The Second Time Around
Though born into wealth and privilege, Jordan Thorndike can’t keep pretending. This is the 3rd book I’ve read about a spoiled brat trying to get by on a ranch and falling in love with a cowboy. And it seems I can’t get enough of this particular trope. While not as good as Someone Worth Saving or Edge of Forever, it was still a great book! There was one thing that really bothered me though and that was that There were some extenuating circumstances that led up to that, but it still bugged me.
Jordan’s parents didn’t take his coming out very well. His father basically told him he would pretend it didn’t happen and Jordan could just go on with law school and date women. Well, Jordan didn’t want to live a lie anymore, so he packs a bag and get into his car.
Now homeless, jobless and apparently penniless, Jordan has no idea what to do and where to go. He suddenly remembers the ranch he spent several summers of his childhood on. The rescue ranch his mother donates a lot of money to. They have to take him on as a volunteer, right?
When Jordan arrives at the range, he is determined to charm the pants off of everybody so he can stay and help out for room and board. Luckily Phyllis recognizes him and is glad to have him help.
The ranch hand Russ is not so happy though. He treats Jordan like the spoiled brat Russ thinks he is. And yes, Jordan maybe spoiled and used to be rich, but he also works hard and is great with the animals. Now all he needs to do is make Russ see that…
I loved Jordan. He tried so hard to do everything right, and I was a bit angry with Russ for not seeing that. But of course I loved that Jordan just had to prove him wrong.
I also really liked that these guys had a good open talk after they got together about what they expected from each other. That was refreshing. Perhaps a bit soon, but still, I liked it.
There was one thing that I really didn’t like, and that was that Russ suddenly started doubting Jordan when I don’t think it added much to the story, just a bit of drama while there was enough other stuff going on to keep things interesting.
But besides that this was a nice story with some hurt/comfort and a rich kid finding his way in the world. We also had rescue animals and a biting ostrich. Together this made for quite an enjoyable book.

Jordan Thorndike was born with a silver spoon in his mouth, but that doesn't mean his life has been an effortless or happy one. Jordan is burdened with his father's expectations that he become a lawyer, although Jordan is just going through the motions. After coming out to his parents, he is left with a fancy car and little money of his own. In desperation, Jordan returns to the Second Time Around Rescue Ranch, where he and his mother spent several summers as volunteers, and where he especially feels a kinship to the horses the ranch rescues and rehabs.
I liked the plot as Jordan attempts to figure out his next step, and finds that helping the rescue animals helps himself as well. The mission of the rescue ranch and how they work with the community and sponsors held my interest and I liked the secondary characters involved with the ranch, especially the ranch's director Phyllis.
What didn't work for me as well was the relationship between Russ and Jordan. Jordan is a people-pleaser and he desperately tries to keep a smile on his face despite the heartache inside. The only tools he'd ever been given by his family were "Supress. Lock it away. Be proud. Be strong. Don't let the world see you hurt..." And no matter what he does he just can't win with ranch hand Russ. Russ believes Jordan to be a self-centered rich kid and nothing is going to change his mind. Russ' disdain is abundantly apparent, and then in the space of a few pages (around 45% through the book), Russ goes from an angry tirade to kissing Jordan, telling him "Baby, I've wanted you since the second you stepped out of that shiny red sports car of yours. I just didn't want to admit it." Wait, what?
Personally, I found it hard to become invested in their relationship because Russ is such a colossal a$$. And once Russ has moved on, he automatically expects Jordan to forgive him. As Jordan says
Jordan, sweetie, you deserve better. 3 stars.

"You weren't exactly impressed with me from day one," he pointed out.Now, I realize other readers may not have such a strong dislike of Russ, but this dislike colored my perception of the story. In the last pages of the book, Jordan says: "Russ, you know I'm still a mess, right? I mean, I'm working on it. I'm happy .... ecstatic really, that you and Phyl want me as part of your family, but I"m still kind of a mess." To which Russ tells him ".... I told you I'd be the happiest man in Texas to call you my mess." Not quite sure whether he liked that, Jordan stood frozen at the stove until Russ threw him another grin and said "Come on, slowpoke. We got work to do."
Russ grimaced. "I though we'd been over that and put it to bed already. I said I was sorry for prejudging. I told you I wanted you the whole time. What more do you need me to say?"
Jordan, sweetie, you deserve better. 3 stars.

