About the author

In 1923, Stone received his bachelor's degree from the University of California, Berkeley. In the 1960s, Stone received an honorary Doctorate of Letters from the University of Southern California, where he had previously earned a Masters Degree from the College of Letters, Arts, and Sciences.

When at home, Stone relied upon the research facilities and expertise made available to him by Esther Euler, head research librarian of the University of California at Los Angeles, to whom he dedicated and thanked, in addition to many others, in several of his works.

Stone enjoyed a long marriage to his wife and editor on many of his works, Jean Stone. The Stones lived primarily in Los Angeles, California. During their lifetime, Stone and his wife funded a foundation to support charitable causes they believed in.

Stone's main source for Lust for Life, as noted in the afterword, were Van Gogh's letters to his brother Theo. It seems probable that Vincent's letters to and from his own brother Theo provided a foundation for Adversary in the House. Stone additionally did much of his research "in the field". For example, he spent many years living in Italy while working on The Agony and the Ecstasy. The Italian government lauded Stone with several honorary awards during this period for his cultural achievements highlighting Italian history.

کتاب، علارغم حجم بسیار زیادش، تمرکز خودش رو روی تفکرات و تحقیقات زیگموند فروید گذاشته و کمتر به مرور زندگی شخصی ایشون پرداخته. گواه این ادعا جاییه که مرگ و مراسم تدفین دختر ارشد دکتر فورید و احساساتی که فروید در اون زمان بهش دست میده، تنها در کمتر از یک صفحه بیان میشه درحالی که گاهی روان کاوی خواب یکی از بیماران فروید بالغ بر ۵ صفحه از کتاب رو به خودش اختصاص میده. درواقع زندگی شخصی فروید تا آنجایی در کانون توجه قرار داره که هنوز کار اصلی و مطب خودش رو شروع نکرده. البته این موضوع ممکنه برای آن‌هایی که تنها به دنبال شناخت تئوری‌های دکتر فروید و منشاء اونها هستن بسیار جذاب باشه. بهرحال بجز چند جابجایی اثر گذار به پاریس و رم، مابقی زندگی فروید در وین و در کنار خانواده‌ش میگذره و به نظر نمیرسه در مورد اون مسايل چیز زیادی برای کنجکاوی وجود داشته باشه. اما مناقشات فروید با جامعه پزشکی وین و چه بسا سراسر جهان از هیجان انگیزترین و چالشی‌ترین قسمت‌های این زندگی‌نامه‌ی بلنده که اتفاقاً بسیار خوب و مفصل بیان شده. این موضوع در زمان جنگ جهانی به اوج خودش میرسه

به همین دلیل دیالوگ‌های کتاب بسیار بی‌کیفیت و عجیب غریبه. ابتدا فکر کردم که مشکل از ترجمه ‌ست اما وقتی چندتا از مکالمات رو با نسخه انگلیسی مطابقت دادم متوجه شدم که ترجمه، تنها کار رو بدتر کرده و بسیاری از جملات و پاسخ‌های نامرتبط شخصیت‌ها از منبع اصلی و اروینگ استون میاد و شدیداً حس میشه که صرفاً برای خارج کردن کتاب از حالت‌ جستاری، مکالماتی خصوصی، اون بین‌ها گنجانده شده و هیچ هدف دیگری نداشته. این مکالمات بیخود، به همراه نام‌های زیاد و جزئیات مکان‌ها گاهی انقدر تکرار میشن که راهی جز اسکیپ کردن اونها باقی نمیمونه.

از طرفی ترجمه کتاب رو به هیچ وجه خوب نمیدونم و با متنی چندپاره و غیر یک‌دست طرف هستیم که گاهی مطالعه رو به شدت خسته‌کننده میکنه.

