Fan-favorite Fruits Basket is back with more Sohma-filled adventures! Except this time, it's set in the same world, years later. Find out more in this new volume!
School's no longer an endless pit of anxiety and solitary lunches for Sawa thanks to the Sohmas. She's joined the student council and made new friends who don't abandon her no matter how painfully awkward or useless she is. They don't even get angry when she screws up or starts blabbering gibberish! Though social interactions are still daunting, people don't seem to be as scary anymore--at least, until another Sohma appears?!
Natsuki Takaya (高屋 奈月 Takaya Natsuki, real name Naka Hatake) is the penname of a Japanese manga artist best-known for creating the series Fruits Basket. She was born on July 7, 1973; (Tanabata). Takaya is left-handed and once revealed that she wanted to be a mangaka since first grade, when her sister started drawing.
She was born in Shizuoka, Japan, but was raised in Tokyo, where she made her debut in 1992. She enjoys video games such as the Final Fantasy series or Sakura Wars, or working on her different manga series, such as Fruits Basket, which is the second best-selling shōjo manga ever in Japan, and the top selling shōjo manga in North America. Fruits Basket has also been adapted into a twenty-six-episode anime series.
In 2001, Takaya received a Kodansha Manga Award for shōjo manga for Fruits Basket.
According to Takaya (in a sidebar of a Fruits Basket manga volume), she enjoys drawing girls (girly ones) more than she does boys. Takaya also enjoys electronics and music, but dislikes talking about herself. Also revealed in a sidebar of Fruits Basket, Takaya broke her drawing arm (left) after Fruits Basket volume six was published. She had to go into surgery, and as a result, had put Fruits Basket on a brief hiatus. Takaya made a full recovery, but complains that her handwriting had gotten uglier, due to the surgery. During her hospital stay, she gained an interest in baseball.
Some amendments to my Vol 1 review - the kid who is weak and we see at the end of the volume is Shiki, Akito & Shigure's son (a first year middle school student). Will wonders never cease.
Hanajima meanwhile appears to have a son as well, Ryo, who is a third year in middle school (but not a Sohma...so then did she not end up with Kazuma?).
Momiji and an unknown woman had a daughter, Mii, who's so darling. Momo is Momiji's assistant and quite close with Mii.
Ayame had two kids - a son Chizuru and a daughter Hibiki (who is a spitting image of her mother but practically Ayame in personality).
Hiro is mentioned, though little is said and Kisa not at all. I still think that Kinu is Hatori's kid (either Uotani & Kagure's kid or Hatori's), I..haven't seen anything about Ritsu.
Meanwhile the story itself is better paced and explained - I understand Mitoma better and she plays off Shiki well. And while it's hard not to compare every one against their parents I felt somewhat chastised by Chizuru who apparently is compared against his father (positively and negatively) fairly often. Yes yes I'll try to see them as individuals.
The ending bonus is a scene from Mutsuki's childhood where he's recounting his fav memory of home with his parents and how he learned about the Zodiac Curse from Yuki. In a scene that's far more emotional when you remember what Yuki's life was like as a kid, it gave some good insight into Mutsuki as well as how hard the Sohma Generation we all read about with Tohru are trying to not repeat those mistakes.
It’s giving carbon copy of the original and I wasn’t a fan. Still similar to the first volume where a lot of characters being there all at once. I need something new? We get more backstory for the main girl but she isn’t as likeable as Tohru. More scared and nervous and anxious. Whereas Tohru was welcoming and loving etc. I wouldn’t be comparing it to the original because nothing can compare, but it’s clear that this was intended to be very similar to it. I was going to give this two stars but I LOVED the bonus chapter. Seeing yuki as a dad >>> I needed that. That saved this volume.
This one was definitely a lot easier to follow than the first volume. It slows down the barrage of new Sohma introductions to give us more of a glimpse into our main character's life. I almost wish that would've happened in volume 1, because it explains SO much about her character and I feel bad for thinking she was annoying in vol 1 (or maybe that's the intent?) I do think it's interesting that Fruits Basket: Another is almost a reverse Furuba - instead of a good-natured outsider coming to the Sohma family to help them deal with their trauma, we have the Sohma family going to a traumatized outsider.