Jordan Thorndike of the Virginia Thorndikes arrives at B STAR (Better the Second Time Around Rescue) after his coming out to his parents didn’t end happily. Jordan has good memories in the farm and he thinks it will help him this time as well. Russ Niles, foreman and right-hand man of B STAR owner, isn’t exactly impressed with the idea of (what he thinks as) spoiled rich brat to come slumming at the farm.
This is the second book that I read in the span of several days that deals with a character coming to an animal-rescue ranch (the first one was Whisper by Garrett Leigh). I enjoyed it as well, although I did get frustrated with one of the characters near the end.
I really liked the way that Jordan was determined to wear Russ down. Russ has his own judgment towards rich boys like Jordan, so Jordan wants to prove him wrong. It always amuses me when the younger man able to do that during the ‘courtship’.
One thing I also liked about Jordan – there’s almost two-decade age-gap between him and Russ, and I liked that Jordan kind of stayed true to his age. I mean, more often in romance with age gap, the younger one will have ‘old soul’. Not so much here, though. Jordan admits that ‘adulting’ is hard, and he might not have much to offer in this relationship, but he wants to ‘get’ there despite his mess. I liked that spirit.
Now Russ … well, he’s the one that frustrated me at times. He’s being prejudiced against Jordan. And near the end, Russ also acting a bit wishy-washy when his ex comes back to town. I wasn’t happy with Russ at that point *pout*.
In overall, I personally think that this is another good read from McAllister.

A sweet uncomplicated read.
I admit I missed that we got no closure with Jordans parents, and the ending was very abrupt. I had to go back and check I wasn't missing a page or two.
But overall a good read if you are in the mood for no drama or angst just a sweet slow getting together.

Sopprimilo. Nascondilo. Sii orgoglioso. Sii forte. Non lasciare che il mondo ti veda soffrire, erano quelle le uniche cose che gli aveva insegnato la famiglia, tanto che non era mai stato onesto con nessuno, nemmeno con la psicologa. Ora desiderò esserlo stato, perché quel metodo non funzionava. Le pareti della sua mente si stavano sgretolando, una crepa alla volta.
In questo periodo avevo davvero bisogno di una lettura-comfort, ovvero di un libro coccolo come questo.
In realtà le premesse non lo sono per niente: Jordan passa nel giro di poche ore da un'esistenza dorata (anche se di facciata e mantenuta con fatica) alla caduta più dolorosa, senza affetti e senza soldi. Ma non spaventatevi.
Il suo paracadute è rappresentato dal Ranch delle Seconde Occasioni, dove tutti - animali maltrattati e umani feriti nel cuore - possono provare a ricominciare.
La risalita di Jordan è molto bella, soprattutto perchè sia lui che Russ, il cowboy rude e intransigente (in realtà un romanticone) con cui si pone subito in rapporto di amore/odio sono due personaggi ben riusciti e davvero amabili.
In buona sostanza, potrebbe capitarvi di leggere la loro storia col sorriso ebete, in attesa che uno dei due abbandoni i battibecchi e si decida a capitolare.
Libro ben scritto, che si legge in un soffio e che ti lascia piena di emozioni "buone".
Mi hanno invece lasciata un po' perplessa gli ultimi capitoli, perchè non mi è parso un vero finale: varie cose sono rimaste in sospeso e non ho capito se questo è il primo libro di una serie che deve trovare un ulteriore sviluppo. In tal caso LO SPERO proprio :))))
Quindi mi fermo a 4 stelline.

Faded into the background on the bottom is a cowboy on horseback, barely noticeable. Author name is legible and well placed but the title font could have stood out a little more.
The synopsis was interesting and pulled me in.

Jordan’s coming out did not go anywhere near as bad as he thought it would, it went worse. Much worse.
Homeless, jobless, and clueless as to what to do next, he finds himself at the one place he loved as a child: an animal rescue catering mostly to horses but also some odds and ends, too.
Russ was the rescue’s foreman and he did not have time for some rich kid’s whims but the boss lady says let the boy stay and put him to work so that’s what he does. Soon, he sees that there may be more than what meets the eye.
Together they work the rescue and grow closer together but the past does not stay in the past and all too soon, the men are facing some unsettling truths while trying to navigate a fresh and fragile relationship. Some of the conversations were repetitive, admittedly by even the characters but the interaction felt real, raw, emotional.
A smattering of secondary characters add support to the story, most are likable, others are not. The plot flowed smoothly and the writing style was wonderful. Predictability was low. The conclusion, I felt, could have been a little stronger, more… conclusive. I’d liked to have seen how Phyl recovered and what became of Marina, not to mention a solid HEA for the guys.
Overall, it was an enjoyable story that I’d likely recommend to others.

