You’re one of the lucky ones – you lived through the global pandemic that eradicated seven billion people. You survived civilization’s collapse and the unspeakable atrocities committed by desperate people.
Now it’s two years later...and you’re still alive.
So are two intriguing groups of survivors living in close proximity on the Florida coast. The first, a harmonious community of highly intelligent people who reside on a former island paradise; they are determined to create sustainable quality of life. The other, camping in a Costco warehouse on the nearby mainland, a ruthless tribe of organized raiders who will stop at nothing to provide for their own.
Not only must they endure hardships and hunger in their ravaged world, fate seems hell bent to crush them all as a monster hurricane seethes in the Atlantic.
Everything I've learned about writing has grown from my love of reading. I began my writing career at the tender age of seven, when I wrote a play for my third-grade class. It was not an assignment; I did it because I discovered I loved creative writing as much as I loved reading. I received a children's typewriter the next year, and countless short stories followed.
I wrote some awful poetry during my teen years, then some not-so-awful short stories over the next two decades. I became serious about writing books ten years ago. The timing felt right, and I created the world-altering habit of writing every day.
My first published novel, Secrets Under the Mesa, began as a short story. I decided it had some legs and went with it. The inspiration for The Troop of Shadows Chronicles emerged from two directions: my love of post-apocalyptic fiction and a recent interest in disaster preparedness.
Stephen King says, "Talent is cheaper than table salt. What separates the talented individual from the successful one is a lot of hard work."
The hard work is worth it. I hope you enjoy my novels. I wrote them for fellow book lovers just like you.
I live in the suburbs of Dallas, Texas, with my husband and three spoiled rotten rescue dogs.
Island life isn't all sipping Piña Coladas out of a coconut any more.
A super virus wipes out all the dumb-arses. The world's clever people left behind are turned into backpackers and the world is their hostel. The location for the story has moved to sunny Florida, the former land of the newly wed, or the nearly dead. The author has posed several moral dilemmas that we have to deal with, but that's half the fun of this book. All the goodies (or are they?) group together in one camp and they're all moral-high-groundy types who don't believe in capital punishment and just expel wrongdoers like yesterday's poop. In the other camp we have the baddies (or are they?) ruled by a slavering, but gorgeous, psychopath. No quarter given here folks – if you misbehave, it's the bullet. It's an interesting concept. In a post-apocalyptic world, do you take the old-world rules with you, or create a whole new set of more pragmatic ones … or just have no rules? Good luck figuring that out.
There's a bit of “elderly romance” right at the beginning. I don't know about you, but I find the thought of lusty crusties having a bit of cranky hanky panky a bit disquieting. I closed my mind's eye for that bit, so they can have their knee-tremblers in peace. The lead up to the ending was quite dramatic and gave me a feeling of impending doom, but somehow, the ending fizzled a bit...just my dumb opinion though. The author has obviously put a lot of work into her writing style and the professionalism still shines through in this, the third book in the series. It's not really a stand-alone book, and I would strongly advise reading the other two first.
I was so sad to finish this third book. I will miss these people who became dear friends to me over the past few days. I may be able to get some work done now though, as I have done nothing but read since starting the series. Seriously, could not stop! Please don't let this be the end. I will think of the characters often and wonder what they are up to. Nice writing style, good editing, and a great story! Thank you Nicki Huntsman Smith!
I just finished the series and I am so disappointed. This is the end? Oh please no, I beg of you. This was the first books I have read of yours and I got in So much trouble with my husband. I would not quit reading until I finished one book. The next morning I started on the other one. I loved them all. Thank you so much for the entertainment I received. Please write more about these people. Please!!
Brilliant series - gutted there are no more currently available. Apocalyptic/post apocalyptic series with a difference which made it very enjoyable to read. Seriously hope there are more as would like to know how all the characters from book 1 onwards are doing, as well as new characters that we have yet to meet.
I have read all of Ms. Smith's books, and each surpasses the last. Moving with the Sun is truly captivating. No cardboard characters here--heroes and villains alike are three dimensional and so human in their actions and motivations. When the book ends, it is hard to let them go. The style and pacing is so compelling that I finished the book in just a few days; pardon the cliche, but I couldn't put it down. Ms. Smith does an excellent job of combining message with story--without any in-your-face proselytizing. Her themes are there for reader consideration, no black and white answers shoved down our throats. The book does make you think: about what people are capable of doing to the world and to each other, and whether human beings can ultimately band together in some greater pursuit. But it does this in the midst of an entertaining and intriguing plot. I can't recommend this book highly enough, and I can't wait for her next work.
A new set of characters, a new location, and a potential disaster looming on the horizon, how will our new and old friends navigate these new threats? Two new groups at opposing ends of the morality scale, or are they?
Another well-rounded cast of characters, well-written and developed. Excellent dynamics between all the groups involved. It’s a whirlwind of activity, a cat-and-mouse scenario, and am I detecting a theme here, are psychopaths abundant in this new world order? I wonder if you can have a "murder" of psychopaths? Fergus is on a deep undercover mission, and how to prepare for the incoming catastrophe?
Overall, another intriguing, suspenseful and entertaining read, I'm eagerly anticipating the next one.
I thought I was going crazy when it first happened. I was reading the same part of the story I had read before. Pages of it. Than it happened over and over again. Terrible.
This story was truly boring and out dated. Words used seemed like they were from the 50' my dear. I could not wait to finish it. Author should have stopped after first two books. I never have left this low of a rating. So disappointed.
Third book in the dystopian novel by Nicki Huntsman Smith. This novel took us to a new location and was fantastic. I had pondered if I could 'like' that there were people from well the middle of the Earth who were the cause of the world falling apart and who ended up living. But I have reconciled with it because I love the character Fergus so much. If you love end of days, doom and gloom with lots of adventure and even some humor, then this is the book for you!
A unique and totally absorbing apocalyptic saga with many differences from standard tales... All the action is watched over by an ancient race of " people " who are reluctant to intervene unless necessity requires the complete removal of the human race yet again. This series is totally enthralling and I am onto the next without pause! Character development is superlative!
It would have been 5 stars but I kept coming across duplicated material not just a few words. Sometimes as much as several paragraphs. The story line and characters were awesome though.
The first book got off slow Steven King style. However, this is actually a really good read. I like the multi-plot approach and how each chapter continues to character build. I find the subject line as towed the books this far. Showcases the best and worst of humanity.
...it's the second time I've read it, so I might not be objective. Well written, great characters, mysterious group involved in global shenanigans...what's not to love? Seriously, you won't be disappointed.
Continue this series with the adventures of Amelia, Fergus, Jesse, and all the rest. This post apocalyptic series has been a delight to read. I am looking forward to book 3.
I like the characters in the first two books better but this was a good read. Will probably read the last two in this series because I want to know how it ends. 🤷🏻♀️
