An Amish midwife and an Englisch doctor must embrace their differences to rescue a baby in need in this uplifting romance that will "capture your heart and leave you smiling" (Amy Lillard).
Kyle Miller never planned on becoming a country doctor. But when he's offered a medical practice in his sleepy hometown, Kyle knows he must return... and face the painful past he left behind. Except the Amish community isn't quite ready for Kyle. Especially the pretty midwife who refuses to compromise her traditions with his modern medicine...
The more Leah Stoltzfus works with the handsome Englisch doctor, the more she finds herself caught between the expectations of her family and her own hopes for the future. It will take one surprising revelation and one helpless baby in need of love to show Leah and Kyle that their bond may be greater than their differences... if Leah can find the courage to follow her heart. "The Amish Teacher's Gift might have been the first book I've read by Rachel J. Good, but it won't be my last." - Shelley Shepard Gray, New York Times bestselling author
The Love & Promises series: The Amish Teacher's Gift The Amish Midwife's Secret The Amish Widow's Rescue
Rachel J. Good's The Amish Midwife's Secret is a story that achieves the perfect blend of family, faith, and forgiveness. Without ever losing sight of both the building of a wholesome yet believable romance. And an emotionally charged storyline.
Said storyline in this case involving Dr. Kyle Miller. A man whose past it seems is about to catch up with him in a most unexpected way. When a phone call from the doctor of his Amish country hometown of Lancaster, Pennsylvania calls to offer him the gift of a lifetime. The sole ownership of the elder physician's practice. An offer that should and would be any young doctor's dream. Unless of course, going back home to pursue said dream would mean that one has to also go back to the people and places that comprise the stuff of one's greatest nightmare. As it does for Kyle.
Adding to the complications of facing the demons of one's past; while attempting to assure the security of one's future. As per Kyle. His rather eventful introduction to the strong willed and beautiful Leah Stoltzfus. A young woman torn between remaining loyal to a religion and a way of life that just may cost her dreams of the profession that she loves. For midwifery certification requires a level of education that her strict Amish faith forbids. Leah also appears to have more than a few secrets of her own. Some of which concern Kyle. And if revealed, could help him heal from the one horrific tragedy for which he now blames himself. Secrets that, as she and the good doctor become closer, as workmates, friends, and possibly more. Become harder to keep secret. But at what cost? And is she the only one in Kyle's life who may have secrets to share, powerful enough to rewrite the chapters of his broken past?
This exquisitely penned tale is an utter joy to read. Combining suspense, mystery, drama, clean romance, and a faith based plot. Because its authoress takes time to craft each and every aspect of her story. Everything about said story is perfect. Leaving readers free to fully enjoy and explore the world we see before us. Character interaction and plot complexity play key roles in this process. While the simplicity and forthright nature of the Amish is also allowed to shine. This book is recommended for those readers looking for a faith based romance. Those already acquainted with such reads. And those looking for a well rounded story tailor made to warm the heart.
Reviewer's Note: The Amish Midwife's Secret is the second book in the Love and Promises series. It may be read as a standalone. Or as part of its intended series.
This is the second book in this series that I have read and enjoyed, and am hoping for more! This is a story of love and compassion and a little bit of sweet romance, but mainly a story of forgiveness, and the hardest of all forgiving yourself. The author did a wonderful job with the characters and presenting the story, even with the elderly woman who worried about their reputation, and past indiscretions of people in her care. There are a few bombs that are dropped and surprise secrets unfold, and they sure kept me page-turning. I loved how this book worked out!
I received this book through Celebrate Lit, and was not required to give a positive review.
Sweet story filled with forgiveness, love, faith and more. Learning to trust self and others can be troublesome, when expectations are given by family and community. However, in this heartwarming story, there is the possibility of forever love. I received a copy of this book from the author. This is my personal honest opinion. No review was required.
An Amish midwife and a traditional “young” Doctor clash in this story. They both have pasts that keep them a little at odds. When the young Dr. is given an opportunity to take over the retiring towns Dr. office it becomes a process of who will give more to get him to commit to taking over with her staying as the office helper with the Amish. Secrets, opinions and a little romance made this an interesting read.. I was gifted a copy, no review was required. My review is voluntary..
My feelings going into this book were a mixed bag. On the one hand, I loved that it had a medical aspect and that it featured many Amish characters, but I wasn’t so sure about some of its other aspects. It’s a contemporary romance, and I prefer historical settings and, although a romantic at heart, I’ve never been a fan of the romance genre. However, so much of Christian fiction is romance-oriented that I’ve come to accept that it’s most likely going to be part of the story. What sets some Christian fiction authors apart for me as a reader is the ability to craft a narrative in which the romance is not overdone. The romance is definitely there, but it’s not overdramatized and it coalesces well with the other primary storylines. To my delight, this was the case with “The Amish Midwife’s Secret”. Even though it was clearly evident from the beginning that Leah and Kyle were attracted to one another, knowing this early on did not detract from the story.
