Here’s the thing – I admit I’m walking into a room full of losers. Why are these people losers? Because they all come into this room thinking the same thing – they’re going to make a lot of money tonight, and they’re going to make it with ease. But for me to be able to do what I do – someone has to lose. And that isn't me. Tonight is the night before the biggest game of my career. It might be the night I have been waiting on for the last year. But, before we move on with tonight, let’s back up a little because money is the thing I'm least worried about at this point. In order for you to understand what's really on the line, I'll have to catch you up.
I thought the way the author approached the book was really interesting…. In some ways it read like a screenplay where the actor talks to the audience in asides. I thought it worked really well and gave it a unique feel compared to other memoir style books.
I also enjoyed how the narrator combined telling an interesting story with some deep thoughts about philosophy (staying in the moment/meditation) and personal growth/relationships/self reflection. I thought that made it much more than just a book about a college kid playing poker.
I also liked the pace, the short chapters, the sign posting along the way. I thought that all made it an enjoyable read…. Even for a person like me who doesn’t play Poker.