Jordan è il secondogenito di una famiglia facoltosa e ha sempre “subito” il fatto di non essere considerato come il primogenito o coccolato come l'ultima arrivata. Il primogenito è perfetto e ha seguito le orme paterne, una gioia per la famiglia; la piccola di casa è piccola, può permettersi di fare ciò che vuole, mentre lui? Beh, lui deve diventare avvocato e sposare una brava ragazza di pari ceto sociale (possibilmente la figlia di qualche amico di famiglia): peccato che Jordan non voglia diventare avvocato, ma soprattutto non voglia sposare la figliA di nessuno, così affronta i suoi genitori... e vi lascio immaginare la scena: madre in lacrime e padre furibondo, così arrabbiato che lo caccia di casa fino a quando non rinsavirà.
Jordan sale in macchina e guida senza una meta precisa, deluso e ferito, non sa cosa vuole fare del suo futuro; ma per la prima volta può decidere da solo. Mentre guida si ricorda del periodo felice trascorso in un ranch che la madre sovvenziona, il Ranch delle Seconde Occasioni e, dato che lui ha bisogno di una seconda occasione, si dirige lì.
Arrivato a destinazione ritrova Phyllis, la proprietaria, e Russ il suo braccio destro (anche sinistro volendo, con tanto di torace e gambe... ehm ok torno seria) ma il primo incontro fra i due uomini non è proprio amichevole al 100%.
Jordan ritrova sensazioni passate di quando era piccolo e i “suoi” adorati cavalli, perché il ranch acquista cavalli maltrattati, li aiuta a guarire e poi li rivende per avere una seconda occasione di essere felici.
Russ non sopporta i figli di papà a causa di un rapporto passato finito male quindi all'inizio prende Jordan un po' di punta. Lentamente però capisce (anche grazie a Phyllis) che non è un ragazzino ricco e sfaccendato, ma che ha i suoi demoni come tutti, e pian piano dall'amicizia...
L'autore riesce a far capire il disagio di Jordan come figlio mezzano, il suo non sapere cosa fare della sua vita, la sua confusione, la paura di deludere i genitori.
Essere genitori non è facile, ma i figli devono essere felici per loro stessi, non sono una nostra estensione.
Russ invece è solo reticente a causa di esperienze passate non positive, anche perché è la classica persona che dà tutto se stesso in una relazione.
Due protagonisti ben caratterizzati, uno stile scorrevole, un romanzo che ha saputo emozionarmi e...
ma il finale? Rowan McAllister, scrivi il sequel!

August 23, 2025Un jeune homme issu d'un milieu plus qu'aisé se fait mettre dehors et retirer tous ses privilèges (comptes bancaires...) par ses parents parce qu'il fait son coming-out. Jeté sur les routes (au volant de sa décapotable rouge quand même), il va par le hasard de la route finir là où il avait passé quelques moments sympas dans son enfance : un ranch qui tient lieu de refuge pour animaux en détresse.
Là, il va se plonger dans le travail, se faire adopter par tous le monde, révéler un don inné avec les animaux (il sait murmurer à l'oreille des chevaux) et avec les gens (il sait murmurer à l'oreille des gens friqués), chercher un sens à sa vie, baver devant le cowboy local, chercher un sens à sa vie.
Quant au cowboy local en question, après avoir traité le petit bourge comme de la crotte (quasiment littéralement, puisqu'il lui fait faire le fumier), durant les premiers chapitres, il va changer radicalement d'attitude et de comportement avec lui quand il apprend qu'il s'est fait virer et c'est parti pour des galipettes dans toutes les pièces et des mon chéri en cascade.
Rajoutez à ça un drame avec une pauvre jument (qui n'avait rien demandé), le retour de l'ex du cowboy local (qui vient récupérer son jules après être allé crapahuter deux ans avec médecins du monde), la visite de la sœur du jeune perdu (qui ne fait pas vraiment avancer la cause), une propriétaire de ranch dans le rôle de la mama et voila.
Si j'ai (évidemment) bien aimé l'idée d'un ranch où les animaux sont sauvés et soignés, la romance entre Jordan et Russ ne m'a pas convaincue du tout, passant du mépris à la mièvrerie d'un coup (je me suis même demandé si je m'étais pas endormie sur des pages), pour finir après par le mélodrame du retour de l'ex qui sert pas à grand chose.
J'ai d'autant plus de regrets qu'il y avait matière à quelque chose d'intéressant, entre la famille de Jordan, sa relation avec son apparence et sa relation avec la nourriture, sa gestion de ce qu'il va faire de sa vie, mais tout est finalement zappé très vite, on comprend pas vraiment d'où sort la décision de Jordan à la fin (enfin si, de son pantalon).
Bref, une lecture vite lue et encore plus vite oubliée (à part Marina), dommage.