Something that really stood out in this novel was Good’s ability to weave together the Amish, Mennonite, and Englisch cultures and customs. The characters were all dynamic, facing challenges to their beliefs and traditions, and this conflict added emotional depth to the story. Both Leah and Kyle had to come to terms with defining moments in their past and learn how to move forward in faith. They each had dreams that pulled their hearts in different directions, and it was interesting to watch this play out. One of the main lessons, in my opinion, was about compromise. Sometimes the answer isn’t always black and white but rather a mixture of the two. Balancing complementary medicine such as herbal remedies with prescription medication and more invasive procedures is one example of this. Seeing how the Englisch and Amish can coexist and learn from one another made this book stand out, and the strong faith element was a good reminder that God is always working things out and making a way for us. What a blessing it is when we, like Leah and Kyle, realize how things are coming together and falling into place!
I received a complimentary copy of this book through CelebrateLit and was not required to post a favorable review. All opinions are my own.
I always enjoy reading stories by Rachel J. Good. First of all, she provides story lines that are different than the norm. Readers in the amish fiction world have been seeing so much repetition lately, that reading one of Good's stories is refreshing. Second, she provides characters that are flawed. When you read one of Good's stories, you are not going to read about "perfect" amish people that live in their "perfect" amish world. No, these characters have issues, trials, tribulations, and even fear. Third, Good always provides a sweet faith element that is subtle yet bold. I found all of these and more in the pages of The Amish Midwife's Secret.
I'm not sure what I liked about this story more, Kyle or Leah. They both had things from their past that they wanted to stay in the past. But doesn't God have a funny way of bringing those to light in a way that forces us to deal with the issue and start the healing process? Through ups and downs these characters really grew in this story, and quite frankly I think Good wrote it perfectly. It wasn't an automatic healing. Remember when I said the characters were flawed? It takes them time to sort of things, and sometimes they don't react well to circumstances. Guess what? That basically mirrors every single one of us unperfect people! I just really enjoyed the way Good wrote the characters this way.
The other part of the book that was interesting to me was the medicinal aspect. I actually learned a lot - yes you can do with with fiction books! I don't know too much about herbal medicines and such, so it was not only interesting to read, but it made me want to look into it even more. Good has a way of doing that - making you more interested in something you never thought twice about before. In a world that is starting to rely on more of these kinds of treatments, and the big push on essential oils and stuff, I found this fascinating and think other readers will as well.
Would I recommend this book to you? Oh yes, I most surely would. But I would recommend reading the first book in the series before you do. This could probably be read as a stand alone, but I think that reading the first book made this one even more enjoyable! I received a complimentary copy of this book. I was not required to write a favorable review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Rachel Good's stories are warm and multi-dimensional and The Amish Midwife’s Secret is a prime example. The plot isn’t a typical one for Amish fiction (much like the first book in this series, as well), and I was fascinated with the unique insights I gleaned from the well-researched details and the events that unfolded. From midwifery to homeopathic remedies to other interesting tidbits that I won’t go into here lest I spoil anything for you, I was intrigued to see how it would all play out (the dwindling time left in my Kindle copy worried me for a bit there!) and what would happen next.
Leah and Kyle fight a strong mutual attraction in spite of their different backgrounds and beliefs, differences which make it seemingly impossible for them to be together. The important thing to their story, though, wasn’t the sparks that sizzled whenever they were in close proximity, but what God was doing in each of their hearts individually.
Bottom Line: Wonderfully written, emotional and sweet story about forgiving one’s self and adjusting to the unexpected twists of life. Layered characters who feel like old friends and intriguing details that bring a fresh take to the Amish fiction genre. Rachel J. Good’s Love and Promises series is a compelling peek into how Amish and non-Amish coexist in close-knit communities, and I’m very much looking forward to book #3!
(I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book)
The Amish Midwife's Secret by Rachel J Good is the most delightful Amish romance that will leave you smiling. The novel is dominated by medicine - the small town family doctor and the Amish midwives, one a trainee. Traditional herbal remedies exist side by side with modern medicine and hospitals. Often for the Amish, gut instinct is the order of the day. The novel deals with guilt and forgiveness. He wanted to "atone for his guilt. But nothing he did could ever erase his past." We all make mistakes, it is not our role to drown in guilt. Jesus paid for all our sins on the cross so we do not ever need to atone for anything. We must forgive ourselves. Guilt is a heavy burden to carry and not one we are meant to pick up. If forgiveness is given by God, and it is, we would be guilty of hubris if we do not forgive ourselves. Relationships with God suffer because we feel bad about our actions. "God had ignored his pleas... so it seemed foolhardy to trust Him." In our hurt, we place human characteristics on God. He is not human. He is God and as such should not be judged to have human traits of ignoring people. God will always answer us and He can always be trusted. The Amish have a strong faith. "Everyone discussed God as if He were an important part of their lives." God longs to be a part of all of our lives. He longs to have a relationship with each and every one of us. The Amish are very community minded and also have a strong moral code. Adoption is a major theme. Adopting parents choose to show no differentiation between their blood children and their chosen children. Likewise God chooses to adopt us all equally into His family. Names are important. A name change signifies a change in circumstances, reminding us that God chooses to give us new names such as beloved. Secrets have the power to enhance or destroy but whatever the outcome, secrets must come into the light or the burden of them will eat away at us. The Amish Midwife's Secret was another wonderful read from Rachel J Good who always writes cracking stories grounded in God. I received this book for free. A favourable review was not required and all views expressed are my own.
