Hide out from my ex in Omaha while helping an old woman on her ranch.
One problem…
Her son Kurt O’Connor.
I should have known better than to get involved.
He’s tall, a pillar of muscle, icy blue eyes… and cocky as h*ll!
He doesn’t just want my body.
He wants all of me.
I must resist.

I really wanted to support this author because of the whole “Cocky” TM drama and I thought the new title was awesome. But I could not get through this book.
I didn’t like the writing, it was hard to follow. The characters were just too strange. I just didn’t like it.
I wish the best for this author and I totally give her props for the new title.
I enjoyed this book. It wasn't the typical cowboy romance novel, which made it all the better. I liked the air of mystery in this story and enjoyed the who done it aspect. Even though I figured out the culprit early on, it didn't take away from the plot of the story.
I liked that the author tried something different. It is always scary for writers to create outside of their comfort zone and I am sure this one was no different. Good job.
The first chapter was really good but so many good sub-stories were ignored. The time jumps were confusing. The sex scenes were backwards. The ending was rushed and a lot of things left unexplained like the wolf and the sheep. Nancy and her daughters story just stops, first their house is going to be destroyed by nature, then it becomes a fire.
Very disappointed with this one because it had sooo much potential, one brother didn’t have enough story line to be a believable villain, the other brother went from cocky ass hole to love sick puppy without any real interactions. No real insight on her life in New York. And how did Rita survive or know where she was? Why not just call her from the beginning? Why did he shoot his partner and what was his deal??? Why is Sam never on the farm?
I received an ARC copy of this book and decided to voluntarily leave a review. Usually I loved anything this author writes however, this time I just couldn't get into the story. I felt like the story was missing something. I didnt like the heroine at all she was immature for her age. I also figured who the culprit was long before the cornfield scene. I loved her previous cowboy romance with Aja and Steele but this one just wasn't my cup of tea. However, this is just my personal opinion and I hope it doesn't stop someone else from reading.
Some days you just wake up wanting to read something ... cocky. No, not about chickens. Even though they sure are cocks. Nah, we're talking stubborn heroes ... arrogant ... know-it-all. You know ... cocky. Well, fortunately The Cockiest Cowboy to Have Ever Cocked was there to fill the gap. I haven't finished it yet. But this is the place to get your cocky fix. Cause, "cocky" isn't always such a pretty look in real life. Can overreach. Can look pretty desperate ... especially in a legally obtuse romance writer. So keep on keeping on with your cocky characters, Jamila. You know where they belong -- in the pages of your books.
I bought and read this book mainly because of the cocky drama. While the book was all right it wasn’t anything special and it needed some editing work. I wish the author the best of luck and will likely read her work again.
Even though I mostly stick to fantasy, I do enjoy reading romance novels every now and then. I chose to give this author a chance on a whim and mostly liked the book.
Nicki is a 45 year old black detective from the NYPD that wanted a change of pace after she finally left her abusive husband Dominic. A friend brings her to the farm of an elderly woman named Samantha and Nicki earns her rent by doing farming chores.
Sam has two 30 something sons that surprise the protagonist. Dieters is a pathological gambler that acts a bit rude to her whereas Kurt stuns her by how arrogant and cocky he is. The fact that the first impression of the brothers was seeing Kurt aim a rifle at Dieter's head for no logical reason hinders any hopes of a relationship.
Of course, this is a romance novel and as the story progresses, Nicki and Kurt start to feel a strange attraction with each other that the age difference and racism in Omaha can't stop.
The book develops at a steady enough pace and both characters seem rather interesting. Nicki was officially brought to live with Samantha to discover who is killing her sheep and the motive, so the story develops as a mystery and a romance novel. Unlike many other books of the genre, there are only 2 sex scenes (albeit quite steamy), so if you were only here for the romp, you might feel left out.
I was initially born in the Midwest and while there is indeed racism, it isn't so blatantly obvious. I spent 2 summers in Kansas City and never saw any Ku Klux Klan wannabe nuts riding horses left & right. I can't deny there might be some drunken looneys harassing people in the very little towns, but Omaha has around 1 million inhabitants (if you count the surrounding metropolitan areas). I've never been there, but if its any similar to Kansas, I don't think Nicki would have been socially rejected because of her skin color. The locals might have thought she was odd because she's from NYC though.
Some of the side stories of the novel are mentioned, but left forgotten. Sam has a neighbor family with an openly lesbian daughter that sort of befriends Nicki. Kurt is very good at making handmade leather goods and while we enjoy a scene where he gives a wallet to Nicki, the other project he was working with is never mentioned. We know a bit about Dominic, Nicki's abusive ex and while there is a brief mentioning of him sending her nasty voicemails, the story is also left aside.
