A team of inexperienced Army snipers is sent on a five-day mission into the communist-controlled Michelin rubber plantation with vague orders to intercept a high-priority target. Nash Jaramillo and recently promoted Trey Jefferson are the snipers, along with two volunteer spotters. They are joined by a fifth member of the team, a former Viet Cong who defected, and his background makes the rest of the team uneasy. This hastily assembled squad must search out the enemy in the endless rows of rubber trees, knowing they have no backup. Their first contact with the enemy reveals a valuable and dangerous secret, one that transforms them from the hunters to the hunted. Now they must face deadly encounters with both the enemy and with supposed friends, all in the diminishing hope of making it to their rendezvous with the mechanized infantry platoon that can save them. The non-stop action and excitement will keep you captivated all the way to the surprise ending.
I thoroughly enjoyed reading David Allin's "Snipe Hunt". It gets off to a slow start but once the enemy is seen the action never ceases. Two snipers, two spotters, and a Chu Hoi (a questionable character who soon proves himself trustworthy and valuable) depart on a five-day mission within the Michelin Rubber Plantation in III Corps. Having patrolled the plantation myself with the Wolfhounds of the 25th Division, I found all references true and memorable.
The team's mission is vague, but when they discover a secret cache and take it for themselves, they find themselves hunted by both the NVA and the ARVN (supposed allies of the South Vietnamese Army). Without communications Radio is destroyed during a firefight) or support, and a severely wounded team member, they find themselves in a game of cat and mouse while attempting to reach friendly lines.
Although fiction, the premise is feasible and the writing style of the author makes it easy to read. Great job Mr. Allin! I've read a couple of his other books on the Vietnam War and will follow up on the others. Keep them coming!
I spent a year in Viet man mostly in a line haul unit (convoys) after transferring from an infantry unit and found much of the story to be accurate. However, while I was there I don't recall seeing half tracks
Vehicles as often as it seemed in the story. It was an enjoyable story, but it bought bad memories for me.
I enjoyed this book just for the excitement of the run through the Michelin plantation. It helps if you are a combat veteran as it makes the book an easier read. Thoroughly enjoyable.
I HAD to laugh when I read the part about when they listened to the radio and the song Ticket for an Airplane came over the radio. That song will forever take me back to Vietnam in July 67 during operation Essex
A good story line with believable characters. The tactics are credible and the weapons and basic area spot on except tree alignment. This story wasn't written by a rookie of FNG.
I was there and the book described the country well.
The author described the military, the soldier's, and the war as it was and how things happened between different country's fighting the war. Shut happens.
Throughly enjoyed this book! I really enjoyed the descriptions of the characters and the environments. Would highly recommend this book to anyone with a fascination with the Vietnam era.
When I went into the rubber from Dao Tang the Wolfhounds were fired on immediately. I was hiding behind a rubber tree when a jet fired its battling gun to our front and leaves filtered down. That was in the fall of 1968. Another good read.
I was in Vietnam at a lot of the surroundings are exactly as they were. Rubber trees where the VC head for you had to take a 50 just to hit them. Very go od book well written.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book and highly recommend it. The author's skill in developing recurring characters across multiple novels adds depth and continuity to the storytelling, making the reading experience particularly engaging.
I read war books,,this was very well written the danger is breath.takeing. Makes a person really think what what they Would do if faced with the same thing
I enjoyed the story and found that it was a story of the things that happen that one never hears about because it is not how things are supposed to happen.
Excellent story line. The author keeps all his stories within a tight time frame. Character development superb. Keep the realistic stories of the Nam coming!
I admit, this book is not my type usually, but I was up all night reading this one not wanting to wait till the next day to see what happens. 5 soldiers in the middle of nowhere with one being a chu Hoi, I was impressed by how the author portrayed the relationship of the 4 soldiers who had never met along with a former VC they didn't know if they could trust, and how combat brought them together as anyone who's been in combat knows can only happen in the line of fire. Add a $2 million stash and it turned into a greed contest between the NVA who wanted the money back, the ARVN Army who wanted it for themselves, and our Army just trying to rescue the team in the middle. Wow! Great story!