The Amish Midwife's Secret by Rachel J. Good is an incredibly heartwarming novel of forgiveness, new beginnings and love. This second installment in the Love and Promises series can be read as a standalone but I also recommend the previous book, The Amish Teacher's Gift, as well.
Dr. Kyle Miller is surprised by an out of the blue phone call from a doctor who lives in his hometown of Lancaster, PA. He is also shocked by Dr. Hess's proposal for Kyle to move back to Lancaster and take over his practice so he can retire. Since Kyle has worked very hard to forget about his past, he has no intention of accepting Dr. Hess's generous offer. However, as he is trying to work up the courage to turn the doctor down, Kyle instead finds himself agreeing to spend a few days working with Dr. Hess in his practice. Will Kyle change his mind once he goes back to the place that still haunts him? Or will the trip convince him he is right to say no to Dr. Hess?
Leah Stoltzfus is in training to become a midwife despite the fact that she won't be able to get her certification. She is also rather overwhelmed by her other responsibilities which include working fulltime in the family's holistic store and caring for her Mamm. Leah is involved in a courtship with an Amish young man whose expectations about married life are a source on contention.
Leah is a caring and compassionate young woman who always puts other people's needs ahead of her own. She is also an obedient young women so it comes as shock when she finds herself at cross purposes with Kyle during their initial meeting. As a member of the medical community, Kyle is upset by some of the decisions she makes for her patients.
Despite their differences and much to their dismay, Kyle and Leah share a mutual attraction for one another. Leah is appalled at her interest in another man since her courtship with Ben means they are expected to marry. Kyle carries plenty of guilt and heartache from his teenage romance with an Amish young woman. Not only has he avoided any type of romantic entanglement since, he absolutely refuses to even contemplate becoming involved with another Amish woman. As Leah and Kyle spend time together at Dr. Hess's medical practice, will they be able to continue to ignore their deepening feelings?
The Amish Midwife's Secret is a heartfelt journey of self-forgiveness, faith and love. Kyle is a wonderful man whose inability to move on from a heartrending incident in his past continues to guide his life choices in the present. Leah treasures her faith but some of her dreams are at odds with the tenets of her religion. The romance between Kyle and Leah is endearing but can they overcome the seemingly insurmountable differences between them?
Rachel J. Good's newest addition to the her delightful Love and Promises series is heartwarming, thought-provoking and ultimately, uplifting. I thoroughly enjoyed and highly recommend this charming Amish romance to fans of the genre.
Magnificent--top notched Amish genre story found in The Amish Midwife’s Secret, book two in A Love and Promises series by beloved Rachel J. Good. This story is filled with characters that are flawed in the Amish community and English world where they need to overcome the past to find forgiveness. Good created an intriguing, heartwarming story that is realistic, picturesque and authentic in her Amish research.
Kyle Miller returned to the Amish community to visit Dr. Hess and the offer he made for his practice. Kyle had other dreams for his medical career, but when some hidden truths are revealed and unpredicted happenings transpire maybe he will discover his way back to God. Leah Stoltzfus dream as a midwife and a family came to a halt in a heartbreaking way. However, another delivery for Kyle and her in a middle of a storm may just bring some joy and blessing. This story is filled with family, faith, forgiveness in multiple ways and so much more. I do not want to give anything away, but this book is a MUST be read one for fans of Amish genre. I look forward to reading The Amish Widow’s Rescue when it’s released in 2019 as the next book in the Love and Promises series.
Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for a complimentary copy of this book. All thoughts expressed are my sincere ones.
Rachel J Good masters the Amish genre. In her latest Love and Promises book, we see a doctor learn that not only is the midwife an asset professionally but she is also someone he needs in his life. Leah is strong and dependable, she has known Kyle for years and has a secret she hopes he won't recall. Kyle has left the Amish area and didn't want to go back but an offer of a free practice is hard to pass up. I really loved the dynamic of English medicine and Amish herbal remedies. It adds a great contrast between the characters and also piqued my interest in what do Amish do for healing?
This was a great book and very enjoyable. I thought that the secret was well written and add to the relationship between the characters. I think that this is a wonderful series and a great continuation of it.
This book was a delight! I enjoyed it wholeheartedly and I love the author's writing style. Her books just keep getting better and better!!
Some secrets aren't worth keeping because in my opinion they'll just fester and fester until they eat you alive!! Leah soon finds this out!! I can relate to Leah this way. Sometimes I feel like I could just burst open so I can get them off my chest!
Blame and guilt are another thing that I can testify to. And really the only person that you can take all this to is God. God will never tell. He can ease those burdens but you know what? I'm like Leah and Kyle that way. We sometimes feel are not good enough to take it to the Lord in prayer but sometimes you just have to!!