I personally think there could have been more done to the story, but perhaps the author wanted to keep things simple and maintain a lower word count. The oddball climax of Nicki's kidnapping seemed rather rushed in my opinion. I also found it odd that she awakens in the hospital from septic shock but she wasn't intubated in the ICU. It's the little details that might not affect the flow of the plot and the mystery of the haunting (the book never explains how that was done either...), but if the plot had been really well thought from the start instead of throwing off a rushed ending from the bottom of the hat, it would have been an excellent story.
It was however a pleasing read and rather different from other romance novels out there. I give it 3 1/2 stars.
The O'Connor family was in a tizzy to find out why their ranch was being haunted. Sam O'Connor, the widowed matriarch of the family, hired Monique "Nickie" Bridges, a former New York detective to get to the bottom of this situation. Not being superstitious, Nicky did not expect to get in the middle of the dualing brothers Kurt and Dierks O'Connor, Sam's sons. Neither did she expect her life to be endangered because of her investigation and the blatant racist prejudice of some of the Nebraskans she came across. Someone wanted Sam off her land and she had to figure out why. There was a big reason why Kurt and Dierk did not get along too. Neither did Nickie expect to fall for Sam's sexy arrogant son Kurt.
Jamila wrote an entertaining mysterious suspenseful romance about a young woman, running from her ex to what she thought would be the quiet of country Nebraska. Nicky was newly divorced did not expect to that she and Kurt would fall in love. She was in a strange new place and strange people. She had to adapt to farm life being a city girl and had to deal with tornadoes, fires and kidnapping. After the mystery of the hauntings were solved, she and Kurt planned their lives together.
If you like romance stories with action and mystery, this is the story for you.
Nikki our h, is a former New York city police officer turned detective. She goes to Nebraska for two reasons. First, to help a friend of a friend. Second, for a fresh start. When she arrives at Samantha O'Conner's (Sam) ranch, she meets Sam's two sons Kurt and Dierk, who don't get along at all! Kurt warns her to stay away from Dierk and Dierk tells her not to believe a word his brother says. Everyone says the ranch is haunted by Sam's dead husband but after the sighting of a werewolf(that's right, werewolf) and dead livestock, Nikki is still determined to handle it like any other case. Kurt desires Nikki and isn't trying to hide it. Nikki is face with fighting (but not for long) her growing attraction with Kurt. Digging for secrets that everyone has but don't want to reveal. A twister, Klansman raids and kidnapping. Oh my! This story had so many twist and turns but, in the ends justice and love prevails. I would recommend this book Steamy. Mystery. HEA.
Bravo, Jamila Jasper! This was such a good, sexy novella to read. I thoroughly enjoyed the plot, the mystery and of course, the hot love scenes. I think it's awesome the author fought back against that whole #CockyGate situation and republished this book in Kindle Unlimited under the new title "The Cockiest Cowboy To Have Ever Cocked"and we got ourselves a treat. A cocky protagonist with a heart of gold (Kurt), tames the damaged, yet determined lady detective from the city, Nicki. I liked that we are dealing with a mature woman in her mid-40s who has some baggage but despite that is able to find love while enjoying hot sex with a very mysterious back plot to boot. You'll enjoy this.
Kurt's mother owns a ranch and he's as arrogant and cocky as they come. Nikki was hiding out in Omaha from her abusive ex and Helen, a mutual friend introduced her to Sam, Kurk's mother and the owner of the ranch. She agreed to let Nikki stay there in return for some detective work re her neighbors, the Brody family and who was doing damage to her farm. Kurt and Nikki begin a hot relationship. No spoiler here, but this is a well written book with lots of surprises. I read a reader copy and voluntarily chose to write a review.
When her ex refused to give her up, Nicki took a job out of state to help a farm wife and escape. Now the suspect is closer than they think. Will Nicki be able to discover who it is before it is to late? Will Nicki allow her heart to heal along the way?
Definitely loved the differences of the older city girl and the younger cowboy. I did at time think that Kurt was a little immature, BUT overall thought that he came off as a good guy. I didn't blame Nicki for her hesitance, but was proud when she shed the chains of her ex. Good read!

3.5 stars I have mixed emotions when it comes to this book. It is different than what I expected but fell a bit flat as it was too easy to figure out the offender. I support the author for wanting to put out something unlike what is currently on the market. I would suggest focusing on consistency with the characters so that there is no question about his/her status and also other aspects of plot development so that the inconsistencies are not so overt. I volunteered to read a copy of this book.
Recent ridiculous drama prompted me to step outside my usual sub-genres and give this book a try. I am very pleased that I did!!
Solid main characters, believable plot and complications, intriguing mystery...thank you Jamila. I like that some of the real world challenges that a BWWM couple like Nicki and Kurt face are in the book instead of everything being fantasy world perfect. One thing I enjoyed most is that this novel focuses on the romance not the sex. If I wanted porn I'd buy porn. I much prefer to spend my money on a multi layered love story like this one!