Il libro di cui vi parlo oggi è un piccolo tesoro che mi ha commossa e affascinata: Seconde occasioni. Si tratta di un romance MM ambientato in Texas in cui l’autrice riesce a dipingere una tela ricca di sfumature, alternando tinte più leggere e pennellate sfumate a episodi decisamente dai toni più caldi ma anche molto intensi, emotivamente parlando. La trama non è certo innovativa, però la capacità narrativa e lo stile descrittivo della McAllister fanno la differenza. Amo moltissimo le storie d’amore e apprezzo molto quelle che nascono in ambienti particolari, a contatto con la natura che sempre pare essere in grado di ristabilire gli equilibri dell’animo umano, anche il più ferito.
Questa storia, narrata in terza persona, racconta di seconde occasioni, di scelte di vita e dello strazio del cuore generato dall’ignoranza, dal perbenismo, dai finti moralismi e, non ultimo, dalle imposizioni grottesche e immote di una classe sociale particolarmente agiata che verte tutto su apparenza e sorrisi di circostanza.
La narrazione comincia dal baratro: Jordan è il secondogenito di una facoltosa famiglia milionaria della Virginia, da sempre il figlio inadeguato, incerto e ignorato della casa, ribelle per distinguersi, che dopo anni di silenzi e segreti, sceglie di ammettere la sua omosessualità e confidarsi in famiglia. Il risultato è un’apocalisse di proporzioni notevoli in quanto il giovane si trova, nel giro di poche ore, giudicato, vessato, scacciato di casa e diseredato seduta stante, causa la vergognosa ammissione di essere gay.
Un groviglio di panico prese ad agitarsi dentro di lui mentre davanti ai suoi occhi continuavano a passare persone che avevano un posto dove andare e cose da fare.
Oddio.
Forse aveva appena gettato via tutta la sua vita per niente. Si era presentato nell’ufficio di suo padre e aveva preteso di essere accettato per chi era quando neanche lui lo sapeva. Che diavolo gli era passato per la mente?
Primadonna.
Quel pensiero lo riscosse dall’attacco di panico che stava per travolgerlo in quel luogo pubblico, di fronte a tutti. Strinse i denti, alzò il mento e ricacciò giù il panico con una serie di respiri controllati.
Aveva fatto la scelta giusta. Magari la pianificazione e l’esecuzione non erano andati come aveva sperato, ma la decisione era giusta. Doveva crederci. Nella sua vecchia vita, con tutte quelle aspettative, si era sentito schiacciato. Non sarebbe riuscito a continuare in quel modo senza perdere il senno.
“Ma adesso che faccio?”
Pensate a Jordan, mettetevi al suo posto se potete.
Io mi sono commossa più volte durante questa lettura, soprattutto nei momenti in cui l’autrice lascia emergere tutte le incertezze e i timori di un giovane uomo, fragile, insicuro che, in apparenza, ha avuto tutto dalla vita ma che in sostanza è stato privato degli elementi essenziali per crescere e diventare un adulto consapevole: libertà di espressione, amore incondizionato, fiducia e stimolo da parte di genitori troppo impegnati a salvaguardare il buon nome della famiglia per occuparsi del figlio di mezzo, non perfetto e impeccabile come il primogenito e nemmeno amorevole-eterna bambina come la sorellina minore, Gemma, la piccola di casa.
Jordan è stravolto e chi non lo sarebbe? Manca totalmente di una solida struttura interiore che lo indirizzi, si sente perduto, ha sempre lottato per opporsi a ciò che sapeva di non voler essere ma, cullato dagli agi, non ha mai riflettuto sul pensiero opposto e cioè chi vorrebbe essere.
Eppure una via gli si presenta innanzi, il ranch B-Star in Taxas, il cui nome è un acronimo, che, tradotto letteralmente dall’inglese, significa: “la prossima volta andrà meglio”. Un luogo a lui molto caro sin dall’infanzia, che sua madre contribuisce a sostenere attraverso le sue azioni di beneficienza e che è più di una semplice fattoria: è un luogo in cui fermarsi e ripartire, riflettere e vivere la natura, è un luogo pieno d’amore, animali e brave persone che non chiedono nulla in cambio di un sorriso sincero e che lavorano sodo.
Questa oasi di pace era il sogno di una donna, Phyllis, Phyll per gli amici, uno dei personaggi più interessanti di cui io abbia letto recentemente, e di suo marito. Loro hanno creato dal nulla questo rifugio per animali abbandonati o feriti e i volontari che li accompagnano li hanno aiutati per anni a curarli e guarirli per poi cercare per loro una nuova famiglia adottiva, disponibile ad occuparsene con amore.