اما در نهایت جزئیات عالی روان کاوی‌های فروید و پرداخت فوق العاده‌ی درگیری‌ها و انزوای ایشون در جامعه پزشکی آن زمان وین و اروپا، انقدر خوب هستن که ارزش مطالعه هزار صفحه رو ایجاد میکنه

مشکلی که با تمام کتابهای ایروینگ استون دارم این است که همه چیز به طور تمام نشدنی کش دارند. به نظرم مردم قرن پیش حوصله و وقت بیشتری برای خواندن کتاب داشتند و برای همین نویسنده تا این حد تشویق میشد به جزئیات بی مورد بپردازد .اما از حق نگذریم که مولف حس بی طرفی را نگه داشته و حتی جاهایی با فروید مهربان هم هست. گویی همذات پنداری قوی با فروید داشته و رنجی که برای روشنایی کشیده را تمامن درک کرده است. کاری به این ندارم که مبانی روانشناسی فروید امروزه چقدر درست اند اما اینکه انسانهایی در هر جای تاریخ به خود جرات داده اند و سوال پرسیده اند حتی اگر جوابهای غلطی هم پیدا کرده باشند باز هم در جهت رشد و اعتلای انسان پرچم دارند. چیزی که تمام کتاب حس میکردم این بود که چقدر عقل و دانش در برابر جهل انسان بی دفاعند. چقدر فکر درخشان که گرفتار ظلمات جهل میشود و در نطفه خفه میشود . و چقدر انسان راه دارد برای رسیدن به اوج خودش.

Irving Stone spent a lifetime writing great, huge, ponderous novelised historical biographies. No one has ever accused him of vivid prose or crafting memorable characters. But he's readable, and I grew up reading his biographical novels about Darwin, Schliemann, Michaelangelo, and Freud and finding in them my introductions to places and times and ideas I might otherwise have missed.

I read "Passions of the Mind" in high school--- my first introduction to Freud and to fin-de-siecle Vienna and the Habsburg Monarchy. I was fascinated enough with Vienna and its twilight to ultimately go on to do a PhD based on Habsburg studies, and Stone's account of Freud's life sent me to read about the history of psychoanalysis and ultimately off into critical theory.

This is a slow, ponderous book. But it's a good introduction to Freud and his life, and it's full of period detail and research. For all Stone's failings as a writer, this is a book I remember fondly and one I will recommend here.

کتاب شور ذهن شرح زندگی و فعالیت های زیگموند فروید، عصب شناس، روانشناس و روانکاو مشهوره. این کتابو اتفاقی توی کتابخونه دیدم و از اونجایی که به بیوگرافی علاقه دارم و داستان اگه واقعی باشه بیشتر بهم میچسبه کتاب رو خوندم. تصویری که از فروید توی ذهنم بود مربوط میشد به کتابای درسی دوره دبیرستان که ذهنیت منفی بود ولی اونجوری که ایروینک استون شرح میده فروید یک شخص کاملا پایبند به مسائل اخلاقی و خانواده دوست بود یه جورایی تا آخر داستان متوجه میشید که اون برای خانوادش نقش پدرخوانده رو داشت فروید یه انسان پیشرو بود و مسائلی رو بیان کرد که دیگران جرات مطرح کردن اونا نداشتن و با وجود تمام مخالفت هایی که جامعه پزشکی و روانپزشکی، گروه های دینی و حتی مقامات سیاسی و دولتی با تئوری های اون داشتن، باز هم از دیدگاه های خودش صرف نظر نکرد و بالاخره جایگاهی برای خودش و افکارش در سطح جهانی پیدا کرد. اینگه دیدگاه های اون تا چه اندازه با واقعیت منطبق هست حداقل من علم کافی راجع به اون ندارم. همونطور که اول کتاب توصیه کرده خوندن این کتاب برای دانشجوهای روانشناسی خیلی مفیده این کتاب منو به رشته روانشناسی و روانکاوی علاقه مند کرد و دوست دارم کتابای فروید رو بخونم البته اگه بتونم پیداشون کنم.

کتاب خیلی خوبیه بخصوص برای دانشجوهای روانشناسی
اما میتونست حجمش کمتر ازین باشه چون کلی از حجم کتاب به توصیف درباره جزئیات پرداخته شده 👍
این کتاب مطمئنا نظرتون رو راجب فروید تغییر میده و دید مثبت تری بهش پیدا میکنید
با خوندن این کتاب با کلی از روانشناسان و روانپزشکای معروف دیگه هم اشنا میشد از جمله ژان مارتن شارکو، یوزف برویر ، هیپولیت برنهایم ، کارل یونگ و...
در ضمن درباره مهم ترین بیماری ک آغازگر روانکاوی بود یعنی: آنا او(برتا پاپن هایم) هم مطالب مهمی نوشته شده