I can relate to Kyle personally!! Wow!! and Wow!! My mouth fell open and my heart stopped beating for just a couple or maybe 5 minutes I was shock!! I felt that the author was talking directly to me in this touchy subjuct. Oh my it sure made the hairs stand up on the back of my neck that's for sure and certain
I'm wondering when doctors stopped making house calls? I know certain veterinarians still do it. I do have family members still living during that time. Now, that is what I call great bedside manners!! Not many doctors today have them especially when they first get out of their medical practices. Those are the ones that I'm not sure why they're even in the medical field.
All said, this is still a wonderful story that kept me turning the pages to see what would happen so I finished late into the night. I was very tired at work the next day but so worth the reading!!
I strongly recommend this book for people who just want a mystery, romance and just daily life all wrapped up into one!! I received a complimentary copy from Netgalley. No compensations were received
The Amish Midwife’s Secret ( Love and Promises #2 ) By: Rachel J. Good The Amish Midwife’s Secret is book two by Rachel J. Good in Love and Promises Series. This is part of a series , but you can read it as a stand a lone without any problems. Wow, this is the second book that I have read by Ms. Good and I am very impressed with her writing. I was hooked right from the start and did not want to put it down. I Love the characters both Leah and Kyle. Leah is a midwife and loves what she does. Dr. Kyle comes back to his home town after getting an offer that is strange. Both Leah and Kyle have some secrets from the past. Can these two work together with their beliefs so different? There is attraction , but one is Amish and the other is English. I really loved this good clean romance with some mystery added. I am looking forward to reading book three “ The Amish Widow’s Rescue”. I was given a complimentary copy of this book through NetGalley and the Publisher, But was not told that I had to give a positive review. All opinions are my own.
The Amish Midwife’s Secret by Rachel Good takes us to Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. Dr. Kyle Miller is surprised when he receives a call from Dr. Martin Hess who is the local physician in his hometown. Dr. Hess is ready to retire, and he is offering his practice to Kyle. After what happened, Kyle is not sure he can face returning home. Leah Stolzfus is a midwife in training plus she is knowledgeable about herbal remedies from working in her families’ herbal shop. Kyle agrees to shadow Dr. Hess for three days, but he did not expect to butt heads to pretty Leah. Dealing with the past is overwhelming and Kyle is going to turn down Dr. Hess’ offer. But when Dr. Hess has a heart attack and needs someone to cover his practice, Kyle cannot say no. Leah fills in for Esther Hess as nurse/receptionist. She thrives in her new role in the doctor’s office and begins falling for handsome doctor. Leah is not willing to give up her family and faith for love until she falls in love with abandoned baby and Kyle is not willing to become Amish. Can Kyle and Leah compromise for the sake of the child?
The Amish Midwife’s Secret can be read alone if you have not read The Amish Teacher’s Gift. Kyle Miller is reluctant to return home because of an incident that changed his life. We learn what happened with Kyle as the story progresses. It is a sad story that is dealt with delicately. It is a wonderful opportunity for him, though, to obtain a doctor’s established practice plus a home. Leah Stolzfus is Amish, takes care of her sick mother, works in the family herbal supply store, and is training to be a midwife. However, Leah cannot become certified as a midwife because the Amish do not allow it (I do not understand the concept). There is drama in the Stolzfus family courtesy of Leah’s brother who jumped the fence and the father has been unable to forgive him. We see how this has affected the family and how they deal with the situation. Leah also has a secret and is afraid to share it with Kyle. I thought The Amish Midwife’s Secret was well-written and engaging. It has steady pacing which makes the story easy to read and enjoy. I like the characters, the setting and the issues addressed. We see how modern medicine can be balanced with herbal medicines if people are willing to work together for the good of their patients. I appreciated that the characters developed over the course of the story. Christian elements include forgiveness of others as well as yourself (harder to accomplish), prayer, having faith, and God’s will. I thought the Christian aspects were nicely incorporated into the story. Everything flowed together into one lovely story. It was interesting to learn about the different herbs and the symptoms/illnesses they can treat. The pair also visit the Clinic for Special Children that has been established (it is a real place) to research, prevent and treat the inherited diseases by Amish and Mennonite. The Amish Midwife’s Secret combines romance, mystery, drama, and faith into one engaging tale.
Kyle left his hometown behind after a heartbreaking young romance and a devasting accident with no plans to ever return. When the local doctor asks him to take over his medical practice, Kyle feels the need to help. What Kyle did not expect was to fall in love with Leah. Leah is the Amish midwife who believes that holistic healing herbs and faith in God are the best healing medicines. Can Kyle and Leah overcome their differences to let love have a chance?
This book kept me up way past my bedtime more times than I can count. I also found myself ignoring everything that needed to be accomplished after work just so I could dive back into Kyle and Leah's story. You cannot help but believe in love and the power of love when you read this story. I became a little weepy as I read because it was so tender.
I am also more interested in the holistic healing properties of organic herbal teas for chronic illness. I have found a new interest. Leah's story was very convincing in how well they can work.
This is the second book in the Love and Promises series but each book can be read as a stand-alone. It is a beautiful Christian romance with no obscene sexual overtones or scenes, no foul language and not overly religious (meaning scripture verses on every page). I would feel comfortable giving this to a teen girl or my ninety-year-old grandmother to read.