This is my first read by this author. I can’t say I loved this book but I’ll admit, the plot and it’s suspense, mystery and twists kept me interested. That need to get the answer is what propelled me to finish the book and for the rating of 3.5 stars. Unfortunately, I could not seem to warm to the characters in the book. All of them seemed fake and untrustworthy, which blocked me from engaging. I received this book for a voluntary, completely honest and non incentivized review.
Oh man...this book just was NOT for me. I barely finished it as it just absolutely did not engage me in any manner. Had to be the slowest nine chapters I’ve ever read! The storyline was meh. The characters way below par for this writer. The plot was weak—really weak. HEA? Not exactly...or I missed it in my desire to be finished with the book.🙄 (I voluntarily reviewed an advance reader copy of this book and was NOT impressed.) 🙁
This was a great book overall with a great storyline containing intrigue, mystery, and romance. Nicki & Kurt's story was interesting. Kurt was truly entertaining. Nicki as a detective from NYC was hard to believe. Her investigative skills were along the lines of a rookie officer, not someone who worked their way up in the ranks to become a detective. Nancy Drew would've solved this case with her eyes closed.
Wow....I really really enjoyed reading this book. Well developed and written, beautifully detailed with a great cast of characters. Strong and stubborn h/h but with intense chemistry and love.
Captivated me from start to finish, and kept me entertained throughout lots of twist and turns. Admirable realistic writing style, classy and intriguing. I have no hesitation what so ever in recommending this book. A MUST read. Thank you JJ 😀
I don't normally read American cowboy erotica. I picked this up to support Jamila who'd been slapped with threats from THAT Hopkins woman and forced to change her titles by Amazon. And to be honest, I really wasn't expecting very much.
It was better than I was expecting, a mystery with a few hot sex scenes. It could still do with an editor's eye, but in all, I enjoyed it as a quick, steamy read.
This was one of the longest and drawn out story that I've read in a very long time.I mean at some point I kept silently pleading with the writer to end it already! This was an okay read not something I would revisit. The characters were okay ,just the writer doesn't let you really like them or want to.Also after a moment you don't care what the story is about. This was just okay and it moves just like a lazy river.
Alrighty, I’m giving this book 5 stars because of the most epic response an author ever gave to the entire cocky gate incident... That being said, I do have some issues with this book. There was some editing errors that distracted from the story (I mean no chapters?! What?!) unbelievable dialogue and scenes, this story could have been fleshed out so much to contain more back story to give depth to the characters and story. This story seemed very one dimensional.
GOTTA GET IT!!! A well written, easy to follow read with twists and turns that keep you captivated from the first page until the very last word. An exciting story line, irresistible characters with electrifying chemistry that's almost palpable. Jamil did an excellent job bringing this brilliant tale to life.
A plot to force out family for money. Bold open hate and racism within a family. Evil plots all in the name of hate and money. I liked the mystery and the love story but this ended with more questions than real answers. There were errors in spelling and grammar that editing should have caught. Overall a good story that felt incomplete.
A wonderful book about a woman ( nicki)who has a ex boyfriend and she meets a cocky cowboy who wants a sexual relationship with her and the sex is earth shattering.
They fall in love and want to be together.
A book that has love and supense and that you wont be able to put it down to the end.
"I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy of this book."
Different slant on usual. Liked the way main character was portrayed as this hard ass when in essence she was a hurt, abused woman with trust issues. Liked how she author allowed main character to become a trusting person capable of love again. Would’ve liked some insight to her life in New York and what happened after case was solved. Good book.
I liked that there was no hidden feelings in the book. Although Kurk and Nicki liked each other, it was clear everyone was not happy about it, or her in general. I really loved that Nicki was a woman in her mid 40's. So many books show women and men in their 20's and 30's. There was just enough excitement to keep you on your toes.
I was surprised at how much depth and wisdom Nicky has. She is in a pretty difficult job situation and is jaded by her former relationship. In the end it turns out different than I expected. I thought for a while this was a supernatural story but what actually happened is still a bit unclear. Nevertheless it’s worth reading!
Enjoyable read with nice twists in the story. Well written and I like the storyline and plot. The characters are well developed and described. The chemistry is hot and they are likeable. Worth the read.
While this was quite an interesting book for me it was not a great read,I kinda liked the mystery and wanted to find out everything that was going on but I did not really get the characters i did not really like them but that could just be me it is worth a read just for the mystery though.
An amazing book. Extremely entertaining, captivating and interesting sexy read. I could not put it down. Wonderfully written with strong characters. I want to read more from this author. I voluntarily read and reviewed an Advance Reader Copy of this book.
