What happens when two of the most dangerous men in the world are now in civilian life? What if one of those men is living on a houseboat? What if bad, bad men throw a teenage girl off the end of his dock? If you are Jackson, you dive into deep water and save the girl. But, when the ingrate disappears into the mean streets of Phoenix you don’t let that stand. You recruit your old partner, Blackhawk, and together you take on two of the bloodiest cartels in the Southwest. Yeah, that’s what happens.
Great characters, good dialog, and a nice twist at the end. If you put Spenser, Travis McGee, and Reacher in a mixing bowl what came out would look like this. Good enough to Star #2 immediately.
I loved this book. Funny, plenty of action, but most of all I love camaraderie. No useless words, just straight to the point. I love when an author doesn't feel the need to add a bunch of information that is just to fill up space. Absolutely great read!!!!
This is a great story, it is very well written, the characters are great, the wording of the dialog between the characters is fabulous. The plot and storyline are excellent. Great Read for all who enjoy action packed mysteries.
Wow and Wow! What an adventure. I did not put this book down as I read all day! These two, Jackson and Blackhawk are the best of the best! You don't want to mess with them.
The book starts out and you just can't put it down. Jackson lives on a houseboat and late at night he hears men talking and looking out he sees them throwing something off of the dock. He looks like someone wrapped up in a tarp! Jackson dives in and tries to save the drowning girl.
But why were they trying to kill her? Now after taking care of her, she is off again. She told him that she didn't want to go home, she was on the streets, safe with a leader of a Mexican cartel, Roland. But, Jackson, keeps thinking of her and wants to find out if she is safe.
I loved the character, Boyce , and hope she continues to say in the series. The ending was a complete surprise to me and this doesn't happen often in books. This one has action, humor, love and two of the most dangerous men alive!!
Such a pleasure getting to meet the author and his wife this week and get so much story background and insight into each character. Appreciated Sam's writing style with short chapters that don't go on and on with too much description that you miss the storyline in the chapter. Unlike many books like this, the ending was not predictable to me. Humor and a clever way with words made it a fun read. Being a Phoenix resident, it was cool, sometimes eerie seeing streets and places in my own neighborhood! Sam is a great guy, extremely interesting and well-read and has made a new fan and follower out of me!
I don't think it's doing the author a disservice to say that the relationship between the two main gallant (and tough as leather) heroes here, Jackson and Blackhawk, borrows heavily from the Spenser series (at one point, Jackson tells us that he's reading a Robert B Parker novel; a pretty big wink, I'd say). As a jumping off point for a (sort of) detective series, this is good fun. It doesn't do anything new, but it's an entertaining diversion, and I'll probably revisit these characters somewhere down the line.
I enjoyed meeting Jackson and Blackhawk and the supporting cast but the plot was slow to develop and incredibly convoluted at the end. Seemed a totally impossible ending with very little explanation. Jackson and his many different feet or should I say "foot" makes him an interesting and unique character. However, I didn't need to know what he was wearing all the time or what he was eating for breakfast. These were among the many fillers to make the book longer. That said, I might read the next one because often the first in a series is not as well polished as the later ones.
I picked this up because it was number one in the series. I really enjoyed it. Good main characters, lots of action, fairly high body count but no gratuitous violence, good plot with some twists. You get hints about the characters backgrounds and you want to learn more about them. Recommended.
This book hooked me from the beginning and keep me turning pages until the end which came too soon. I enjoyed the humor along with the suspense. The characters were each interesting and believable. I am recommending this as a great read to all my family and friends. Anxious to read the next book by this author.
A young girl pulled from the deep and death as gangbangers turn to murder
Page-turning action, excellent characters, outstanding plot as the good guys are drawn into solving the rationale behind a circle of drugs and human trafficking which threatens to become an international scandal. Plenty of twists and turns. Well worth the time
Good first read of a series I could enjoy if they are all as good as this one was. The hero is a different type than the run of the mill ones in my previous offerings.
This book had all the requirements to keep me reading well into the night. There was action, humor, well developed characters, mystery, intrigue and a little romance. Very good balance. I have to get the next one because I still have some questions.
This is truly a guy type of series. Good guys, bad guys, mysterious cartels, drugs thugs, secret code identities, guns, K-bars and very ex-military. Make for a decent tv series.
Jackson combined all I like. MacDonald, Leonard, Parker and add Arizona (and Cochise) you have me. His story, characters and humor reflects the above three authors that delighted me over the years.
Loved this book!!! Everything was quite entertaining. The storyline, characters, and details were so different and unique. Jackson and his crew were created perfectly!! Loved it 💃💃
I think this may well be a series worth reading. The protagonists are a good team and they get the job done. Looking forward to reading more in the Jackson Blackhawk series. I rate this one 4.5 stars.
I was in the mood for a mystery so I started reading this one and was hooked from jump! It had essence of Rob!ert B. Parker, my favorite author. This book didn't disappoint! I will be getting the next book asap
I’ve read others in this series but decided to go back to the beginning. Not disappointed! Sometimes a bit violent, but the characters are so great I tend to ignore.
A good book influenced by Robert B parker, ironically the lead character reads a book by that author. Will read more in the future , if I have a criticism the twist in the tale did not catch me by surprise. !

I have had this book for a while and I didn't think I would like it and boy was I wrong I can say it was a very good book! And I can't wait to read more of Jackson black hawk books!
Slow and formulaic. I think this will drift into the eminently forgettable. Character is cardboard cutout and performs without much thought. Shallow all around.
I really liked this book as it combines John D. Macdonald's 'Travis McGee' and and Robert B. Parker's 'Spenser' with a modern timeline. I'm on the 3rd book in the series now and wish there were more than the current 5 (that I know of). Looking forward to more.