La stessa accoglienza calorosa viene rivolta alle persone; queste possono fermarsi e lavorare in cambio di vitto e alloggio, riprendere il filo della loro vita e quindi procedere, sempre sotto l’amorevole, ma autorevole, sguardo dell’anziana signora, oramai vedova, che rappresenta l’immagine di tutte le buone mamme e nonne del mondo. Un personaggio che emerge dal libro e che sarà impossibile non apprezzare.
È qui che Jordan si rifugia, offrendosi di lavorare come volontario e dove incontrerà Russ, un uomo adulto dal cuore tenero e le braccia d’acciaio con una lingua tagliente, come solo chi ha sofferto e sa che deve difendersi, può avere. Un personaggio dalle mille sfaccettature e molto sexy. Jordan ne rimane affascinato all’istante, ma Russ sembra intenzionato a dargli del filo da torcere.
Assistiamo a scontri verbali e non, ascoltiamo i loro pensieri ed è impossibile non percepire la grande fragilità di Jordan, convinto di non essere mai abbastanza, imprigionato in una routine di apparenze, alimentazione sofisticata, vittima della sua tendenza a voler apparire al meglio sia a causa di come è cresciuto che per le convenzioni a cui ha dovuto sottostare sino ad allora. Quanti cambiamenti dovranno compiersi in lui perché possa spiccare il volo? Quanto rimuginare e struggersi a causa di questo burbero cow boy che talvolta gli ricorda così tanto suo padre, nel giudicarlo prima di averlo conosciuto.
Anche noi lettori conosceremo Jordan gradualmente grazie alla penna di un’autrice che ha saputo tessere una trama delicata, una storia d’amore, di rinascita e scoperta in cui gli affetti sono il cardine. Scopriamo l’estensione della parola famiglia, che può non essere solo il nucleo che ha visto i nostri natali ma, molto più spesso, è quella che nel corso della vita si viene a formare in una fitta trama di legami, fiducia, amore e forse, soprattutto, nell’accettare l’altro per quello che è e amarlo a prescindere.
Russ mi è piaciuto molto per quasi tutto il libro, poi mi ha delusa per recuperare alla fine, lascio a voi scoprire come e perché; senza dubbio anche lui è una persona dai trascorsi difficili, dotata e speciale, che adesso è il braccio destro di Phyll e destinato a succederle, un giorno. Russ è parte del ranch ed esso è parte di lui. Con il suo cuore tenero e la corazza apparentemente infrangibile, sarà determinante per la crescita emotiva di Jordan perché in fondo nessuno è perduto, se trova qualcuno che crede in lui.
Jordan chiuse gli occhi e abbassò la testa. “No. Ora non posso proprio, Russ.”
Mettendogli una mano dietro la nuca, Russ lo attirò a sé fino a posare la fronte sulla sua. “Sei più teso di una corda di violino,” mormorò contro il suo viso. “Se non ti liberi di questa tensione, ti spezzerai. Preferisci che accada qui con me o di fronte a tua sorella e a tutti gli altri?”
Jordan serrò la mascella e sbuffò dalle narici. “Non voglio farlo da nessuna parte,” sibilò.
“Non è un’opzione,” sussurrò Russ, con tristezza.
Jordan sbuffò e cercò di liberarsi, ma lui non lo lasciò andare. “Non voglio che accada di fronte a te.”
“Perché?”
“Non voglio che pensi che sono debole.”
“Non succederà.”
Stavolta Russ lasciò che il ragazzo si staccasse e che lo guardasse con aria scettica. “Non mi pare di aver fatto colpo la prima volta che ci siamo incontrati,” gli fece notare.
Russ fece una smorfia. “Pensavo che avessimo già chiarito quella questione. Mi sono scusato per i miei pregiudizi. Ti ho detto che ti ho sempre desiderato. Che altro vuoi che ti dica?”
Stringendosi con le braccia in modo protettivo, Jordan fece un altro passo indietro. “C’è una bella differenza tra volersi scopare qualcuno e ammirarlo.”
“Cercare di litigare con me non risolverà i tuoi problemi familiari, e lo sai,” ribatté Russ, avvicinandosi di un passo. “Te l’ho detto fin da subito che le parole non sono il mio forte, ma se vuoi che mi esprima chiaramente, anche se mi pareva di averti dimostrato con le mie azioni ciò che provo, lo farò.” Continuò ad avvicinarsi fino a imprigionare Jordan contro la parete, piazzando le mani ai lati del ragazzo. “Sei gentile. Sei intelligente. Sei altruista e sensibile. Sei bellissimo, e molto più forte di quanto credi. Nonostante tutto quello che stai passando, vedo che stai lottando con tutto te stesso. Ma nessuno può essere forte per tutto il tempo. Nessuno può farcela senza chiedere aiuto di tanto in tanto.”
