Like a wisp of smoke, political intrigue entwines around ACCA vice-chairman Jean Otus and those both near to him and far. What secrets from the past connect Nino to the royal family? Why is Lotta's life threatened by a shadowy assassin? And who is the true mastermind behind the coup that threatens unrest upon the people of Dowa? Thoroughly embroiled in all the drama, Jean alone holds the key to the future of ACCA...
Natsume Ono (Japanese name: オノ・ナツメ) made her professional debut in 2003 with the webcomic La Quinta Camera. Her subsequent works not simple, Ristorante Paradiso, and Gente (a continuation of Ristorante Paradiso) met with both critical and popular acclaim. In 2009 Ristorante Paradiso was adapted into a TV anime series. Her current series House of Five Leaves (Saraiya Goyou), also adapted into a TV anime series in 2010, is running in IKKI magazine.
I've watched the anime. I know how the story goes. And yet, the reveal still left me speechless. It recontextualizes the whole story and elevates it from good to great. Nino is such a tragic figure. He should feel resentful towards Jean yet is nothing but loyal to him. I'm completely obsessed with him. On top of that, there's also an assassination attempt! That chase sequence is suspenseful and masterfully done. And just before the grand finale, we find out who the real masterminds behind the coup are. This is a fantastic volume from start to finish. Natsume Ono is a master of her craft.
I felt like Nino kinda got the short shift. That said, the reveal was great! The story really came together cohesively for the first time, without compromising on the slow, deliberate way the reader is drawn into the world.
Ah-hah, here things really begin to unfold, and some of the questions about just what Jean knows or wants are made more clear. It occured to me writing this just now how part of the pleasure of the series is that almost all the characters are basically decent people, even if they have incompatible goals.
