The reason for the 1 star is the random uninformed transphobia (a cross-dresser is not a transvestite, and also this isn't the 70s the correct term is transgender), sexism, and anti immigrant racism. It's not a lot of it but it's still too much.
The story lines were SUPER interesting but as often with "cozy mysteries" it's the execution that's lacking. However, without the issues mentioned about this would probably be a 3 instead.
Other issues were the frequent typos and the common use of colloquial British English (for Americans). Sadly most editors edit out that for American audiences so none of us are used to reading it and the cycle continues. There was a decent amount of conversations I barely understood.
Cathy and her friends are annoying, wonderful, puzzling and strange. Just like real people. At first i was a bit annoyed by how Cathy acts as if she is none too bright, but ultimately I really enjoyed reading the 3 books that were in this group. I would recommend them to anyone who is curious about cozy mysteries from across the pond. It’s kind of fascinating to learn a bit more about life in another part of the world.
Got this thinking great something i can probably relate too. Read the first book and boy did it take a while. The main character can run away with anything. Her imagination takes off by itself. Her husband needs a good kick up the backside, her friends are all nuts or deluded. Got three books read the first, tried the second wont be reading the third.
Behind the everyday challenges of family home and work Cathy manages to root out some actual bad guys. With the help of a bevy of friends she sleuths and stumbles her way thru trouble and love. Great fun relaxing reads.
British writers should know that there is a diifference between discreet and discrete. More careful proofreading or copy editing would make all the difference.