“Neanche tu?” Le labbra di Jordan tremarono, e Russ sorrise.
“Soprattutto io. Uno di questi giorni vedrai quanto sono fragile e sarà tutto finito. Non mi guarderai più con gli stessi occhi. Perciò ora smettila di fare il cretino e parla con me.”
Ultimo aspetto che mi ha affascinata è la descrizione dei momenti che i due ragazzi vivono insieme ai cavalli di cui si occupano a conferma della tesi secondo la quale la vicinanza con un animale, la quotidianità e il prendersene cura, genera una relazione reciproca di cui beneficiano, infine, entrambi i soggetti coinvolti. In sostanza una lettura piacevole e, volendo, non eccessivamente impegnativa ma commovente, tenera e con momenti di passione intensa e dirompente non stucchevoli né esagerati che si inseriscono perfettamente nella trama.
Unico difetto: la conclusione, il libro finisce in una maniera netta che mi ha lasciata un po’ di amaro in bocca, forse semplicemente avrei voluto leggere di più, vedere come avrebbe potuto proseguire, assicurarmi sul benessere effettivo di tutti i personaggi, verificare che Isaiah smettesse di telefonare… beh, mica posso raccontarvi tutto. I was given a copy of this book to read and review for Wicked Reads.
This is such a difficult book for me to review. On one hand, I really liked the story about a rich kid re-starting his life on a ranch. On the other hand, I found the writing choppy and difficult to engage with.
My favourite part of this book was Jordan’s growth. At the start of the book, Jordan is broken and desperate. He craves approval and affection and doesn’t know what to do when his charm fails him. Working on the ranch forces Jordan to grow up, grow into himself and to start working towards the future he actually wants.
I didn’t get on terribly well with the romance in this book. I don’t think the romantic tension builds quite the way the author intended. Instead we lurch from Russ’ scathing, judgemental view of Jordan to instalove. I wasn’t entirely convinced by Russ’ irrational hatred of Jordan at the start of the book and I was completely surprised by his seemingly random change of heart at the midpoint. I really didn’t enjoy the relationship dramas later in the book. They don’t make sense for the characters and the ex-boyfriend jealousy/cheating stuff doesn’t make either Jordan or Russ look good. As a romance reader, it’s difficult to invest emotionally in such a fragile relationship.
I enjoyed Jordan’s story but the writing style annoyed me enough that I kept putting the book down. I love the idea of Russ - the strong silent cowboy - but his character isn’t consistent and I don’t feel like I ever knew him well enough to care about him.
This is such a difficult book for me to review. On one hand, I really liked the story about a rich kid re-starting his life on a ranch. On the other hand, I found the writing choppy and difficult to engage with.
My favourite part of this book was Jordan’s growth. At the start of the book, Jordan is broken and desperate. He craves approval and affection and doesn’t know what to do when his charm fails him. Working on the ranch forces Jordan to grow up, grow into himself and to start working towards the future he actually wants.
I didn’t get on terribly well with the romance in this book. I don’t think the romantic tension builds quite the way the author intended. Instead we lurch from Russ’ scathing, judgemental view of Jordan to instalove. I wasn’t entirely convinced by Russ’ irrational hatred of Jordan at the start of the book and I was completely surprised by his seemingly random change of heart at the midpoint. I really didn’t enjoy the relationship dramas later in the book. They don’t make sense for the characters and the ex-boyfriend jealousy/cheating stuff doesn’t make either Jordan or Russ look good. As a romance reader, it’s difficult to invest emotionally in such a fragile relationship.