Honestly this whole series is very strange for me. It's riding entirely on nostalgia and fanservice and yet is really cagey with fanservice of the adult characters. It's very hard to follow at times and (particularly in the first volume) it seems like most of the plot is driven by "look who had offspring!!" But that being said, I do really enjoy seeing the next generation. It makes the ending of Fruits Basket feel even more satisfying knowing that our favorite characters were not only able to be happy with themselves, but have also effectively ended the cycle of abuse and trauma within one generation. There's a particularly touching scene of Yuki/Machi's son recounting when he learned about the curse. The whole way he reacted to it shows you how much warmth exists in their household and how Yuki and Machi were able to give their son a loving, supportive environment. It made me tear up not gonna lie.
I'm not sure when/if we'll be seeing the third volume in English since it's been on hiatus for a while in Japanese. I do selfishly hope for one more so we can see some of the original characters again (I NEED TO SEE TOHRU AND KYO).
I still have the same feelings like I did in the first volume. We don't really know anything about Sawa except her mom likes to leave her alone at home and is verbally abusive. It's hard to feel any way about her because she's such a forgettable character.
Also, I'm still waiting on that glossary of all the Soma kids..
THERE ARE TOO MANY SOHMAS, I DON'T KNOW WHO IS WHO.
I'm sad about this, but ... I'm just too confused to be getting into it. I did really like getting a bit more on the relationship between Sawa and her mum but I am so lost with everything else.
The second volume does a better job of providing background/context regarding Sawa’s relationship with her mother. Subsequently the reader is better able to understand why Sawa is so emotionally damaged and insecure. I’m glad there was *some* character growth. We also meet the rest of the Sohma children in this volume.
I’m mainly reading the sequel series because I’m feeling nostalgic and because I’m curious about the offspring of the characters from the original series.
I ended up loving this book so much. I loved seeing the world from the OG series. I felt so many emotions while reading this volume. I will definitely be finishing up this series and hopefully soon.
The "bonus" manga at the end was better than the entire first and second volume of this mini series. I wanted to see the old characters again (not their mini-me versions). There's basically no storyline at all. I'm so bored!
Fruits Basket Another Vol. 2 was an enjoyable follow-up to the first volume as we see Sawa and the Sohmas prepare for summer vacation.
Sawa Mitoma no longer spends her days alone thanks to the Sohmas. Between the student council and her new friends, Sawa has much to look forward to. And with summer break coming up, the Sohmas offer Sawa the chance to join them at their vacation cottage.
Fruits Basket is my all-time favorite manga series so I was excited about the prospect of a sequel series and after enjoying the first volume, I was looking forward to picking this one up. This volume introduced a few more Sohmas who are the children of the original characters. Momiji's daughter Mii in particular was completely adorable and she reminded me so much of Momiji. We also got to meet Hanajima's son which was fun and now I wonder about Uotani and if she has any kids we'll meet. We also got to meet Ayame's two children which was great. Hajime's character continues to be my favorite of the new generation of Sohmas, he's such a perfect blend of his parents.
In the first volume I had quite a few problems with Sawa's character which thankfully weren't as prevalent in this volume. She's still an anxious mess but she's somewhat better at accepting compliments and the fact the Sohmas want to be friends with her. We also get a bit more of her backstory and we see how her mother is verbally abusive. This did make it more understandable about why she acts the way she does and I liked that she opened up to her new friends about what was going on and that they helped her realize it's not her fault that her mother acts the way she does.
Overall Fruits Basket Another Vol. 2 was better than the first volume and I'm looking forward to continuing with the series soon.
In this volume we get to delve more into our main character's personal life as well as some of the Sohmas (shout out to the Yuki cameo - I was so excited!) We also get to meet Shiki! I'm still trying to figure out if there is going to be a romance or not in this! I'm also trying to figure out if there is an "easter egg" as to why the Sohma's are so enraptured in Sawa!