I received a copy of this book from Forever (Grand Central Publishing) through NetGalley. Any and all opinions expressed in the above review are entirely my own.
“Kyle Miller never planned on becoming a country doctor. But when he's offered a medical practice in his sleepy hometown, Kyle knows he must return... and face the painful past he left behind. Except the Amish community isn't quite ready for Kyle. Especially the pretty midwife who refuses to compromise her traditions with his modern medicine.”
An easy, sweet Amish read that will definitely appeal to a wide variety of readers. I thoroughly enjoyed this book! It was a tad formulaic and easy to figure out how it would all end, but it still was worth the read.
This was the first book I have read by Rachel Good but I would most certainly read more from her in the future. Good is very gifted at drawing true to life flawed characters that are easy to connect to and root for throughout the book.
I received a complimentary copy of this book from the publisher and NetGalley. The views given are my own. #TheAmishMidwifesSecret #NetGalley #ForeverGrandCentralPublishing
Kyle Miller, is led back to his Amish community when he is offered to take over a retiring doctors medical practice. Leah, learning to be a midwife, finds herself working together with Kyle, but a secret from their past haunts them both.
The story has intrigue, lots of surprises, and a romance that seems impossible. I loved the main characters and Leah's strong Faith. Kyle's faith on the other hand is a constant struggle for him.
The ending wrapped up everything nicely. I enjoyed reading The Amish Midwife's Secret and would highly recommend it.
I received an copy from Celebrate Lit and voluntarily chose to review it.
Having not read book 1 in this series, I thought that I may get confused with reading this story. But, pleasantly, I was not and I thoroughly enjoyed this novel by a new to me author. Her writing style is captivating and her characters are heartwarming and friendly. Each page brought me something new to the story and before I knew it, I was on the last page.
This is a story of love, hope, longing and following God's plan for your life, no matter whether you were expecting it, or not. Kyle, Leah, Ben and all the characters within are facing everyday challenges and have to rely on God to help them find their ways. These sweet characters become more than just characters, they become a part of your heart and pull you into their circle. I loved that feeling!
This page turning novel is one that you don't want to miss! You'll be transported to Amish Country, feeling like you've put on that solid colored dress, jumped in the buddies and are following these sweet ladies and men around their homes. If you are looking for a novel that will captivate your mind and soul, grab this 4 star read now. You won't want to miss it! I can't wait to grab book 1 and see where it all began.
*I received a complimentary copy of this book from Publisher and was under no obligation to post a review, positive or negative.*
I really, really loved this book! Once I started reading it, I couldn't put it down. I had to know how it ended! The story was well developed and progressed at a great rate. The details added to the storyline and made it so interesting. In this book, Kyle (a budding physician) returns to his hometown and meets Leah, an Amish midwife. At first, I wasn't too fond of Kyle, but quickly grew to like him. Leah was a tough lady who deserved the best in life. There was a little mystery in the book too, which added to story in a beautiful way. You don't want to miss out on reading this book!
I really enjoyed this different story. I loved that they both had obstacles they had to overcome, not just to be in a relationship together but to grow as a person.
My only complaint is the ending felt very unfinished. The author assumed that the reader knew what how the solution would look when in reality I never heard of what was being proposed. I would have loved to read an epilogue about their life together. The end felt abrupt
The Amish Midwife's Secret has an amazing storyline with its characters, but most of all the intriguing twists and turns. I never knew what would happen next, so I did not want to stop reading. If you don't read The Amish Midwife's Secret, you will be missing reading an amazing book. I highly recommend reading Author Rachel J. Good's books. Also, this book is A Love & Promises novel.
I received a copy from the author, but was not required to review it. This review is one hundred percent my opinion.
Secrets kept can be beneficial in order not to harm an individual. But sometimes it comes at a price. This is what happened to Kirk and Leah.
An interesting story that shows how the secrets impacted so many people's lives. When is it ok to let the secrets out?
I enjoyed getting to know Leah. She is hardworking and very dedicated. She loves to help her family and the families she works with. Kirk has been studying for years to be the best doctor he can be. He didn't realize he had so much more to learn when he returned to the community he grew up in.
I received this free from Celebrate Lit to review.

