"Admiral Jacky Fisher was an outstanding and administrator responsible for wide ranging reforms which transformed the navy of the Victorian Age into a military machine capable of maintaining Britain's naval superiority in the First World War." This quote is from an assessment of the 12 greatest sailors in Britain's history. The author believes it to be a fitting epitaph, and I agree.
The man was a tireless powerhouse for the navy, working with speed and efficiency to modernize the navy against her potential enemies, whether it be France, Russia or Germany. Moving up the ranks, he made enemies who eventually helped to force him out as First Sea Lord, but he returned early during WWI, only to leave once again due to Gallipoli.
This is an interesting book about a dynamo of a man. He could be diplomatic, but mostly he was a "My way or get out of the way" individual. Britain and the Royal Navy were fortunate to have him at such in their history.