I loved this book. Cowboys, hurt-comfort, renewal, and second chance at life all together . Jordan was a rich kid used to getting by on charm and good looks. Russ is a man who had to work for everything he had. When Jordan comes out to his family, his father disowns him removing all access to any of the money except for Jordan's own personal account. Not sure what to do, he head out to Texas to the B Star ranch, a rescue ranch. A charity that his mother loves and that Jordan had fond memories of. Russ is the manager as the owner is an over 70 woman who still is firmly in charge even is she can't do as much of the physical work as she used to. Jordan manages to charm everyone but Russ at first meeting. Past hurt from a spoiled rich lover clouds Russ' judgement. so you have someone learning to overcome his past hurt helping someone who hurts are fresh.

I've always been a fan of Rowan's writing style. This book was a cute May/December story with a slow build.
Only down side was the rushed ending, felt like it needed another chapter, more of a HFN than a HEA.

Jordan is completely lost when he comes to B STAR. He’s an emotional mess and only wants to forget his situation. He tries to avoid thinking of it by diving into work and seducing Russ. It works for one, but Russ is another subject, and the man always reminds Jordan how useless he can be. Until Jordan speak his mind and call Russ on his shit. That’s when things change for them. It was sweet and hot, like super-hot and I completely melted for them.
Russ is over 40 years-old, but the two are a very good match. Jordan is young, immature and a drama queen, but he’s also very smart and kind with a big heart. He tries to avoid thinking of his situation because he doesn’t really know how to deal with it, that’s when Russ came. With his care, gentleness, experience, and love, Russ helps Jordan to figure out what he really wants in his life. They were perfect for each other.
Rowan McAllister has a super good writing style that I like. The book and plot are captivating, and the feelings are very well written and developed without plot holes or inconsistency. That’s what I love here—the plot is simple—a young man trying to know what he wants in his life who meets an older man who knows what he wants in his life. But it was so well written with the feelings developed so well without being forced on us that you can only read the book and hold on it until the HEA.
I gladly recommend this book, It’s a good May-December book, with adorable MCs that you will love as much as I have.

✔ Letto! Siamo nel Texas e qui direttamente dalla Virginia arriva Jordan. Un povero ragazzo Rico, che è stato invitato dai suoi ricchi genitori a seguire le loro regole o andarsene. La strada lo porta al B STAR. Un posto in cui era già stato con i suoi genitori quando era piccolo. In cui era stato felice. Il ranch era un posto dove gli animali venivano curati nel fisico e nell'anima maltrattati. Ma non solo gli animali, Si prendevano cura anche degli umani spezzati come Jordan e ancora prima di lui, di Russ.
Russ è il sovrintendente del ranch. Ha amato tanto in passato, ed è stato lasciato altrettanto dagli uomini che volevano di più, che sognavano di più e lui non ne faceva parti di questi sogni o desideri. E così veniva sempre lasciato per qualcosa di meglio. Era ormai stufo marcio di persone ricche e snob come Jordan.
Jordan mi ha fatto molta tenerezza, un ragazzo molto insicuro di sé e quasi un po' immaturo, troppo prottetto, troppo alla ricerca di rassicurazioni. È un bellissimo uccelino fragile.😚 Devi ancora trovare la sua strada nel mondo e scoprire cosa fare del suo futuro senza la sua ricca bigotta famiglia.
Tra lui e Russ, sarà una bella lotta a cui Jordan dovrà dimostrare a Russ che è molto di più che un faccino bello e un conto in banca astronomico. E Russ dovrà dimostrare a Jordan che ormai il passato è quello che è, e che lo ha giudicato male. Tutti i due uomini sono alla ricerca delle seconde occasioni e pronti a prenderla in caso si presentasse.
Bello, con personaggi secondari molto carini. La famiglia di Jordan mi ha molto delusa, ho sperato che almeno la mamma lo avessi contattato, ma niente. Solo la sorella svampita...😶 Vivono in un mondo parallelo questi ricchi? 😬🤔