Guest Post from Rachel The Amish and Herbal Remedies
As many of you know, my Amish novels are based on real life. I get ideas from hanging around Amish friends, hearing their stories and observing their lives. I’d never invade their privacy by telling their stories exactly as they happen, but the things I learn trigger plot ideas. I’ve always been fascinated by the way the Amish approach healing. Once thing I’ve learned is that, although they’re usually willing to visit doctors, they don’t always take the medicines that are prescribed. Instead, they often substitute herbal remedies. That, and several visits to one of my favorite Amish natural products stores, gave me an idea for one of the conflicts in The Amish Midwife’s Secret. Leah, an Amish midwife, prefers herbal remedies. Of course, that puts her in direct conflict with Kyle, the new Englisch doctor in town, who only believes in science and traditional medicine. Put the two together and lots of sparks fly. Of course, some of those sparks are also of a romantic nature. Leah is not only a midwife, but her family owns a natural products store. She knows the best herbs for healing. Rather than sending a small boy to the hospital for pneumonia, Leah covers the baby’s chest with a warm mixture of onions and other herbs and spices (some Amish friends prefer raw onion for congestion), and she feds the baby fresh pineapple juice for his cough. As a doctor, Kyle is horrified. He wants to admit the baby to a hospital at once. And he expects the old country doctor he’s replacing to back him up. Instead, Dr. Hess informs Kyle that many of the Amish go to doctors for a diagnosis, but then rely on herbal treatments rather than prescriptions. Kyle, who’s been debating about whether to stay in Amish country or move to a big-city hospital, decides to remain in Lancaster and make it his mission to prevent the Amish midwife from harming newborns and their mothers. He certainly doesn’t expect to have his eyes opened to other ways to handle illnesses. But he has to admit, Leah’s methods do seem to work. When a crisis comes, they soon discover that it takes both of them to save a baby. *** A extra little secret: Those of you who get my newsletter already know this, but Kyle in The Amish Midwife’s Secretappeared in two earlier books. I thoroughly enjoyed The Amish Midwife's Secret. The story grabs you from the very first page and won't let you go until the very end. Ms.Good has a talent for writing stories that pull on your heart strings and this one is no different. The characters are relatable and make you forget you're reading a work of fiction. If you've never read one of Ms.Good's stories or you've never tried Amish fiction I highly recommend The Amish Midwife's Secret. You won't be sorry!

The Amish Midwife’s Secret Love and Promises #2 By Rachel J. Good ISBN 9781538711293 racheljgood.strikingly.com Brought to you by OBS reviewer Jeanie
Synopsis:
An Amish midwife and an Englisch doctor must embrace their differences to rescue a baby in need in this uplifting romance that will “capture your heart and leave you smiling” (Amy Lillard).
Kyle Miller never planned on becoming a country doctor. But when he’s offered a medical practice in his sleepy hometown, Kyle knows he must return… and face the painful past he left behind. Except the Amish community isn’t quite ready for Kyle. Especially the pretty midwife who refuses to compromise her traditions with his modern medicine…
The more Leah Stoltzfus works with the handsome Englisch doctor, the more she finds herself caught between the expectations of her family and her own hopes for the future. It will take one surprising revelation and one helpless baby in need of love to show Leah and Kyle that their bond may be greater than their differences… if Leah can find the courage to follow her heart.
Review:
What a fabulous, gripping novel this is! I have a great appreciation for Amish fiction, and I will definitely read more by this new-to-me author. The characters are well defined with realistic actions and dialog that reflect their faith, teaching me more about the Amish living in their district. Mennonites also have strong roles, and one person, vital to the novel, claims to not believe in God. Excellent, colorful descriptions of each person and the area make this novel sing.
Dr. Kyle Miller has finished his residency and is preparing to find a place to spend the immediate future. His desire is to get a fellowship to research, hoping to find a cure for a disease, partly to do something worthwhile with his years of study and partly to have his name known for a positive reason. Dr. Martin Hess from Lancaster, Pennsylvania, contacts Kyle to come visit for several days. He plans to retire and gradually turn over his practice, even his home, for free, and wants Kyle to return and see the practice as it is today. Originally from the Lancaster area, Kyle has no desire to even return for a visit, much less to live there, but he owes the older doctor and his wife for the help they gave Kyle after his mother died. He also feels he owes the Amish community a great deal.
Leah Stoltzfus is training to be a midwife while running the natural remedies shop that her parents own while her Daed takes a full-time job to help pay down Mamm’s growing medical bills. Leah cares for her mother, who has MS, when her father isn’t home. Her brother, Joel, had taken excellent care of the shop until he decided to not be baptized in the church, then was turned out by her father. Leah is being courted by Ben, who, if they marry, would not allow her to continue to be a midwife. She struggles with this, as she believes being a midwife is her calling. She studies under Sharon, a well-known local midwife. work closely with Dr. Hess if there are any high-risk pregnancies or health challenges they might need his help with. When Leah hears that Dr. Miller may be coming to join, then take responsibility for, Dr. Hess’s practice, she is worried and afraid. She was present the night when the lives of many people changed forever, including Kyle’s, the Amish teen he was dating at the time, and the teen’s family. Leah is afraid of Kyle’s reaction when looking into her eyes and realizing the part she played in the tragic events.
When Kyle meets Leah, he doesn’t seem to recognize her. He does, however, have a problem with her delivering babies in homes rather than with doctors in hospitals. He really has a problem with Leah treating some illnesses with herbs and poultices. It will take time for him to learn that the Amish do not use hospitals except as a last resort, but he doesn’t plan to take that time in Lancaster. Before he could send a “thanks but no thanks” letter to Dr. Hess, Mrs. Hess frantically called him for help. Martin had a heart attack, and they need Kyle to fill in at the clinic for however long it takes. Since he has a month before starting at the new position he accepted, he packs and is on an airplane before he can stop to think about it.
