On vacation in Hawai'i, on O'ahu, and I stop in a local used bookstore in Kailua to look for something to read that will put me in touch with the local culture outside of my tourist bubble while I'm here. That's how I discover the great Ian MacMillan and this collection of extraordinary short stories. I haven't had a reading experience that so profoundly connected me to my physical place where I was at the time of reading like this since I read Moses Isegawa's, "Abyssinian Chronicles." In Isegawa's book he describes the massive sprawling Kampala, Uganda Bus Depot, and I read that chapter while I was staying in a roach invested slumtel overlooking the actual Kampala, Uganda Bus Depot. I'll never forget that reading experience. Sitting here on Kailua beach and reading these first-class stories that almost all take place right here on the winward side of the island, sometimes on the very beach I'm sitting on, is a pure joy. I could not be more thrilled by the humanity, craft, spirit, and local authenticity of these stories. I've gone back and purchased a novel and another collection of short stories by MacMillan and I intend on reading everything by him. Wonderful.
