The Power of Self-Discipline — Som Bathla (9 titled chapters + Closing Thoughts) Feb. 16-March 17, 2021
This is my second non-fiction book in as many months. I have tried not to make a habit of this fact, but when a good non-fiction book relative to my present situation comes along, I gotta take it.
This one came along at the right time, but I didn’t finish it until after the fire had been put out (so to speak.)
I had a big project that I had been working on for over a year, and didn’t get the functions I really needed until 3 weeks before it was due. I kid you not. But in that meantime, I felt distracted, depressed and angry that I was meeting road block after roadblock. I learned later that many of the function of the software I was trying to learn were locked down and out of access to me. (This project was Islandora.)
When this book came along, I was beginning to feel like the issues I was having were all me.
This book put a lot of things in to perspective and even gave strength to some of the techniques I have been utilizing since after the project began.
I learned some great tips in this book. I do think this book was transferred or written by an English as a second language author. But don’t let that dissuade you. This book is an absolute keeper!
It may have taken me awhile to read, but the examples Mr. Bathla gave were so real world (one involved an awareness that was brought to light by his own child,) that I felt connected to his ideas in a way that I very rarely feel when reading these types of book.
I’m going to refer back to his tips.
Living moment to moment is the gist of it, but even if you think you know the ending, it’s everything sprinkled in between that makes this book a delight. Well worth the slow read.
Had a lot of basic info but some good data on finding ways to use willpower in a strategic fashion. Felt it lacked appropriate guidance for people who may be struggling with mental health conditions like depression or ADHD as it would have been nice to see if there were studies on persons with these conditions who successfully utilized the treatment options outlined in the book
Very basic concepts. If you have read self help books in the past this will touch upon already learned concepts. Also, I listened to this as an audiobook and the narrator sounded like he was going to sneeze often and it was distracting.
Nothing new. Lots of pieces of other books tossed out at random. The wording and/or the reading on the audio book were not good. It almost seemed like a poor translation of something originally written in a different language.