کتاب بسیار دوست داشتنی ای بود. تقریبا یک سال طولش دادم تا بخونمش و تموم شه. یه مقدار ترجمه ش یه جاهایی بد بود (مثلا بخش های آخرش راجع به آیدی و اگو و سوپراگو) ولی اگر اساسا با حرفای فروید آشنایی داشته باشید میشد فهمید چی داره میگه. از بیوگرافی هایی هستش که خوندنش رو توصیه میکنم.
زندگی فروید هم مثل زندگی تمام شخصیت های بزرگ تاریخ پر از پیچ و خم بوده. و خب نهایتا دستاوردی براش داشته که خودش هم باور نمیکرده بتونه بهش برسه.
بیشترین چیزی هم که برام جذابه تو بیوگرافی ها مشکلات اصلی زندگی اون فرده. به نظر من بزرگ ترین مشکلات فروید برمیگرده به دوره پیریش و همزمانیش با جنگ های جهانی. یعنی تمام سالهایی که در تنهایی برای دفاع از تئوریش میجنگیده رو میذارم تو یه کاسه و از 60 سالگیش تا پایان داستان هم بار فلاکتش یه کاسه.
در ضمن من عاشق بازی با تیپ های شخصیتی مایرز بریگز هم هستم (که خنده داره چون اساس کار این تیپ بندی برمیگرده به کارل یونگ :)) ) و به نظر من فروید بیشتر یه INTJ بوده نزدیک به میانه
خیلی ها چون اعتقاد دارن INTP بوده و به طور شدید

This fictionalized biography of Sigmund Freud managed to endear itself to me despite the fact that as fiction it’s stilted and verbose to the point of stultifying, nothing at all like Stone’s excellent The Agony and The Ecstasy. At least I got the sense that the author’s massive research was leaving me with a real biography of Freud. I had to wonder why the author just didn’t write a straight biography, then thought that he probably was so used to thinking of himself as a writer of fictionalized biographies that his novelistic method was the only way to go about it. But though as a novel this work is a flop, my interest in the subject kept me going, aided by taking several months to read the book as I occasionally switched off to more interesting titles. The dialog in this novel is not credible, with Freud speaking what suspiciously appears to be lengthy extracts from his published works, and most characters apparently trying to sum up the essence of their psychoanalytic theories in long-winded, paragraphic declamations. Overwhelming details ranging from the contents of Freud’s apartment to minutiae about what happened on various vacations is apparently intended to fully call forth the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries in Vienna, but there is just so much of it that you suspect the author simply failed to succinctly nail down the theater stage where his characters would walk.

A sense of drama finally emerges in the last hundred pages out of 823, as Jung splits away from Freud, rival psychoanalytic factions take root, World War I devastates the family finances, and mouth cancer introduces Freud to physical suffering and personal mortality. The last section on his refusal to leave Vienna in 1938 even amid Nazi occupation, changing his mind only when his own daughter is arrested, then fleeing to England, is quite interesting, but we don’t get any further information after Freud arrives in England. Is the author trying to leave an impression of escape from evil and arrival in a new land, and some sense of immortality? But the last year of his life, including his assisted death by morphine in September 1939, would seem to be worthy of inclusion, as it’s part of his character.

Facing prosecution for draft resistance, I dropped out of college for a year. During this time I had a number of uninteresting jobs, but found plenty of time outside of work to study, renew old friendships and get involved in community politics.

The biggest political accomplishment of the year was the creation of what we called the Park Ridge Community and Youth Coalitions which led, ultimately, to some legislation creating both youth and senior citizen centers in the city. More important, however, was the process and the involvement of thousands in our activities and hundreds in the creation of them.

Of all the persons who got involved, the most impressive was Kara, a high school senior at my old school. She was articulate, aggressive, well-read and had one of the most interesting families I've ever become close to. Fortuitously, her dad owned a print shop and pressed our community newspaper, News & Views, without charge. Kara also had the longest, thickest blonde hair I'd ever seen. Being a sucker for the hair thing, respect soon turned to desire. The age difference, however, led to restraint and restraint, naturally, increased the passion. It was great, like knowing and working with Elizabeth Gurley Flynn.

