This book is a must-read for anyone who has ever tried to energize or grow a ministry. Christian Coon takes us through his own missteps and mistakes as the co-founder of the Urban Village Church--as well as those of others working to do the same--and shows how failure can serve as a springboard to new possibilities and even a closer connection to God and what leadership means. Woven together with honesty, humility, and humor, Failing Boldly helps us learn to look on failure as an actual gift that can be the gateway to a deeper journey.
Although this book is geared for leaders in a church including clergy, I found that it is relevant to just about any life situation. What does one do after failing at something? Quit? Continue to try? And what about your mental state facing failure? Often frustration gives way to mostly negative solutions. What Coon suggests is to learn from the failure and try something else. Maybe the failure is leading to a totally different way at looking at the situation. He uses many illustrations including Steve Jobs who whose motto was "Be Different." Be creative. Failure makes one not only to different ways of doing the same thing, but actually doing something different, totally different. It's a fascinating read and I highly recommend it for anyone, including clergy.