The author shares wonderful, three-dimensional characters with her readers! They are well defined, and many epitomize the Amish (or Mennonite) lifestyle. They are also very human, as noted when sparks were flying between Kyle and Leah. Since in her district, courting someone is a commitment that might continue with marriage, she was unavailable. Since she is Amish and Kyle isn’t, she could never date him. And if Kyle were to become Amish as his brother had, he would have to give up being a doctor. Folks in this novel are very intelligent, caring, and empathetic. I do, however, like Leah the best, for her commitment to others and the follow-through required of her. I also understand why Kyle has turned his back on God, despite the cost to him and those he loved but rooted for him to return to faith.
This drama pulled me in from the beginning and held my attention throughout. There are many closely-held secrets in this gripping novel. I do believe that Kyle has suffered the most, with Leah a close second. Even Dr. Hess and his wife have secrets affecting others’ lives. How the Amish respond to the events surrounding the secrets is nothing less than amazing. This is a delightful story in many ways, especially when seeing Leah’s joy of delivering babies and preparing for her friend’s wedding. There are plot twists and the suspense of knowing who has secrets but waiting for them to be revealed. These are people I would want to read about again – they have flaws, griefs, and secrets – but through it all, the faith and values of the Amish bring healing and ultimately joy to the main characters. I highly recommend this to those who appreciate reading about Amish daily life and medicine, seeing Amish faith in action, even a bit of romance.

I love reading books about the Amish. I always think I know everything about them, then an author will write one and I learn new things like I did in this book. The Amish very seldom go to the hospital unless it is life and death. It was interesting to learn more about midwives and how much they are depended upon. I also was intrigued about the Clinic for Special Children in Strasburg, Pennsylvania.
Leah is a very compassionate woman who loves helping the midwife in the community. She also helps run a store that has natural herbs for sale. It always interests me when a book talks about organic herbs for healing. I wonder if we are missing out on using some of these products today that could be beneficial to patients. That will be a subject that I will have to explore more on my own.
When the doctor in the town decides he is ready to retire he calls on someone who used to live there to take over his practice. Kyle graciously accepts the doctor's offer to come for a few days to look over the practice. There is a deep secret that he has carried for years that may prevent him from staying as the new doctor. As Kyle and Leah work together in the clinic there seems to be little attraction between the two. I was shocked when Leah told Kyle she couldn't continue as a midwife once she is married. Her soon to be husband will not allow her to.
There are a lot of misunderstandings throughout the story that cause friction between characters. I didn't realize how strict the Amish were like unmarried women and men are not allowed to be alone together at all. It would take a lot for me to adjust to their ways. I loved getting to know Kyle and Leah and how easy they seemed to work together. Will Kyle stay and take over the practice ? The story is quite emotional when secrets come out. I cried throughout the book as Kyle wrestled with the past. Leah has her own secret and when the two secrets are finally revealed, it brings a deeper understanding of how people struggle with forgiveness. There are a few surprises in the book that I didn't expect. The author has written a very good story about what happens when secrets are hidden and how much secrets can hurt people. It's a great lesson about forgiveness and compromise as well. I think this is the best book she has written and I won't forget how Kyle and Leah both learn what unconditional love is.
I received a copy of this book from Celebrate Lit. The review is my own opinion.
*4.5 stars Have you ever had life throw you a curve ball? How about five of them? Even young children are aware that life doesn't always go the way we hope or plan. We have to learn to take what life throws us and adjust accordingly. The Amish Midwife's Secret is the story of two young adults learning to maneuver the world when nothing seems to go as planned.
What's difficult about sharing a review for this book, is that much of the content occurs due to the unexpected curve balls thrown Kyle and Leah's way and I don't want to spoil any of the story-line! So what I will say in very broad terms, is that I felt the author managed the thoughts and emotions of the characters in a very real, raw, and heartfelt way. She doesn't shy from their wounds and scars, nor does she hide the healing that doesn't happen overnight. It's as if you are processing the emotions right alongside each of the characters.
One thing I noticed quickly in the story, is that "boundaries" played a major part in this story. In both past and present circumstances, the characters learn the value behind appropriate boundaries and how they are not only important, but for their own protection. Learning to respect boundaries is a sign of maturity but struggling with them is also a sign of being human. Often we are able to learn the most from our mistakes.
Forgiveness is another major theme in the story. What's interesting though is that the forgiveness wrestled with in this story is not in relation to others--but to self. There are times in life where we can forgive others and walk on, but our own personal guilt eats away at us. Both Kyle and Leah learn to realize that in order to move on in their lives and seek joy and contentment, they have to first learn to let go of the pieces of their past that haunt them.
Although this is the second book in a series I read this as a stand-alone. I didn't struggle keeping up in any way, however I enjoyed this one enough I'd be interested in going back and reading the first as well. I recommend this story to fans of Amish Fiction and those interested in how the medical field is viewed and run by different communities of people. This was my first book by Rachel J Good but I'm sure it won't be my last!
*I received a copy of this book from the author through NetGalley and Celebrate Lit Tours. Thoughts and opinions expressed are mine alone.
Having just read The Amish Teacher's Gift, there was no doubt in my mind that this would be an incredible story. I definitely was not disappointed.