It was, I believe, on my twenty-first birthday, soon after the death of my childhood dog, Jimmy Olsen, that Kara presented me with Passions of the Mind, in hardcover, as a gift while we were standing in Hodges Park near the railway crossing in downtown Park Ridge. I was touched. Receiving any recognition from a friend, not a relative, on one's birthday was pretty much a new experience. The book itself wasn't one of Stone's best, but the thought behind it was good. I'd been studying continental depth psychology pretty seriously for months.

Kara, now a novelist and film director, was my first serious girlfriend. Unfortunately, she now splits her time between L.A. and Paris, so it's been years since we've seen one another. The memories, however, remain quite fond and precious.

تا قبل از این هروقت اسم زیگموند فروید می اومد یه آدم عصبی که زیادی تو مسایل جنسی ریز شده و میخواد به زور روح رفیع آدمی! رو در قالب ضعیف و آبکیه انگیزه ها و عقده های جنسی جا بده به ذهنم میرسید. با خوندن این کتاب فهمیدم تا حدی حق با من بوده اما کفه ترازو به نفع فروید سنگینتر شد. فروید طبعی به مراتب حساستر از اونچه فکر میکردم داشته و به عنوان یه پزشک که تونسته پی ببره همه بیماریها صرفا نتیجه عوارض جسمی نیستن و روان آدمی میتونه حتی بیشتر تاثیر داشته باشه، موفق عمل کرده. زندگی خانوادگی و روابطش با پدر و مادرش خوب بوده بطوری که مطرح کردن تئوریهایی مثل عقده ادیپ نمیتونه نتیجه مشکلات روانی خودش بوده باشه منتها چون جامعه آن روزهای اروپا تحمل شنیدن اینگونه مطالب رو نداشته اون جنجالها برپا شده و مطرود جامعه پزشکی دوران خودش شده. بهرحال به هیچ عنوان نمیتوان نقش اصلی فروید رو در آنچه که سالها بعد نه تنها در پزشکی اعصاب و روان بلکه در زندگی شخصی تک تک ما آدمها به وقوع پیوسته ندیده گرفت

روزی که شروع به خواندن این رمان نهصد صفحه ای کردم فکر نمیکردم با چنین داستان جذاب و شیرینی روبرو شوم. شور ذهن داستانیست که لحظات زندگی زیگموند فروید را از آغاز جوانی و روییدن جوانه های عشق بر قلب او تا لحظه تبعید وی از وین به انگلستان را به زیبایی تمام به تصویر کشیده است. البته محتوای کتاب، صرفا داستان زندگی نیست بلکه بیان تلاشها و تحقیقات مداوم فروید و تلاش بی وقفه او برای کسب علم علیرغم ناملایمات فراوان در زندگی، چگونگی نهادینه شدن علم روانکاوری، داستانهای روان درمانی فروید که بنظرم بسیار جذاب هستند، و بخصوص آشنایی با نام بسیاری از بزرگان علم روانکاوری و ارتباط آنها با فروید از جمله کارل یونگ است. خواندن این کتاب را به تمام علاقمندان به روانکاوی و داستانهای روانکاوی پیشنهاد می کنم.

زیگموند دریافت که از ضمیر ناآگاه مفهوم بسیار محدودی بدست داده و در قضاوت اخلاقی نسبت به آن دچار اشتباه شده.او در این رهگذر به اشتباه خود پی برد : دیگر بخشهای ضمیر ناآگاه را ندیده گرفته بود . شاید نیمی از آن را که شامل غریزه های زندگی بخش و حافظ حیات و آفرینندگی بود همان بخش که خاستگاه روشنگرترین و بزرگترین هنرها بود. نوشت:
نویسندگان خلاق یاوران با ارزشی هستند که باید مورد سپاس بی کران قرار گیرند. زیرا مستعد دانستن همه چیزها از خاک تا افلاکند و فلسفه ما هنوز نگذاشته خوابش را هم ببینم. معرفت آنان به ذهن خیلی بیشتر از مردم عادی است.به منابعی دست می یبابند که ما هنوز در آن را به روی دانش نگشوده ایم...