*Reread 1/15/20* That bonus short story didn't have to go as hard as it did. I'm crying so hard for Yuki and everyone and the happiness they all deserve.
The romance is still weird. He's a first year in middle school and she's a first year in high school... So I guess we'll see what they do with that in the next volume.
*Original Review 1/12/19* I really hope this series gets continued eventually. I'm a little more invested. I wish they would show more of the parents, but I like their kids and I like that they don't have the exact same personalities as their parents. They're all a little different and I liked that. Um, I think there's a romance being introduced between the MC and Akito's kid, which I'm not down for because of the age difference. But other than that I think I'm really enjoying this series and I hope she decides to continue it.
Still not sure what purpose this new series serves, except to dish up a tepid retread of a brilliant story. Is it a money grab by the publisher? The story is so unfocused, the characters are introduced in such a rapid and jumbled fashion I have a hard time figuring out who is who. Even guessing which kid is the offspring of the original Sohnas hasn’t proved much of a challenge.
honestly, i would rate these higher if it solely focused on the kids, i think
mitoma is a fine mc and i really like her story arc of realizing true friends will accept her and coming to terms with how her mom abuses her, but overall there's not much holding the plot together
this volume was better than the first as you meet chizuru, i like that unlike all the other sohma kids he is not a near carbon copy of the parents personalities blended together. i wish that was true for more of them
the little bonus scenes at the end, when the kids are told of the curse, are so much more engaging to me than what's actually occurring. i sort of wish these were focused on the kids growing up and their relationships with their parents rather than mitoma meeting them
mitoma's character arc and the arc of the sohma kids with their family are two separate stories i want to read, but not mixed together

This rating is 100% pure nostalgia and I might bump it up to five stars and stop pretending I'm not reading these volumes as one long bonus epilogue to one of my favourite mangas of all time.
First I have to find the original manga in my boxes (everything I own is still in moving boxes and I'm kinda depressed about the whole thing) and just hunker down with chocolate on a weekend and read all 23 volumes in one epic single-person readathon.
J’ai préféré ce tome au premier, même si finalement il ne se passe pas grand chose. Je me mêle un peu les pinceaux concernant les personnages et leurs noms, j’ai eu du mal à comprendre qui était le père de Mina… 😅🐰
This is definitely an improvement on the last volume, which I actually had to read through twice to try to grasp onto everything going on and get a sense of where the actual story was. Volume 2 gives a useful look into Sawa's family and her distant/emotionally abusive mother. It's a funny kind of irony to have a character seeking out the SOHMA family for functional family units. It's very clear that the generation we were introduced to in the original series is desperate not to repeat the sins of their parents...seriously, just about all of them were horrible, abusive parents. Hajime even makes an explicit reference to Kyo's biological father, who is apparently still alive, and says that he hates him and considers Shishou is his true grandfather (fuck yeah he is!). This divide is clearest in this volume's epilogue of sorts, which shows young Mutsuki with his parents, Yuki and Machi, making footprints in the snow (oh, my heart!), and Mutsuki making papa-Yuki weep when he tells him how happy their family makes him. I REALLY wish we didn't just see the original characters veiled in shadows...honestly, I care a lot more about their lives and growth than the more hijinks-y story of their kids.
There are a few more Sohma introductions in this volume, and it looks like Volume 3 will have everyone up at the family cottage for vacation. And given that the vacation volumes of the original series are where things really started to turn in the story, I'm hoping for some dramatics. I do wish this series had more explicit romance like its predecessor did, but the characters here feel a bit more young and immature than their counterparts.
I think I had the most fun piecing together the family tree and references to the original series, which I've outlined to the best of my abilities under the spoiler tag below:
There wasn’t a lot going on until later in the book. Now I’m starting to connect with the characters, and not just because of nostalgia over who their parents are.
Volume Review: 4/5 I read this over a month ago so don't remember my feelings that much, but I enjoyed it over all. I think I need to do a FB reread so I remember all of those characters, before diving into all these new characters. The artwork is nice. I like her newer and softer style. I think there's one more volume so can't wait for that!
