. And man was that emotional. But I wasn’t rooting for them. In fact their relationship seemed very toxic. It was super codependent.
I liked the town and the people. There are some really good characters here. I liked the story for the most part. I just wanted more.
Wow, what a struggle. The characters were so annoying and stupid! The writing was okay, but the main characters were so dumb that I couldn't enjoy the story. They behaved liked teens when in reality they are in their early thirties. Their non-communication was annoying, their push and pull was even more annoying and I never really understood why they failed to start a relationship. Okay, I know, especially Beau was too stupid. *sigh* And because they were in love before, even unconsciously, it was hard to relate to their feelings. Overall a waste of time and money! :(
And I never read a book I BOUGHT officially with a note "just a reminder you are reading an advanced readers copy". What!? 😕 Is that so? Quality management at its best!
"It was madness what we were doing, but I tried halfheartedly to care and failed spectacularly."
Inconvenient Wife is a slow burn, best friends to lovers RomCom that will have you smile wide during the whole book. It's light and funny with characters easily to fall for.
"I'm adrift in an ether that is focused on every sound she makes, every breath, every shudder, and has no sense of time or place."
Gwen and Beau have a friendship that makes you jealous. It's deep, caring, loyal and unbreakable. Their chemistry and the dynamic of their friendship is outstanding and wins you over right away.
Whereas Gwen realizes quite quickly she's been in love with her best friend her whole life, Beau takes his time. Oblivious to Gewn's real feelings he drops a brick after brick up to the point where he hurts her so much that it suddenly opens his eyes and really sees her. But how do you turn a friendship you are afraid to loose into something more? Well that's the journey you'll have to take while reading Inconvenient Wife.
Gwen is pretty awesome. She cares deeply for Beau and is prepared to give up the love of her life only to see him happy, to pursue and fulfill his dreams. Gwen is a funny, hot, sensitive, Disney loving woman who is not afraid to speak up and take action. She's totally someone you want to be friend with.
Beau is great. He's not only good looking but he is caring, self-confident and real. It's fun to see how carefree he is around Gwen and how natural he always seems to be gravitating back into her orbit. He's totally not only boyfriend but easily husband material!
"What is romantic love, if not a combination of friendship, respect, and buckets of sexual chemistry?"
With her outstanding writing style, Natasha found a way to tell Gwen's and Beau's story with a lot of humor, sincerity and sex appeal that will grip you from the first page to the last. It might takes it's time but suddenly BOOM you will desperately need something to cool you down.
Inconvenient Wife is totally a mood-lifting and page-turning RomCom not easily to forget!
""How do you spell love, Pooh?" Gracie asks me. ... "You don't spell it, Piglet. You feel it.""
With me liking the first book better, Beau and Gwen's story was still pretty good. Their inner dialogue was hilarious at times, and the two of them were just all-round nice people who were afraid of losing their best friend (i.e. each other). The issue of becoming a couple with the possibility of losing a friend was handled very well. There was one item though, that to me, was not handled well Anyway, "Inconvenient Wife' was fun to read, and I loved the ending. I also loved Beau's three-legged dog, Eileen. 4.5 stars.
I've always been a fan of marriage-of_convenience, but this one turned me into a lover of friends-to-lovers as well. This was a very fun and cute read. So perfect for summer. Read it :)
I had really enjoyed the previous book of the series, Accidental Tryst. It wasn't perfect but it was a nice, enjoyable reading.
This one, "Inconvenient Wife" was much more like many others of the genre. Such classification doesn't have to mean a book is bad. Yet, in this case, it meant little pleasure.
Too far-fetched intrigue (that I found out at the end of the story), no place to evolve the love. It isn't even a spoiler, that it was just "they were friends, she loved him for years, he loved her for years - they just had to connect the points". And although it doesn't sound bad (for an idea of the romance) it was made... boring, so-so.
Sometimes, with some books, I get the feeling that they are written because "the book had to be written" (mostly, probably, because of the money). And if someone is a good writer (knows how to write) often (even writing because she/he has to) you get "a correct book", but without essence. The essence doesn't have to mean something deep and thoughtful, just some kind of the core, an idea for the story, the thing that a writer thinks is a good root for the book. Unfortunately, sometimes a writer just takes a few components of the genre (like a couple is friends or foes, the family of the couple is loving or rather not, etc.), mixes them and cooks them - and sold it as a novel. When one is an experienced and good writer - it can go well, but, in my opinion, in most cases, it goes wrong. I think, this book was such a case.
PS I would have changed the title to "More" - it would have been more interesting, deeper, and meaningful - considering the story, because there were nice descriptions of what is "love", in short, that means you want more (more of the person, more seeing her, more happiness for him, etc.). "Inconvenient Wife" is more typical.