Nu mă așteptam deloc, la cinci ani după ce am citit primul volum a lui Irving Stone- Viața lui Freud, Turnul nebunilor, am găsit în sfârșit și volumul II care pe vremea aia nu era în stoc, mi-a luat mult timp să mă întorc la o asemenea operă nemaipomenită...Volumul II din Viața lui Freud pur și simplu te acaparează total în mania subconștientului, te stigmatizează, întâlnim un Freud nebun, bolnav și obsedat de moartea tatălui sau, fără studenți în aula universitară, fără pacienți în cabinetul său, Freud este pur și simplu marginalizat, derutat și împins la declin de toti cei care l-au apreciat ani de zile, de ce? Pentru că marele mestru al psihanalizei universale îndrăznește să publice prelegerea sa despre sexualitate infantilă, pe baza mărturisilor pacineților săi care se întorceau rând pe rând în copilărie, denigrând straturile pure ale memoriei...O incursiune fascinantă în viscerele demonului uman cel mai de temut și anume ''subconștientul''- parte cercetată cu de-amănuntul de părintele psihanalizei Sigmud Freud, o istorie adaptată ficțional și migălos pe baza cercetărilor îndelungate ale vieții lui Freud de Irving Stone - autor al altor opere literare de anvergură care aduc în prim plan viețile marilor personalități precum: Van Gogh,Michelangelo Buonarroti și anume: Bucuria vieții sau Agonie și extaz...Memorabil scriitor cât și opera sa!

وقتی کتاب رو شروع کردم، خیلی ذوق و شوق داشتم که قراره وارد زندگی و دنیای فروید بشم، اما باید بگم که کاملا خورد تو ذوقم!
کتاب حجم زیادی داره، حجمی که خیلی راحت می‌شد اونو تو صفحات کمتری گنجوند. تا صفحه ۴۰۰،۵۰۰ کتاب خوب پیش رفت، بد نبود، اما از اون‌جا به بعد، همه‌اش منتظر بودم که خب، پس چه اتفاقی قراره بیوفته؟؟ چرا تموم نمی‌شه پس؟!
نویسنده خیلی به اتفاقات خاص که برای کتب داستانی هستند نپرداخته بود و کتاب در قالب زندگی‌نامه پیش‌رفته بود. پر بود از اسم نویسنده‌ها و روانشناسانی که فروید باهاشون در ارتباط بوده ولی هیچ تاثیری در روند زندگی و کاریش، نداشتند. البته که من از دید یه آدم معمولی این کتاب رو می‌بینم و صددرصد برای کسایی که تو حوزه‌ی رواشناسی و روانکاوی فعالیت دارند، کتاب طور دیگه‌ای نمود پیدا می‌کنه.
اگه بخوام از خود نظریات فروید بگم، از دید من فروید زیادی روی نظریه‌هاش پافشاری می‌کرد و وقتی کسی از اون و باورهاش دور می‌شد و دست رد به سینه‌اش می‌زد فقط به این فکر می‌کرد که اون آدم راه اشتباه رفته، نه خودش!
اون معتقد بود که هر اتفاق روان‌نژندانه‌ای رو می‌شه ربط داد به آسیب‌های جنسی و از دلِ از چیزی، یه آسیب جنسی می‌کشید بیرون. چیزی که با پیشرفت علمی، در عصر حاضر مورد قبول نیست. البته که فروید پنجره تازه‌ای تو این عرصه به روی همه باز کرد و گام‌های مهمی برداشت و دست‌آوردهایی داره که واقعا فوق‌العاده‌ان و خودم به شخصه قبول دارم، اما از نظر من، آدم‌ها، محقق‌ها و پژوهشگرها، باید نظرات مخالف‌ خودشونو هم تو یه بخشی از موضوعاتشون، بگنجونند.
البته که من تمام این مطالب رو صرفا از روی این کتاب و نوشته‌هاش نوشتم و شاید تو کتاب‌های دیگه، وجه دیگه‌ای از فروید رو نشون بدن😊

نزدیک به 300 صفحه ش رو خوندم دیگه نتونستم 700ص دیگه رو با همین شکل جلو برم، پر از توصیفات اضافی،جزئیات غیرضروری و بشدت خسته کننده

Bylo to hooodně dlouhé. Na mnoho dní. Ale taky hodně zajímavé.
I když se mi tento životopis líbil míň než Michelangelův nebo Goghův, jako kniha je stejně fascinující. Těžko je možné srovnávat jednotlivé životopisy mezi sebou.
Jenom mi prostě není tak blízká samotná psychoanalýza, navíc s tou známou freudovskou až posedlostí sexuálními symboly.
Irving zde ale popisuje Freuda rozhodně jako obdivuhodného člověka.

