A nice set of bite size interviews from philosophers speaking about their subjects, sometimes annoying, sometimes bewildering, but mostly interesting and thought provoking. A nice sized book divided into six sections: Joy and Pain; Morality; Mind, Self and Imagination; Free Will, Responsibility and Punishment; Politics and Metaphysics, Meaning and Reason. Great for giving the brain cells a workout without overtaxing them.
If you do not want to study the history of philosophy and in reality you just want a brief overview on what some of the most in vogue philosophers (mainly American) on some of the big issues past and present have to say, this is the book for you; but if you are not such a beginner, read other book.
THANKS TO NETGALLEY AND OXFORD UNIVERSITY PRESS FOR THE PREVIEW!
This was a very fun and interesting books. I did not read Philosophy Bites but this one was very entertaining. There are short "conversations" with leading philosophers on some very timely and important issues of modern life. It's good that someone thinks so deeply about these items -- I should probably do more reading.
Being a novice and not having a clue about philosophy which is why I chose to read this book and I found it most educational, its about having the ability to see conceptual structures using imagination and exploring different topics looking at it from a different point of view.
great snippets of philosophical discussions with modern day philosophers (who knew there were so many!). many of the discussions and thoughts shared were relevant to modern-day issues, while some were simply food for thought.
I wanted to see what philosophers do today and this book gave me exactly what I wanted. Some of the interviews annoyed me, some made me think, some made me laugh. I added a few books to my "to read" list when I found some really interesting ideas and philosophers. Overall, it is a pleasure to read and an overall smartly composed book. I will probably buy one more from this series a few years later.