The Second Time Around is a standalone by Rowan McAllister. It is about a young man named Jordan who is disowned by his very rich and privileged family for being gay. He leaves poor, homeless and jobless. He escapes to a rescue farm his family to used to visit as a child. Russ is an older man who works at the ranch. He is the owner's right-hand man and the complete opposite of Jordan.
Jordan actually comes off as very down to earth, while he is very adamant he is not a spoiled brat, there are some instances where it does make you assume he is from a wealthy background but he changes pretty fast. He is a hard worker and is really good with the horses. He adapts to the whole broke lifestyle without a complaint. Russ is very hardened by his experiences. He assumes Jordan is nothing but a spoiled brat. He is proved wrong time and time again.
This was a nice read. The attitude changes Russ shows constantly were kind of hard to read. One second he liked Jordan, the next he was a spoiled brat again. They made an interesting couple. The biggest issue I had with the book was that despite Jordan being disowned and his father being a constant voice in his head, we do not see the father. We only see his little sister for less than a chapter. It left the story kind of unfinished in my mind. Not to mention the ending was so abrupt, I read at it twice to see if I had missed something.

Jordan expected his coming out to his parent to be bad but not being disowned. As long as he did as his father wanted, becoming a lawyer and marrying a woman they would let things slide, but Jordan decides not to hide any longer. With nowhere to go and is credit cards canceled he decides to go to the charity his mother supported an Animal rescue called the Second Time Around Ranch. B STAR for short.
Phyllis welcomes him with open arms and offers to let him stay for room and board since he is good with the animals, However, the foreman, Russ wants him gone ASAP. He doesn't have time to coddle spoiled little rich kids.
I liked all of the characters in the story. I even liked that at first Russ comes off as a major butthead, but is redeemed by the end of the story. I loved Jordan and how he was from money but had no problem working to prove his worth. I adored Phyllis. She is just wonderful and the glue that made the story stick.

Rinascita e speranza
Dopo aver confessato ai genitori la sua omosessualità ed essere stato rifiutato, Jordan parte con la sua BMW decapottabile senza una meta precisa. Il peso delle aspirazioni paterne lo stava schiacciando e anche se lui all'esterno mostra una maschera fatta di apparenza e perfezione, dentro ha emozioni e i desideri che non riesce a esprimere. Un messaggio e un ricordo lo porta al B Star, un ranch in cui anni prime aveva vissuto momenti felici con la sua famiglia.
Il B Star accoglie animali abbandonati e feriti, li rimette in sesto per trovargli una nuova casa. Russ è il sovrintendente e braccio destro della proprietaria, molto bravo con gli animali ma non molto a suo aggio con i ricconi che frequentano e finanziano il ranch. Il rapporto tra Russ e Jordan all'inizio è ostile e difficoltoso, poi grazie al comune amore per i cavali i due si avvicinano ma non mancheranno le difficoltà.
La storia tratta argomenti come abbandono e rifiuto, guarigione e rinascita e una seconda occasione non solo per gli animali che vi transitano.
Consigliato a chi ama cowboy affascinanti, ranch, persone di gran cuore e vari animali.

Comincia come uno scontro di personalità fra Jordan, un giovane che ha appena fatto coming out e per questo è stato cacciato di casa e abbandonato dalla famiglia di origine, e Russ, molto più grande di lui e reduce da legami sentimentali fallimentari. È una storia semplice, ma molto piacevole.

Jordan’s reality, once he uttered the words that, apparently, had far more power than he believed – “I’m gay and I don’t want to be a lawyer” – ceased to exist and he found himself with no family, no job, and no income. Volunteering at B STAR (Better the Second Time Around Rescue) in Texas, far away from his family in Virginia, seems like just what he needs. Working himself into the ground every day, too tired to move by bedtime, is just what Jordan needs to keep his brain from thinking too much. Russ, however, has little use for the trust-fund brat as he has seen his kind before and feels sure he knows the outcome of Jordan’s “volunteering”. Both men have a lot to learn, not just about each other, but about themselves as well.

La storia d’amore mi è piaciuta e mi sono sentita molto vicina a Jordan. Avrei dato anche 4 stelline ma gli ultimi capitoli sono un po’ troppo frettolosi e diverse cose sono rimaste in sospeso.