За написването на това произведение са използвани изключително много източници, поради което самата книга е и изключително подробна. Да, браво, само че... Дразнещо, ненужно, прекалено подробна книга на твърде много места, ако питате мен. Твърде голямо внимание на детайлите до най-дребната подробност, което невинаги е интересно за проследяване. Всеки ден, час по час, минута по минута проследяваме живота на главния герой. Аз лично предпочитам при биографиите да се посочват само по-сериозните факти, а дали героят си е измил зъбите конкретно в някой си ден, нека да е неговата малка тайна.
Разглежданите от Фройд случаи, докато сам открива и доизкусурява новата си наука, са може би най-ценното в цялата работа. Те бяха най-интересните моменти и често случваше да пропускам няколко абзаца, за да стигна до този тип примери за развитието на психоанализата. Извън тях подробностите просто утежняваха, точка.
По принцип съм доволна от произведенията на Стоун, но тук просто не са му стигнали силите или просто темата е твърде сложна, за да я превърне в едно от произведенията си в стил "Аз се превръщам във великия учен и сега лично ще ви разкажа кое как беше". Самият език на книгата е дървен, голям препъни камък. Дори в стандартните класически произведения, писани по-сухичко, не могат да си говорят чак толкова дървено. Това убиваше много от удоволствието в допълнение с подробностите.
Оценявам усилието, но все пак е трябвало някой да извади големите ножици за разни пасажи.
(От българска страна също е трябвало малко по-сериозна намеса за техническата част. Имаше тенденциозно развитие в допусканите технически грешки, засилващо се колкото повече се приближавахме към края... Нали аз все обещавам да не мрънкам за това, но сега разбирам - това е част от моята невроза xD).

Life of Sigmund Freud in novelist style, his interesting work as neurology as new and fascinating subject in his times (19th century breakthrough in medicine doctrine) Then, his work with, Jean-Martin Charcot "the founder of modern neurology". Besides, his traveling to live in France seemed to give him experience blended with his study and practice at hospital. Further, at the time when he started his private practice he found out benefits of hypnosis, however then he started psychoanalysis on himself to heal and learn roots to the mind. Just to work on his passion together with friends like Carl Jung. Even then he visited New York. Also there are parts of his family life in this biographical novel. And finally at the autumn of his live first ward war appears only to make problems but he moved to Tatra Mountains, but just before Second World War he had to emigrate to US.

Now, from my, historical point of view that book is like a mirror to the past (like most of the books). However I disliked Freud’s idea of going into patients mind and changing it (yes, he wanted only to cure his subjects but still unsafe idea).

Very interesting book about the professional development of Freud. The book begins during Freud's time at medical school, and journeys through his life as medical doctor and later founder of psychoanalysis, with personal information provided along the way. I enjoyed this book because it really showed the development of his ideas; while many of Freuds ideas are indeed lofty, weird, and since been declared as oversimplified or "applying one theory to all problems," many other ideas are indeed still relevant today and have served as a basis for a great deal of psychological studies, therapies, and research that is still applied and accurate today. After reading this book, I appreicate Freud much more. While the book is interesting and has a great deal of fascinating information regarding psychology and psychoanlysis, I will say it is a very long book and can indeed get tiring at times, which is why I cannot give it 5 stars.

I first fell victim to the web of Stone's literary genius about 10 years while reading The Agony and Ecstacy, his account of Michelangelo. Passions of the Mind and the intimate portrayal of Freud's struggle as he struggles for others, wrenches me away from myself. Irving Stone's capacity to understand the character who he is writing about in a compassionate manner, allows the reader to understand their joys and struggles. Although Freud's psychological methods are antiquated and deemed more harmful than helpful by the modern mental health community; all of those with mental illness owe him a great depth of gratitude. He undermined his own financial and personal comforts to help those who could not help themselves. Unafraid of what his contemporaries thought of him, he constantly strove to find answers to questions and worked hard and consistently. His biography also shows him to be a moral and upstanding family and father figure. I deeply respect Freud.