DNF @96% because I do not care about these people at all and it is not getting better. Dynastic scion of old money southern family just wants to work with his hands building boats and restoring the old family plantation (!!!!!) to its former glory. His belief that all women are trying to marry into his manipulative family and their plantation wealth is completely valid in the world of the novel where every character is cardboard and every woman’s career is chosen with men in mind. The nurse is hunting for a doctor, yacht sales women are looking for rich customers to marry, the heroine gave up her role in the family boat building business because she intuited the RICH hobbyist hero would want to work there at some point and he “deserved it”. Female friendships only exist to further women’s ultimate goal of marriage. in the year of our lord tinder/grindr/bumble/match/EliteSingles/Wingman/Hater/Yeezy.Dating adult women with access to computers AND cell phones actually place a singles ad in a NEWSPAPER. WTF is a newspaper?! I would ask WHAT YEAR IS THIS but it’s pretty clear that realities like the the time-space continuum or human behavior have no place in this book.
I read this book as an advanced readers copy for an honest review. I really enjoyed it. It is a quick, funny and touching romantic comedy. I have come to expect the best from Ms. Boyd. This book did not disappoint. It is the second book in a series, but can be read as a stand alone. I loved the characters of Beau and Gracie (Gwen). The story follows the 2 through a long and wonderful friendship into a crazy whirlwind of what can/can't happen between best friends. We could even visit Trystan and Emmie from the first book. The writing as always makes we want to visit Charlestown, South Carolina. Another great read from Ms. Boyd. If this is the first time you have read one of her stories, start with Eversea, and you will be hooked!
A slow slow burn romance, moments when I really wanted to shake Beau or encourage Gwen to do so. A goodish read overall, but not one I was intensely absorbed in.
I adore Boyd and have loved everything I've read written by her, but admit to being somewhat nervous starting this book. She is such an emotional author, and I was uncertain how I would enjoy seeing a lighter side to her work. I admit to be completely wrong, because this book was adorable and the perfect summer/vacation read.
I started reading this before realizing it was connected to Accidental Tryst. I was already smitten with the characters and couldn't stop reading. I never felt lost or cheated, and this can be read as a complete standalone.
I am a sucker for the marriage of convenience storyline and this is even better because Beau and Gwen are life long friends. Gwen is a lovable heroine and Beau is her perfect match, even if they don't realize it. While this is the slowest of burns, it is engaging. I found myself reading it one evening. As always with Boyd, the detail to the setting is spectacular. It was like I was part of Charleston's elite, or least on the outside looking in.
I look forward to the third installment of the series.
Man do I love a best friends to lovers story! Especially when they’ve been bffs their whole life.
“Darling it’s better, down where it’s wetter—take it from me.” This part, Beau saying this made me LoL! You have to read to find out why.😈
These books make me proud to live in Charleston, and I love when places and cities are mentioned. I squealed when Kiawah was mentioned because my husband works there!
This story filled me with happiness. I love when two stubborn people realize that they’ve been in love for a while. Swoonfest.
3.7/5 stars! Super duper cute! But once again: if the conflict can be solved by one truthful sentence from one character then you don’t have a legit conflict!! Regardless, overall, would definitely listen to again. I will never again underestimate the power of a discreet cover 🙌🏻🥵
This just became my new favorite Boyd Book!! I have serious mad love for Eversea, and have since the very beginning, but this book just shot to the top! That is saying a lot, well to me it does. ;)
In Accidental Tryst I felt myself wanting more of the family dynamics and full Charleston, southern experience. Don’t get me wrong, I loved it, I just wanted more. Well, hello INCONVENIENT WIFE. You delivered and then some!
I FLOVED INCONVENIENT WIFE.
This had everything I’ve come to love and enjoy in a Natasha Boyd novel. The scenery, the quirky characters, family ties, comedy, and some steamy love scenes! It’s slammed pack with it all.
I didn’t want the book to end. In fact, I’m already ready for a reread.
I FLOVED Beau and Gwen.
If I could recommend only one summer beach read this year, it will be this one! And you can read it as a stand-alone, but I would recommend ACCIDENTAL TRYST first, bc that grandmother, she is something else. I loved watching her change, or become more human from book one to this one.
I don't like to judge but I can't believe this is the same author. The H and h were so tragically boring as a couple and the sex was dry AF. There was nothing that connected these two as lovers, so I didn't fall in love with them either. Damn near 85 % of the book is them volleying back and forth of WTF!
I loved everything about this book. Beau and Gwen were such great characters. Natasha brought laughter, hotness and true friendship into this. It was such a fun, quick read, I didn’t want to put it down. I highly recommend this!!
This was a really sweet book. I really liked the characters (a lot!) and I loved their chemistry. I loved that Beau was not your typical cold and brooding protagonist. I didn't really care for him a lot when I was reading Accidental Tryst, but now I can't remember why. Beau is sweet, caring and everything you'd want in a person. Gwen complements him perfectly.
With Natasha Boyd's stories, you can always expect a story that draws you in and leaves you wanting more. Inconvenient Wife was no different. My only issue was with the ending of the book. I found it too rushed and didn't like Gwen's surprise for Beau. That might have something to do with me hating surprises. Also, this book advertises as a rom-com, and while it's packed with romance, I found to comedy to be a little lacking.
But. It was a really nice read that left me smiling AND it comes with such a cute cover! Recommended!
This is a really cute book. I enjoyed it just as much as the first book of the series. I liked the slow build of Beau realizing that he loves Gwen and the awkward way he fumbles through figuring it out. Overall, its a fun fun, lighthearted book with a happy ending. Hoping that there will eventually be more books added to the series.