Dr. Kyle Miller gets an unusual phone call from his Amish hometown in Pennsylvania. The town’s doctor is offering Kyle his home and entire medical practice as the aging doctor wants to retire. As incredible as this offer is, Kyle has several sincere reasons to decline it. Reluctantly, Kyle agrees to take time out of his demanding schedule to spend a few days working with the other doctor.
There are many problems Kyle is faced with while making this difficult decision. For one thing, he had a tragic past there and can truly never, ever imagine making that place his home again. However, the doctor is pressing him, and Kyle has a lot of trouble simply saying no, although he cannot bring himself to saying yes.
Leah Stoltzfus is an Amish midwife in training. She is more than overwhelmed at the moment. In addition, she is running her family’s store, studying and courting a man named Ben. Leah finds herself in the company of Kyle while dealing with patients during his visit. She is truly perplexed. In part, she has a secret that she is keeping from Kyle. Worse than that, she is quite drawn to him. She is thoroughly confused. He is Englisch, for one thing, and this is against her Amish ways, there is something that she is dreading telling him, and there is the fact that she is courting Ben.
As stated, I read the first book in this series just previously. I am now familiar with the incredible talent that inspirational romance writer Rachel J. Good has. Her stories are multi-layered, sensitive and sweet. Her books are very well researched and her writing style is impeccable. This is a very engaging story and had a wonderful conclusion. Not only do I definitely want to continue with this series, I now want to go back and begin the Sisters and Friends series as well.
Although this book can do well as a standalone, it is the second in a series and is connected to other stories.
Many thanks to Forever for this ARC to review in exchange for my honest opinion.
The Amish Midwife's Secret by Rachel J. Good is the second in her Love and Promises series. This captivating book brings to life the story of a young Amish woman who aspires to be a midwife and is seeing a nice Amish man. And along comes a young Englisch doctor who desires to do research at a prestigious facility but is called back to a place he'd rather forget and had vowed to never return to. Could he live in this community with all the memories? As the story comes to a climax, there are several twists and turns to the plot that are quite surprising. The author keeps interest high as she keeps the reader wondering just what is the midwife's secret and how in the world will these two ever be able to surmount their differences to make a life together. Keeping their feelings hidden from family and friends and even each other proves more and more difficult. The characters are likable and realistic and it is heartwarming to see the growth in their faith and emotions as they begin to forgive, to be forgiven, and allow healing to begin in their lives. Thought-provoking subjects of adoption and the use of natural remedies and transitional medicine are touched on and add considerable interest to the story. Another very intriguing subject she brings out in the story is a Clinic for Special Children where researchers work to prevent and treat inherited diseases that are seen in the Amish and Mennonite communities. It sent me to the internet to look up some of the disorders she mentioned. The Amish Midwife's Secret is an engaging book about secrets that when seen by the light of day, are covered by the grace and forgiveness. I received a complimentary copy of this book via CelebrateLit. A favorable review was not required and opinions are my own. This review is part of a CelebrateLit blog tour.
Kyle struggled with guilt and grief from his past. And he dealt with pride as well. His fresh-out-of-medical-school mentality that medicine was always better than natural remedies and hospitalization is better than treatment at home led to conflict between him and Leah as they were called to the same places to help with delivery and newborn care. Despite this, Kyle was extremely kindhearted and compassionate. His concerns came not only out of thinking he knew better but out of a burden for his patients.
Leah struggled with her deep desire to be a midwife and her beau’s expectation that she would discontinue her practice once they were married. Not to mention the community’s belief that any education beyond 8th grade is prideful.
I appreciated the way the author highlighted the difficulties Kyle and Leah faced without overemphasizing them. There were some unexpected elements introduced and the story was brought to a satisfying conclusion.
I regret having read this before the first two books in the series. While technically I believe this story was intended to stand alone, I have a feeling that a few of the things especially in Kyle’s history that I felt weren’t explained well were covered in those stories.
I was given a copy of this book for free. I was not required to give a favorable review nor was any money received for this review. All comments and opinions are my own.
This is a book that will appeal to those that love the Amish genre as well as those who just love a GREAT read!! The theme throughout is one that touched me deeply, a lifelong journey of forgiveness, both of self and others, as well as the power of love and faith. Both main characters, Kyle and Leah struggle to accomplish what God has instructed, but find it a difficult task indeed. It is so easy to say that one can forget the past however NOT easy to actually accomplish it! Rachel describes her characters in such a detailed realistic way that one quickly becomes engrossed in their lives. Their problems and challenges become those of the reader!! These two young people are true to life- they are not perfect! They have flaws as all of us do! Their path to a happy life is rocky at times and it seems as if they can never truly find happiness. I know that feeling, all too well!
The plot moves steadily with just enough twists and turns to keep the reader engrossed from beginning to end of the book. Thank goodness this story flows so well and is an easy read, as the reader will certainly have difficulty putting the book down before finishing it. I know that I did!
Rachel is to be commended on her accurate description of the Amish lifestyle. She has certainly done her research well! Her ability to portray the Amish lifestyle in such a believable way makes her novels rich in facts and details.
A five star book!! Don't miss it!! This book was received from the author and Celebrate Lit. I was not required to write a positive review. The thoughts and opinions expressed are honest and my own.