First rate, a real surprise. Picked it up in lending library of my building laundry room. Old paperback from 1965. I wasn't even interested in Freud. But Irving Stone knows what he's doing and page by page in this 900-page novelistic biography he drew me in.

The book tells the story of a marriage, a career and a family. It proceeds methodically, almost day by day. 400 pages into it and you're wondering when you'll hear more about psychoanalysis. But fear not, you have 400 pages ahead of you. In the end, I'd have been happy with 200 pages more.

Freud himself, in Stone's depiction, is throughout quietly ambitious yet modest, a devoted friend, loving husband/father and gentleman. He's also Jewish and poor, struggling in the first 400 pages to survive and succeed in medicine, a field for aristocratic gentiles in late 19th century Vienna .

This book makes me want to read Stone's novelistic bios of Da Vinci and Van Gogh.

مدت زیادی بود که این کتاب رو در کتاب‌خانه داشتم و طرفش نرفته بودم تا اینکه هوس یک رمان بلند کردم و راستش فکر نمی‌کردم انقدر خواندنش بهم بچسبه. کتاب جالبی بود. نویسنده سعی کرده بود به شیوه معمول زندگی‌نامه‌ها قلم نزنه و واقعن هم موفق بود. بگذریم از این‌که بیش از حد هوای فروید رو داشت وگاهی آدمی رو درخصوص مستند بودن وقایعی که مربوط به تئوری‌های فروید و حتا یونگ است به شک می‌انداخت، اما درکل فضای داستانی، خیلی خوب و روان از کار دراومده بود.
درخصوص ترجمه، من با ترجمه پرتو اشراق خوندم و به موازات نسخه دیگری رو هم با ترجمه دوتن دیگر(اکبر تبریزی و فرخ تمیمی) به نام شور ذهن دانلود کردم. مقایسه‌ی دو ترجمه کمی من رو گیج کرد چون خیلی جاها اطناب و ایجازهایی در متن بود که به دلیل عدم دسترسی به متن اصلی نمی‌شد گفت کدام ترجمه درسته. در کل اما ترجمه خوب بود و اذیت نمی‌کرد

What can be said about this book must be absorbed from its pages. Irving Stone's eloquence is as artful as his research is thorough.

In true Stone fashion the biographical-novel begins in Sigmund Freud's mid-twenties, and chronicles his life in narrative form.

This is not the book for those who are deeply invested in understanding Freud's theories or psychoanalytic concepts, though they are obviously treated with some discrete insight as Freud lived and breathed his work.

Freud was an artist whose canvas was the written word, his inspiration was the mind.

Good but lengthy fictional biography of Sigmund "Sigi" Freud and his life and times, covering primarily 1880-1920s. Good overview of the beginnings of the psychoanalytic philosophy and what was happening in the neurology field in Austria and the world during that time.

Paul: I didn't, but I do now. I am reading them straight through and with great care.
He would have flushed with pleasure.

In this book, Irving Stone narrates to us the life of Sigmund Freud, the father of psychoanalysis. Through psychoanalysis, Freud was able to explain what goes on in people's mind, including their unconscious. By bringing forward to consciousness, the origins of various mental disabilities, Freud was able to offer his patients relief. The category of patients included homosexuals, masturbaters, neurotics, those who are suicidal and generally the insane.

"I did household work for a high civil servant for eight years. I was dismissed with an excellent certificate. But this certificate destroyed me. When I go for a job everybody thinks I am not suitable for a modest job. I haven't had work for two and a half years. Three months ago I tried to commit suicide by drinking vitriol but he hospital cured me. I am afraid of going back to the world because their are many people but no human beings. in the streets people look at me strangely. When I show people my certificate they tell me there was a punishable relationship between me and my employer. That's why I want to die. Doctor, if I stay here, will you help me get some poison?"

I love biographies and knew very little about Freud. I have to admire his hard work, insights and courage. He was a good person who was a pioneer
